Why not try to trade for the following

Joe Mauer and Chase Headley, if nothing else for next year. I think they both could be had at the right price. Mauer is the face of the organization but you never know.

Mauer may be acquired only if Minnesota was looking to do a salary dump. Otherwise he is their face of the organization. Headley could be had for a starter and reliever I feel plus a low level prospect.

The Yankees are trying to get out from under all the big long term contracts. Mauer is due 115M over the next 5 years (23M per) And has not seen his 2009 season 28/96/365 before or since.

And Sorry but Chase Headley is not only not worth 8.5M per but IMO he's also not worth a starter a reliever & a low level prospect. I don't know where his 2012 season came from 31/115/286 when his season high HR total before that was 12. But I don't see him reaching that again. And this year he's hitting 230 with only 7 HRs & 31 rbi. JMO.
