This isn’t a conversation about us white folk. It’s a conversation we’re all trying to engage in. It’s clear that white lives matter. We’ve lived some form of privileged life simply by being white. I see it as blacks reminding folks that their lives matter and they shouldn’t be treated as less based on skin color. I see it as a reminder to police and other institutions in power that black lives matter and the treatment of black folks and the policies put in place need to consider them. It’s a reminder that they exist and should have equal representation at the table. If you think they’ve had equal treatment, equal consideration in policies, equal representation, I don’t know what to tell you (well, I do, but I won’t publish it on a public forum).
Us white folks that support the BLM movement know all lives matter. BLM knows all lives matter. BLM isn’t trying to say that not all lives matter or that other lives matter less. It’s just that when you talk over BLM with ALM you’re the BLM movement and slowing down social equality. That’s why they’re saying STFU. You’re talking over them. If you talk over BLM, you’re against it because you’re not stepping up and helping push forward social equality. And I agree with BLM.
I’m sure I’m missing some points here. Tired of people not understanding it and being defensive about it. If you are not going to help further the BLM movement and you agree that all lives matter, then at least just stay quiet and let BLM do it’s thing rather than try to slow the movement by talking over or distracting from it.
as someone that doesnt live in the USA, these are the parts that confuse me. what i see in this is - having an opinion or talking about it is 100% only talking OVER it, which is the biggest barrier i can see in dialogue in the USA.
there is no middle for discussion without instant polarisation of opinion.
ie
A) I like oranges!
B) so you hate apples?
A) no i dont hate apples, I just like oranges.
B) ok Hitler.
rather simplistic but thats the nutshell view many people i know outside the USA seem to share.
there is no middle.
ie in this, saying ALM is bad, cause youre talking over BLM, not talking with, its definitely over, and people shouldnt have an opinion on race if they are x race cause racism.
the whole "stay quiet" thing is just bad imo. its either 0 or 100, agree with everything we say in lockstep or stfu and you're evil.
sadly enough, the middle is where many people are and encouraging them to stay quiet only widens the gap.
stuff gets done in the middle.
i wish you guys well, but i think its more the start of the divided states of america than united at this point.
happy to hear any 'discussion' on a path to betterment that doesnt require silencing opinions you hate hearing or whatever.
we actually talk about things down here, it does wonders tbh.
