Simple. Republicans like fiscal responsibility when a Democrat is president and wants money for social services or science or schools. They ignore fiscal responsibility when a Republican is president and wants gigantic tax cuts for the rich.f

Ron DeSantis Signs $109.9 Billion Budget, Vetoes More Than $3 Billion

This week, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the state budget, vetoing more than $3 billion while putting in place $109.9 billion in state spending, both record-high amounts.

The budget DeSantis signed is $10 billion larger than the “Freedom First budget” he proposed in December. Last year, he signed off on a $101.5 billion budget. For the 2018-2019 fiscal year, during which DeSantis was elected, then Gov. Rick Scott signed an $88.7 billion budget into law.

DeSantis insisted the new budget “prioritizes the freedoms of Floridians to live, work, and have successful businesses in the state.”

“The budget totals $109.9 billion and includes a record $1.24 billion in tax relief for Floridians. Florida will have historic reserves at the end of Fiscal Year 2021-2022, totaling more than $20 billion, and reserves for Fiscal Year 2022-2023 are estimated to begin the year at more than $16 billion. Florida has record levels of reserves while continuing to make historic investments in education, infrastructure, and other programs. To maintain Florida’s sound fiscal standing in the face of negative economic headwinds due to ill-conceived federal policies, Governor DeSantis vetoed $3.1 billion in spending, setting a new state record by a wide margin,” the governor’s office insisted.

“Florida has preserved freedom and kept the economy open, which has enabled the state to outperform the nation in jobs, growth, and business formations,” said DeSantis after he signed the budget in the Villages on Thursday. “Our commitment to freedom has paid off. Our responsible fiscal policies have put the state in a strong position to make the record investments needed to support growth and opportunity in spite of the reckless fiscal and monetary policies of the Biden administration.”

The tax relief includes a “gas tax holiday that lowers the price of gas in Florida by 25.3 cents and will save Floridians $200 million and a sales tax holiday on diapers and baby clothes for one year, providing $120 million in tax relief.”

The budget also includes $400 million to expand broadband, including in rural communities, and $11.7 billion for the State Transportation Work Program. The new budget also spends $8,143 per student, a record high, and almost $580 million for workforce education. The budget also includes bonuses for first responders and bonuses to recruit law enforcement officers from out of state..........

~ Annual Quality Counts report grades Florida third in the nation for second year ~

Tallahassee, Fla., September 2, 2021 – Florida continues to shine with its national ranking as third in the nation for K-12 Achievement according to a new 2021 Quality Counts report by Education Week. This is the second year Florida has ranked third, which was a move up from fourth in 2019 and continues to be the highest ranking ever in K-12 Achievement for the Sunshine State.

“Florida continues to set the pace for the nation in education,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “We led the nation in re-opening our schools last year and our entire education community stepped up to make sure that every student received a quality education. In Florida, we will continue to make sure that every child has the opportunity to learn in school and get a great education.”

“Today’s announcement is a clear measure of the collective hard work of our students, their families, our teachers and school leaders,” said Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran. “With the implementation of our new B.E.S.T. English Language Arts and Mathematics standards, investments in early literacy, early learning and closing achievement gaps, and collaboration with school districts to implement data-driven supports like massively increased use of progress monitoring, we are setting our students and teachers up for success to increase students’ growth and achievement in the years to come.”

The K-12 Achievement index is comprised of six indicator areas: Achievement Levels, Achievement Gains, Poverty Gap, Achieving Excellence, High School Graduation and Advanced Placement. To develop the measure, Education Week used NAEP performance data, College Board data and graduation data from the US Department of Education.

Highlights of the 2021 September Quality Counts report include:

  • Florida outperforms the nation in 15 of 18 K-12 Achievement measures
  • Florida is ranked 2nd for improving the high school graduation rate.
  • Florida is ranked 3rd for improvement in grade 4 mathematics.
  • Florida is ranked 4th for improvement in grade 8 reading.
  • Florida is ranked 4th for improving the grade 4 poverty gap.
  • Florida is ranked 6th for proficiency in grade 4 mathematics.
  • Florida is ranked 6th in the nation for improving high advanced placement test scores
  • Florida is ranked 7th for the size of its grade 4 reading poverty gap.
  • Florida is ranked 7th for improving the grade 8 poverty gap.
  • Florida is ranked 8th or improvement in grade 4 reading.

They moan and complain about first amendment rights when a corporation like Twitter or Facebook use their right as sanctioned in their terms of use agreement with the end user to ban folks like MTG or Trump for violations of said terms of use, but they are totally cool with state and local governments banning books and see no issues with infringements on the first amendment there. Yup, makes sense, if the right wing extremists do it, it's okay, but if anyone else does it, it is not. Hypocrisy at it's finest.

My local library has a list of books banned by Christian organizations.....Harry Potter is one as well as The Wizard of Oz...it's a ridiculous list...reminds me of Mao's red guard burning all western literature and musical instruments to keep the Chinese from western "corruption" ....one would think a "Christian" in the true sense of the world would be the most tolerant person you could find...weird that it's exactly the opposite with the GOP crowd

The main problem I see is interpretation. The corruption of the modern church is just as complete as that of the republican party, and the same groups are responsible. I see the same bullshit "originalist" type interpretation of the bible as we see by supposed "legal scholars" on the right in regards to the constitution. It is bullshit because there is nothing originalist about their actions. They get to pick and choose how to interpret certain lines to benefit themselves, time and time again, hurting their "enemies", and cementing power.

And those, of the masses, that have been brainwashed by all of this will never understand how far down the fascist rabbit-hole they have dug themselves. It is sad, scary, angering, and absolutely heartbreaking.

In my experience, it’s a mistake to ascribe a singular viewpoint to a “modern church”. Views on social issues vary widely by denominations and regions.

Noted. However, this shit is rampant throughout the whole of the American Christian zeitgeist. Are there some factions that are more insulated than others? Sure. But, that underlining sentiment still exists all throughout the American Christian experience.
