(CNN)A woman shot and killed by Minneapolis police had called 911 to report a possible crime near her home, a source who knew her said.

Justine Ruszczyk called 911 on Saturday night because she thought a sexual assault might be taking place in a back alley near her home, the source said.

But after Minneapolis police arrived, an officer shot and killed Ruszczyk.

Police still haven't explained how, or why.

The shooting happened as two Minneapolis police officers responded to a 911 call reporting a possible assault shortly before 11 p.m., Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges said.

The officers were wearing body cameras, but they were not turned on during the incident, the mayor said.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety is now handling the case. The DPS' Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said authorities are in the initial stages of investigation and are "working to learn more about the events that transpired."

Probably. I would really like to know what led to them firing their weapons. Frankly I think they need to completely alter the kind of person they hire to be police officers.

Just like in the Philando Castile shooting the police will say they smelled marijuana and instantly feared for their lives.

I'd really like to know more about the cameras and how they work. Do they keep track of off and on periods? If they were erased is there a record of that function being used?

Obviously whoever this cop was, was trigger happy. I doubt he got off on it like people believe in these kinda shootings but man that job is tough. Nobody can do that job. There are good cops but there are a ton of shitty ones. I feel for them though as they have families and in a certain situation they can legitimately believe they are in danger and shoot the person. It's a fucked job.

I'm going to guess that this woman called 911, then took a weapon out there to see what the problem was. Cops show up to what they think is a violent crime in progress with no details as to whom the subject is, see a woman with a weapon, and.........

It wouldn't be the first time this has happened. At all.

Very sad either way.

She had a strange accent so they shot her

This is getting ridiculous. Cant even call the cops now without them killing you.

The officer that shot her was the first Somali on the force and has two open complaints.

I highly highly doubt she was armed. She was some kind of meditation guru. Do those people strike you as the kind to go around armed?

Are you fucking kidding me?!?

Three sources with knowledge of the incident said Sunday that two officers in one squad car, responding to the 911 call, pulled into the alley. Damond, in her pajamas, went to the driver’s side door and was talking to the driver. The officer in the passenger seat pulled his gun and shot Damond through the driver’s side door, sources said. No weapon was found at the scene.

He shot across his partner in an enclosed area?!? So so stupid.

You don't think a Meditation Guru is capable of grabbing a kitchen knife and going off to look for a rapist?

People have done stranger things.

Again: it was just a guess. I trust we'll find out what really happened as time progresses. But it wouldn't be the first time someone called 911 and then charged off with a weapon to inject themselves into a dangerous situation without thinking first.

One of the things Self Defense Instructors teach those who carry firearms is to avoid dangerous situations if at all possible, and to not go charging into a situation after calling the police. If you do have to call the police while having someone at gun point, for example, make sure you clearly describe the situation you are in, as well as what you look like, and be sure to tell dispatch that you have the subject at gun point. And make sure you are clearly visible and follow the officer's instructions IMMEDIATELY when they arrive.

But that's an extreme circumstance. I trust that we'll find out what happened here in the weeks to come.

He shot across his partner in an enclosed area?!? So so stupid.

That really depends on what the circumstances were from the officer's perspective, don't you think?

She did not have a weapon unless she ate it right before dying.

He shot from a seated position in a tightly enclosed space across his partner's body. His actions put his partner in extreme danger.

I'm not denying that it was dangerous. I'm simply saying that, depending on the circumstances that HE saw at the time, it may have been perfectly reasonable.

I once read a story of a cop who shot a violent dog dead who was attacking his partner during a welfare check. Obviously, shooting towards the direction of his partner would probably be something that he would never have thought of doing in any other circumstance. Do you see my point?

Just because it's dangerous, doesn't always make it unnecessary.

Ultimately, like I said....we'll know more details as time progresses. Gotta keep an open mind, all of us.

WTF!!!!

There better be a damn good reason for him shooting his firearm across his partners body.

The only scenario I can imagine it being neccessary is if he believed they were gettibg ambushed, yet she talked to them through the driver side window. If they had a conversation that goes out the door. Or maybe she called the cops on false pretenses and then upon arrival walked up to the car and told them she was going to shoot them. Suicide by cop.

But, its crazy that there are so few details about what happened. The only witness is dead no cameras. These cops can spin it anyway they want.
