offensive line is bigger than the Green Bay Packers.... If the Ducks can beat Stanford on the farm and make the Rose Bowl, I think Wisconsin is a bad match up for us!

They will do the same things LSU and Auburn did to us with huge O line pushes and gaps! Further the Badgers have a very versatile QB and running + passing attack....

Thoughts?

I think this is the dilemma that we will have to deal with if we hope to ever be considered an elite program. How can we ever call ourselves one of the best if we can't beat the Alabama's, the LSU's, the Auburn's, or even a school like Wisconsin? They have the big offensive and defensive lines, so we either need to figure out how to beat them on the field with what we have, or off the field in recruiting.

Bielema sucks at coaching, and he sucks outside the state of Wisconsin.

It's a good question. Wis is a potential matchup and it wouldn't be a kind one. The comforting thing is that it isn't JUST Oregon that would struggle in that matchup -- it's nearly everyone in the nation.

There is good and bad here. Boise St and tOSU manhandled us, but we've done well against Auburn and LSU -- compare the defensive stats and Oregon stacks up very well against defending those teams compared to how other SEC teams have performed.

For me, I'm more concerned with getting our running game going against OOC, ranked teams, because we've really struggled. Solid run game opens up the field and leads to successful pass game. Run game changes momentum and wears down DL's. Our defense seems to do their thing. We just need to find a way to move the chains and get more points on the board during tough OOC games. Be it different schemes, a power run game to compliment the spread or better/bigger men on the OL -- somethings got to give.

PS didnt we show we could beat Wisconsin like a decade ago when Oregon was much less of a program with much less depth? (Yes I know a decade ago means nothing... but since we are talking hypotheticals...)

I'm just wondering why a doom and gloom :MARIS61: thread when we have half a season to go still. Yes Wisconsin is very good. Oregon is also very good. But a lot has to happen still for both teams to meet up.

Yes, the 2001 Ducks (Fiesta Bowl year) defeated a top 25 Wisconsin in the season opener 31-28.

Bellotti done good!

How is it a gloom and doom thread to suggest how to beat a team we have a 95% chance of seeing in the Rose Bowl with a O line that will cause the Ducks huge problems? Wheels do you ever think before you post, or can't you see past your duck homerism long enough not to make yourself look so ingorant on a very relevant topic that has already burned us twice for the nation to see?

We beat them 10 years ago is your retort? WOW! Really? Just shut up and let the grown folks talk now! Geez!!

Away from that nonsense.....

The Ducks D does a great job on 1st and 2nd down, but every 3rd we play almost prevent defense on the underneath pass and that one with an accurate QB like Luck or Wilson will kill us. Our DB and CB's are not very tall to begin with, large TE's or recievers could prove the difference with a great top 5 team. We may have to play with a rover type role at the LB and FS for that dump pass on 3rd.

This offseason we really need to recruit tall DB's and CB's. I think if we get these three defensive line kids on board who have given verbals and a taller backfield this team could be amazing on defense next year and for years to come!

Our offense in my mind needs to be two td's ahead against top 10 teams as a built in cushion to compensate for our bend don't break defense. The Ducks are more than capable of this though!

^ WOW! Who's this guy cracking' on my boy Wheels?

Our defense is not that bad. Oregon ranks almost dead last in T.O.P. and considering the amount the defense has to stay on the field I feel they do pretty well. The thing that most concerns me is the lack of turnovers we've had. Last year we had a 0.9+ Turnover margin which was in the top 15 in the nation and we also averaged 2.8 Takeaways a game which was good for 2nd. This year we're 73rd in Turnover margin and 97th in Takeaways a game.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I kinda hope you guys do play Wisky in the Rose Bowl. The Badgers are coming to Corvallis next season and it would be good to scout them some more.

