Why?

There is a belief that just being born in the United States gives you some inalienable right of uniqueness and that you're wonderful and special and going to be whatever you want to be and that has been transformed into a culture of spoiled brats, self-entitlement and denial. Then they blame something like "bullying" or a "personality disorder" and go get medicated and someone tells them that its ok.

However, when the loser finds out that they're a loser, they can't handle it and go batshit insane and decide to take everyone out with them.

I firmly believe one factor is the upsurge in apocalyptic BS floating around. Everyone from some fundamentalist groups to extremist political groups to fans of ancient Mayan calenders are ranting about how the end of the world is nigh, and nothing can be done about it. Even a moron knows the difference between TV/video games and real life. This stuff, however, is coming from supposedly "respectable" authority figures.

You pour that nihilistic crap into the ear of a mentally disturbed person - and what do you expect?
also, you know, the bible having that in there as well.

...when you say why, why? Tell them that's it human nature, why, why...

Just a thought but would it do any good to make people more responsible for their own guns? I mean the Clackamas guy stole his gun from a friend, should'nt the friend have some liability in not properly locking up and keep his gun safe? If you drink and drive and kill someone you get manslaughter, if you overserve at a bar and they kill someone you get charged also.

I think we should all be responsible for everything. Put us all in jail.

I think there needs to be more "hands on" parenting. Parents need to be around more...... not letting kids sit on the fucking internet and play video games all the time. In moderation of course. Get in their business and see what they are doing in their spare time and who they are hanging out with. I had to have a talk with my son who is 11 about the Clackamas shootings and how there are just some flat out bad people out there. I realize parents can't be around all the time, but I think it would help.

My wife is in Hawaii for work this week, and I'm holding off on discussing the week with the kids until she gets home tomorrow.

Does that mean she was a shitty parent this week because she had to work her ass off away from home?

Of course not. You know what I mean. Even if it's just 1 parent, they need to be involved!

Agreed. I quit my job to stay at home with our girl when she was born a couple of years ago. It's a big financial struggle, for sure, but worth it, IMO.

I hope you know I was being sarcastic, HCP! Parents do whatever they can to provide their kids with a better life than they had. If that means traveling for work, then that is just part of providing for your family.

My wife stayed home for 3 years, and then I quit my job and took on project work as a consultant for the next 3 years, which paid the bill too, but was inconsistent in terms of when projects were completed. Then, the economy started to crumble, and I'm back as a corporate mid-level dude, as is my wife, although she at least is in management.

Good for you for staying home! I loved it, and I would not have traded it for anything.

I know you were bro!

I would love to shadow you at work one day! Bring you gardener to work day!

I don't totally disagree with you, but I'll say that 17 year old are legally not allowed to see R-rated movies unless with their parents/guardians, or play M video games. Does that help?

I don't really know, to be honest.

as info comes out there will be time to discuss if it could have been prevented, early warning signs, etc

right now its best to just hug your kids, mourn for the victims families, and if you believe in a god, pray

I have to admit this one is just beyond belief. I felt such incredible sadness all day.

There is no great increase in violence in America, the opposite is actually true. There is no great increase in mass shootings, they are less frequent than death by bee sting or death by lightning strike.

The increase is in media prostitution of these extremely rare but tragic events, and in the guileless opportunism by gun control advocates. Both should be utterly ashamed of their actions.

I don't really know if this is true, but since 2007 or so it seems this stuff just doesn't stop.

We all have.

I'm sorry if you thought I was laughing at the deaths, but I was just trying to be glib and witty on purpose.

Let's talk policy in a few days, and take emotion out of it.

As long as we keep making celebrities out of mass killers, lunatics will keep wanting to join that club.

I think a lot of it has to do with mental illness and our countries complete lack of help for those who are mentally ill.

4 people out of 300+ million?

Good luck controlling that sample. What is your proposal?

That was a low remark on my part.

I owe you an apology.

Or they are in charge of making square watermelons

Over-all, violent crime may be decreasing. This kind of pseudo terrorist attack seems to be becoming more common.

(by "pseudo terrorist, I mean that the motives may not have been political or religious fanaticism....but the methods were)
