My real hope, and our biggest need, is a rim protecting big that is also a great pick and roll defender. A big that knows how to defend the pick and roll will help Dame and C.J. tremendously on the defensive end.
This is why Al Horford would be such a great fit in POR.
This article is over a year old and the author gushes a bit too much, but he's right on about Horford's pick and roll defense. He's not spectacular, but may be the most fundamentally sound big man defender this side of Tim Duncan. He's always in the right position with his arms extended in the passing lanes. He doesn't get a lot of spectacular blocks, but he uses his length well both on the perimeter and in the paint. He blocks 1.5 shots per game, alters many more and is always among the leaders in lowest opponent FG% within 6 feet of the basket.
And, that's just on the defensive end. He's an efficient low post scorer and is equally effective running the pick and roll and diving to the basket, or running the pick and pop and knocking down the mid-range jump shot.
He'd really compliment Dame and C.J. at both ends of the court. He'd fill so many of our needs (rim protection, pick and roll defense, reliable 3rd scorer, low post offense, etc.). I've been gushing over Paul Millsap, but in many ways Horford is an even better fit. I hope there is some way Olshey can convince Horford that POR is the best destination and fit for him.
