Why It’s Time Black People Simply Disengage With White People In Discussing Race

Welcome to our community

I met dviss and I guarantee you, he doesn't hate white people. Folks need to stop projecting that. I admire his passion and we all get heated about shit from time to time. These conversations just don't happen for the majority of people. A little humor goes a long way when sensitive issues are discussed. Where's Homer?

Thanks @riverman I appreciate this.

I think you confuse "not caring" with "not believing I can effect change".

Or afraid? I'm sure there's a healthy fear of challenging the racists. Hell, I'm afraid too. I think ou have more power than you believe you do.

March with us.

I'd march and be active for anyone's rights.

I could see that too. There are racists of all stripes.

I think it's weird for me, because I grew up in a time where being black was cool. The late 90's was a time where hip hop was massively popular, and most of the kids at my school had baggie pants, and they wore things like Tommy Hilfiger and Helly Hanson, and the occasional FUBU.... which was hilarious. Michael Jordan was a god. Puff Daddy was a fashion icon. It was a mostly white school, but we had small group of black kids that were all popular. There weren't any unpopular black kids at my school. I never saw any racism. It was actually the opposite. So I guess it's hard for me to relate because black kids were widely accepted at my school. At the other end of the spectrum, my sister took dance at Jefferson. My mom would drive her over to Jeff every afternoon to do dance, and she experienced A LOT of racism towards her. One time she had kids throw rocks at her while she was waiting for my mom to pick her up.

So why would black kids be completely accepted in a mostly white school, but my sister would face blatant racism in a mostly black school? That's the part that doesn't make sense to me.

Black people can't be racist. Your sister must have just stunk! /kappa

They think, "It's not our problem because it doesn't exist near me." Sure, they might speak up if I saw something, but they never see anything, so they don't do anything.

This is a privilege. They don't have to care. Like I've said to you before how does racism truly effect your life? You have the ability to turn a blind eye and not care if you don't want to deal with how we're treated. You can claim cognitive dissonance. I can't.

What do you do to help? You could stand with us if you wanted. You could stop marginalizing BLM as some racist movement. Lots of white people are involved. Are they apologists or activists?

What I think you misinterpret is my disdain for racists as a disdain for white people in general. This is certainly not the case.

SlyPokerDog is such an asshole.

Do you disagree? Because I am pretty sure you've said this exact same thing. Black people can't be racist. Or if you didn't say it, you agreed with it, when another member posted on this forum about their professor and the class discussing this very same context. The gist was "people of power can only be racist".

That's because black culture has always been a trend. It's it "cool to be black" now?

As far as Jefferson, racism breeds itself. How could Israelis be so racist towards Palestinians after what they've been through? Germany learned for the most part. Those racist black people have PTSD.

It was a stupid, inaccurate post that made absolutely no sense and didn't bring the conversation forward.

And I've never said nor agreed with anything like that. What the fuck are you talking about?

I don't participate because I think there are bigger problems. Only 1,200 Americans were killed by police last year. That's including blacks, whites, etc. 1,200 people in a country of 319 million. That's just not a problem that deserves this much attention.

Focus on getting drugs legalized. That would take away a lot of the power that police have. That would get a lot of people out of jail. The war on drugs has created a lot of the issues that are troubling the black community.

Focus on getting people into office that aren't bought and paid for by big pharma and the banking industry. If we turn around our economy, people will be less likely to turn to crime because they won't be desperate.

Focus on improving our education system. Help get our kids into better jobs.

I just don't look at police brutality as being the root of the problem. We need to go above and beyond the police. Remove the politicians that are putting these cops in power. Change from the top down. Get out and vote. I see violent protests as a waste of time and energy. They only hurt your message.

Then it's being passed down, because they're kids. They're kids acting out towards white people. That's not PTSD. That's racism that's handed down from their parents.

I'll just let this comment stand on its own and kindly remove myself from the conversation.

When I was six racist white people pulled over their truck and dumped their ashtray out on me and told me that I was a nigger that was going to end up in prison. You don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

I. WAS. SIX. YEARS. OLD.

And my sister was 15.... does she now have a right to fear all black people? Does she get to have PTSD?

This is the reason for the OP and the entire thread.

I have disengaged.

Yup. I think our country has bigger problems than 1,200 people killed by police, and that's even assuming that they were all good people who were completely innocent.

There are 319 million people in this country. There are 1.1 million cops in this country. Not even a tenth of a percent of the police shot and killed someone last year.

Oh god, grow up. Your OP is about racism.... I'm talking specifically about police violence. Guess what, they kill white people too. But if you think police violence is more critical than the economy, than education, or healthcare or the war on drugs.... well... you have a very narrow point of view my friend. I'm glad you're not running the country.

There were never more than 200-300 lynchings in a year. Not a problem?

I don't know what he said of course, but you do mess up quite a few posts that way. You do know, what you infer is not always what others will infer or what someone attempted to imply.

I didn't have to infer anything, it was a personal insult. Just like the posts I edited of yours were.

Good god this is an asinine post.

1. I didn't say that Police shootings aren't a problem. It's ridiculous that you're making that assertion. I said that there are bigger problems in this country.

2. There are no legitimate lynchings.. they were all bad. Period. Whereas I'm sure at least a few of those shootings were necessary. Are police not entitled to defending themselves? Not at all?

Give me a break Denny....

Seriously, I can't get over how completely idiotic that post was.

There aren't bigger problems to black people.

For the same reason. The police killings are a lot like the lynchings of old. Right down to the police participating.

Really? The war on drugs isn't a bigger and more impactful problem for black people? Remind me, how many blacks are in prison right now because of drug charges?

The economy isn't a bigger problem..... nope.... that's not at all a problem. We didn't just go through a major recession.

Healthcare.... not a big problem that affects everyone.

Poverty..... not a big problem that affects everyone.

Nope, the biggest problem right now is 1,200 people, half of which were white, getting killed by the police. In some cases because of legitimate reasons. That's definitely the top priority right now in this country. I'm not saying it's not a problem, but he asked why I'm not out protesting with BLM and honestly it's because to me there are much more impactful issues.
