Williams Upset Nets Picked Up Option

Donaguay "opted out" of his contract, and see where that got him.

I don't see anything wrong with him asking Rod for this. It's not like Rod is going to listen to him but it's good to be honest. Maybe somebody would overpay him based on potential and get a better opportunity to play, can't blame Sean for trying to get to that faster rather than just sitting at the end of our bench and watching his value drop on a game by game basis. I really don't think this was mean to be a distraction but rather a sit down with the GM that the papers ran with.

Why? The only type of deal he can get is one that's based on his potential, and not actual production. Sounds like the rookie pay scale to me.

Wasn't Nick Young taken one pick ahead of us?
The rookie pay scale isn't the market, though. It's a slotted system.

What I'm saying is that he isn't really worth anything different than what he's getting paid now.

I think someone would give him more than 2.5 guaranteed over 2-3 years, GMs will chase young, tall upside players. But I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Your handle fits your NBA thought process.

It's a team option for a reason.

Meh, this whole thread is silly. He's not upset about anything, he'd like to get a chance to test free agency sooner but he said it was no indication of not wanting to be here. Now that issue is passed and I highly doubt we'll see Kidd-esque shenanigans or pouting because of it.

Sean went from being the best player in camp to being mentioned in trade rumors to benched for our first two games of the season so I get why he'd be eager to either solidify his relationship with us or move on. Maybe Rod and Lawrence are making the right move by keeping Sean an intriguing prospect to potential suitors but from his perspective it's got to be a frustrating position to be in even if he's being a good teammate in the process.

There is nothing wrong with looking out for yourself as long as it doesn't cause a distraction to the team, which I highly doubt any of this will.

I understand that it's a move that allows Rod to turn him into a better trade chip, which is a no brainer move for us. Sean simply went to Rod and told him what he would like and I personally have no problem with it from either party's perspective.

I actually hope that sit down lead to an honest discussion of what Rod sees for Sean and how he can improve his role on our team as well as letting him know the reality of him being traded.

Excuse me, but are you saying that SWat was hoping that he had played badly enough that Nets wouldn't have picked up his option?

If that is the case, I have to ask, who do you think is more stupid, you or SWat?

How you got that from my post is beyond me.

It's the 2nd game of the season. I think he would get more than 2.5 mil guaranteed in his next deal.

Maybe not, now that he has revealed what a gaping asshole he is.

HE JUST BROADCAST THAT HE WAS DISAPPOINTED THAT NETS PICKED UP HIS OPTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anything more need to be said, other than Nets will be very willing to include him in a trade?

So you are saying SWat is more stupid than you.

Is that what you are saying?

I'm saying you're being over reactionary to a simple request from an employee to his boss. In no way do I think Sean is doing anything basketball wise than what he believes will get him a spot in our rotation. Despite getting rave reviews he's now found himself relegated to the bench and is having trouble figuring out how to work his way back in. Maybe he doesn't see a light at the end of the tunnel in Frank's doghouse or maybe he's just anxious to get the second deal signed because it's something that weighs on him with the uncertainty of his role on our team. I know we'd like every player to just put that kinda stuff out of their heads and play like it's a non issue but for some kids it just is. I think he genuinely likes it here and just wanted to know we wanted him as a player and not as some trade chip.

He's self-interested, like most people are.

He's self-interested, like most people are.

REALLY? That's what you interpreted the situation as being?

Tell me, when was the last time an INCREDIBLY disappointing 1st round pick was unhappy that his team picked up his 3rd year option.

I anxiously await your reply/

So you feel, based on SWat's performance last season, and his performance in this years exhibition season (including his turning down a starting assignment), SWat has the right to make demands of ANY TYPE from Nets' Management?

Is that what you are saying?

I also anxiously await your reply.

I see no reason that a player shouldn't be able to have a discussion with management about his contract, be it 1-15 on our roster. He was simply letting his feelings be heard and i'm sure Rod told him why he decided to pick up his option anyways.

Thank You.

I'll assume you think that SWat somehow increased his worth with his statement?

First, I don't think he's been incredibly disappointing. Incredibly is a little strong. Lots of players in his draft area did not produce right off the bat.

If a player thinks he's undervalued, I would think he would want to hit the market. Do you think most people aren't self-interested? They should be. The teams are.

Where did he demand anything?

I don't think anything has changed at this point because he didn't say that he wanted out of NJ and as far as we've been told he's nothing short of a good teammate. I don't think this will scare off anyone that wasn't already interested in his potential nor do I think it will stop anyone from picking up the phone if they already haven't. I think he's an anxious kid who told a reporter what happened and if GMs aren't dumb enough to think they can successfully lowball Rod because of something as minor as this then best of luck to them.

For all we know, he is being honest and just wants a longterm deal and it's not even about the money.

That's what i'm choosing to believe at this time given his statement.

And I'm choosing to believe he is a moron that just brought down his trade value.

Let's consider other second year players that have been incredibly successful. Wouldn't they rather their teams hadn't picked up their 3rd year options so they could become UFAs, and make LOTS OF MONEY in their 3rd year.

And yes, SWat has been an INCREDIBLE disappointment, even turning down a start in the exhibition season, when NO PLAYER on the Nets needs court time more than SWat.

Now I hope Nets sit SWat this entire season, than pick up his 4th year option. SWat is quite the MAHROOOOON.

Not sure why you would think so. Any GM who thinks that players aren't looking out for themselves is kidding themselves.

Yes, most probably would rather be UFAs. Why wouldn't they?

When you compare him to other players in his draft area, I don't see how you could say that. Especially since the 2nd season has barely begun.

Making decisions out of spite isn't what I would call reasonable.
