No win for the police. Using NYC for example, 96% of shooting victims are black and latino people. 97% of all shooting suspects are black or latino.

The cops can stop and search the population that is doing all of the very worst violent crimes, from whom people of all colors want to be protected, and be assholes for profiling. Or, they can make sure they search white people (who aren't committing these crimes) 50% of the stops, and not protect the people who need protection.

Actually, I wonder if blacks and latinos in NYC, given a chance to vote, would support stop and search. They are the ones being killed by these guys. Being a white guy, I can't speak for them about whether more safety is worth more searches of innocent minorities. I would guess that younger people would say no, and older folks would feel better about more protection.

The problem, imo, is less about the police (though they have their piece of it) and more about a small percentage of asshole black and latino people fucking things up for their own races.

I get it that it's easy for me to say submit to profiling, given that I'm not the one that is being harrassed. I just don't see it as such a black and white answer.

What seems lost in the Chicago fuss is that they already have some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation. Yet, bad shit happens. Giving up your guns doesn't keep bad shit from happening.

That doesn't take away from the fact that a lot of the race that enslaved black people died ending that deplorable practice.

I know that I was born after the Nazi Holocaust, as were the vast majority of Jews now living. And it affects us. And that did not happen in my country. So I don't find it hard to imagine that lynchings still impact African-Americans, especially when, sadly, racial profiling is still very much an issue, and has led to killing of innocents.

I've never met anyone who complained about their lot in life except those who really have nothing to complain about.

My father's father fled Yugoslavia at age 18 to escape some horrific ethnic cleansing being performed there. Never saw what was left of his family again. He loved America, loved being a Real American, and never spoke of his childhood terror and certainly never used it as a crutch.

The past is past, especially for those born after it has already passed.

Lazy, self-pitying losers dwell in the past, but usually not in their own past since it's so much like the past of all their peers and nothing to pity. If someone wants to throw a pity party, don't invite me.

Meanwhile, RIGHT NOW IN OUR DAILY LIVES (not yet in our history books) young black men murder 14 times more than young white men. Overall, blacks commit murder at 9 times the white rate.

I don't know how this applies to this thread, but I don't see it any different at all. Sometimes I think a boy being raped by a man is pretty fucking traumatic. Hell I was raped by my babysitter when I was 8.

I'm talking institutional racism, you're talking individual. This is a country that made it legal to own people, make them not count as a whole person, and legal to discriminate against them basically up until the 60's. That had a long term impact on people and our prejudices and beliefs about people. (Unless they are younger than MARIS61, and it's just something they read in a history book)

But the point is WHY are they disproportionately pulled over/frisked? Why are they targeted, despite the #'s suggesting they shouldn't be? Why does what happened 100 years ago have an impact today? If it doesn't, why isn't, then, the south completely free of racism? why isn't Portland free of racism?

Why is there air? Racism will always exist in everyone at some level, even if only subconsciously. It is ingrained in our survival instinct and to some degree protects us from harm.

The only impact bad things in history have on today is making us feel better, and smarter, and more compassionate than our predecessors. It's called EVOLUTION.

It's got nothing to do with America. It's the same anywhere you go. Their ancestors were all assholes too. Name one time in history when the ruling class wasn't barbaric, slaughtering the masses for pleasure and profit.

My rape was from a teenage girl, so I'm not as unlucky as the boys getting raped by men. But it was still really hard to cope with. I could only imagine what it could be like for a boy getting sodomized.