How did you suggest how to beat Wisconsin? You asked your thoughts to your comments about how Wisconsin will manhandle us like other teams did where one we lost on Turnovers, and the other lost by a whopping 3 points.

we have a 95% chance of seeing in the Rose Bowl

Wheels do you ever think before you post,

rarely

or can't you see past your duck homerism long enough not to make yourself look so ingorant

Dont you know? I feel the Ducks will go on a 97 game win streak! There is no way it wont happen!!

on a very relevant topic that has already burned us twice for the nation to see?

LOL if you think the National Title loss was on the Defense.

We beat them 10 years ago is your retort? WOW!

It is lame I agree. But also on one hand... I have a box score and stats, and results to point out an irrelevant topic. I eagerly await the box score and final score for our future game we will be playing. :devilwink:

I was hoping that MSU might give the Badgers a loss on the road but MSU just suspended one of their very tough defensive players... Although I still think this could be a trip up game for Wisconsin. MSU is on a high with win over Michigan and hopefully that will carry over.

LSU has suspended their #1 rushing and defensive option for game against Auburn so who knows... maybe hope for Auburn...

UW might shock Stanford as I don't think the happy trees have played anyone yet this year who might give them some sort of a challenge!

We'll see......

Two hypothetical scenarios--which would you prefer?
  • Oregon loses to Stanford, wins all remaining games, then beats Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl.
  • Oregon beats Stanford, wins all remaining games, then loses to Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.

I prefer scenario #3.

Ducks win all remaining games, including the natty

Weak answer. Obviously the unnamed "#3" would be preferable, which is why I didn't include it. What I'm trying to get at is, what's more important to you--conference supremacy, or national relevance?

Looking at the Big 10, for instance--who would you say had a better year last year? Wisconsin, who won the conference but lost to TCU in the Rose Bowl, or Ohio State (exclusive of rules violations and vacated wins), who didn't win the conference, but beat Arkansas in their BCS bowl?

Clearly it'd be best to have both, but if you had to choose between one or the other this year, which one would you pick?

actually a pretty good hypothetical here. Made me think. (hey look at that I do sometimes think before I post :devilwink:)

I'd go with Losing to Standford and winning a BCS bowl game. If we lose to Stanford it can be more easily brushed off in the media and more importantly recruits. (i.e. "They were on the road against a very good team and it was a conference game etc etc)

Losing another BCS game piles it on in the media as "Chip Kelly teams cant win the big game" "They got manhandled" "yet another Bowl Loss" etc etc

I'd rather lose to Stanford and have Wisconsin crack them for the nation to see in the Rose Bowl and play OK State! Our offense and theirs are fun to watch and a great game could be had. Further I think winning your bowl game is more important than winning your conference, money for school and recruits follow and watch bowls...

Keep in mind many think we'll be playing the Sooners not the Cowboys if that scenario played out, and the Sooners is just like playing Wisconsin, LSU and Bama! Huge lines and they have fast skilled players to boot.

So I take option #4

Win out and create a new defensive scheme either with slants or rovers to out finesse that size we'll be seeing in the bowls...

We'll know a bunch more after we see Wisconsin play a few games away from home too....

lol What about Option 45A Under article 5

I don't like your scenarios, but out of the two I'd take a Fiesta Bowl win. Badgers should roll against their two remaining tough opponets -- MSU and Ill.

WOW Wheels! That almost sounds like a grown up retort! Good for you!

haha dont take stuff so personal. You dont see Nate crying when he did the same scenario deal and I mock him about it.

I do enjoy your All Cap "!!!" posts. They amuse me, so keep it up please!

Wisconsin really doesn't play anyone do they this year? Their schedule is pretty watered down!

If Oregon wants to take that "next step" they're going to have to beat teams like Wisconsin. The Badgers are a very good team but so are we. I'd just like to wait and see who we play first before all these hypothetical questions keep popping up.

or at least before we freak out about how a team will kill us, who we might not even play. Why dont we also start threads about how Bama would kill us?!?! :MARIS61:

Because obviously we have no shot at playing Alabama this year
