I re-read this article this morning...........all of the things Jeff said going into the LVSL and just had to shake my head. Caused me to wonder if he'll be nothing more than a bit player in his career...........then, more expediently, caused me to wonder if the Blazers shouldn't just go ahead and package him in a deal towards getting a "real" backup PF into town.............(albeit, using those same services of Camby notwithstanding....)

http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2010/07/trail_blazers_jeff_pendergraph.html

Published: Wednesday, July 07, 2010 - TUALATIN -- He hopes to improve his midrange jump shot. He'd like to become as adept at using his left hand around the basket as he is at using his right hand. And he'd love to blossom into more of a leader.

But more than anything, Trail Blazers forward Jeff Pendergraph has one goal heading into his second round of Las Vegas Summer League play.

"I'm trying to dominate, man," he said. "I want to dominate summer league. I want to come back when we have training camp and kick butt in training camp and push everybody. I want to get better. I want to make our guys better.

"I want to do what I can do to help us get over that hump that we seem to hit in the playoffs. That starts now at summer league and if I have come in here and go hard at everybody, regardless of who it is, then that's what I have to do.".............

I'd say the odds are heavily against Jeff ever being a regular '8 man rotation' kind of player, he's too stiff, he's too old and ultimately just a little too small to be much more than he currently is, which is a whirlwind of energy, 6 hard fouls and a war dance leader. Nice guy, but still ultimately nothing much more than a scrub.

Chicago would never do this, but......

Rudy, Pendy, and Bayless

for

Gibson & Noah

23 is to old to make something of himself in the NBA? If he gets some nice minutes he will probably be a good 15 to 20m energy guy. His big problems are his tendency to foul which can be attributed to his trying to out muscle people instead of us his quickness to get position, something that with playing time he'll work out. His ball handling isn't that great either, but from what you want him to do, which is get garbage buckets and go for every rebound he can, you can overlook that.

You just perfectly described a scrub in the NBA

Correct. Chicago would NEVER do that trade.

As to Pendy, it looks more and more like he will have a short stint in the NBA. However, with 15-man rosters he has a bit more of a chance to see a second NBA contract.

The one thing that makes me pause is that summer league is nothing more than a semi organized pick-up game. Some players excel at that and some don't. The NBA league games are a lot different and perhaps- just perhaps- his game is better suited for that. He is a hustle player and he can bang. Maybe we can get some good work out of him.

Or, perhaps.............

Camby, Rudy, Bayless, and Pendy

for

Noah, Gibson, and a Chicago 1st Rounder

I'm sure Cho's whiz-bang trade application is coming up with all the permutations, though.............. ;)

Still makes no sense at all.

Why would Chicago trade their top 2 'bigs' for Camby & Pendy?

Mark bryantt 2. his major attribute is the intensity and determination

I would say the majority of mid to late 1st round picks end up being second team players. The majority of second round players (if they make it) are the "scrubs'. But you still need scrubs on every team.

You don't NEED scrubs... the reality is that they just tend to fill up rosters because of lack of superior options.

Pendergraph may be a scrub now, but he's a scrub with potential. In a couple of years, he hasn't improved out of the scrub stage, we should replace him with another player who's got the potential to be more than a scrub.

Ed O.

Pendo is about as bad as it gets offensively in the NBA. I watched SL hoping that he would have improved some part of his game on the offensive end. But he didn't, he was absolutely horrible.

Good energy guy. Nice guy for hard fouls, but definitely not someone I want to count on to produce.

any thoguhts on if Dante is the same thing as Pendy, just shorter?

I'm sure Nate will be looking at that. Too, playing alongside Camby or Joel won't hurt any. :)

Step 1: Demonstrate a well defined NBA skill
Step 2: Add additional skills
Step 3: Become a high quality well rounded NBA player

JP tried step 2 this summer league, and showed he needs to finish step 1 first. His well defined NBA skill is rebounding. His next skill should be improving his man and team defense. If he does that, he'll be a capable rotation player. I think that's possible for him, but I don't expect step 3 out of him in his NBA career.

Correction. Chicago would never be offered that trade.

Well of course; Mr. Cho wouldn't want to be laughed off the phone in his first month as GM.

He looked pretty bad in Vegas. If he's lucky he could be an Aaron Williams type..

Too old? I thought he was 2nd in Vegas in rebounding. I wouldn't say scrub, just not a regular rotation type.

He's 23, which tends to imply "what you see is what you get" there probably won't be much more growth.

too small? Dude might not be talented/coordinated enough, but over half the HOF is filled with guys smaller then him. Dude is about the same size as Amare and is a solid run jump athlete too.

Jeff plays like a center. I know he's listed as a power forward, but in reality his skillset makes him an undersized 5 ... and as for Hall of famers smaller than him, I'm guessing they were a helluva lot more talented than Jeff.

Amare has made several All Star games as a center. Athleticism and size aren't Jeff's limitations, skills/coordination are

Nice guy, but still ultimately nothing much more than a scrub.

His macho reputation for not being nice is the only advantage he supposedly has. He's a C, not a F, with a ceiling of maybe a Duane Causwell or even maybe a Kelvin Cato, but that's just dreaming.

Pendergraph may be a scrub now, but he's a scrub with potential.

The new development being discussed here is that the Summer League showed he has less potential than thought.

I think that gets into the area of combine-type athleticism vs. real game athleticism. Tough to separate out athleticism and coordination in that respect... Likewise, we've seen Pendy demonstrate a good shooting stroke in practice, but little ability to translate that to game speed. I would have to say the skills are there. He just doesn't have the tools to put them to use. I've always felt he's way too slow/deliberate laterally to be a productive rotation player, and that affects all phases of his game.
