I've only stated that Roy is not solely responsible for the Blazers' turnaround as your OP would seem to suggest. And you cannot convince me that a team with Roy and a bunch of scrubs would sniff the playoffs.
And if you are going to heap so much responsibility onto Roy, then what do you make of his first round exit? Sure, he played like a star on offense. How did that work out?
No, Roy and a bunch of stiffs wouldn't get into the playoffs.
However I don't see this as much of a knock on Roy.
The only players in the NBA who can pull a collection of garbage into the playoffs are named LeBron, Kobe and Wade.
There is no shame in not being at that level. Roy isn't right now and will probably never be.
But the teams turn around isn't just based on winning. Fans started coming back during the season they won 30 some games. They started coming back due to a massive "We changed the culture of the team" blitz that centered on B-Roy.
That couldn't have been comfortable or easy to deal with. Roy handled it with more class then I could have possibly hoped for.
Roy is very honest with his opinions when he is asked a question. And he gets killed for it.
Would you rather Roy just utter the typical athlete speak? If he never got quoted with his opinion would you be happier with him?
I am glad Roy is so up front with what he feels is needed by the team. Having opinions typically entails someone not agreeing with you. Roy has an opinion. Apparently a large number of people including some in the media don't agree.
Like it or not Roy is the man on this team right now and for the next 6 years. If you can't stand the guy or think he is arrogant you are in for a very long half a decade.
One last thing to keep in mind; these quotes are taken from a story by Jason Quick in the Oregonian. How do you know he actually said what was printed? Reporters tend to take liberties with such things. Changing a few words could have a dramatic effect on tone.
Perhaps he said some other stuff along with those quotes that make them more reasonable. Who can say?
I for one have felt for some time Quick was a tool with an agenda. Jaynes used to do this same shit back in the day.
Until I see a video interview with Roy saying the above, as far as I am concerned there is only a 50/50 chance he actually said exactly that.
