Isn't atheism based on ignorance as well? Thinking something is true (there being no god) without knowing all the facts.

That depends. Will anybody ever know all the facts? Probability says never. What is the definition of all the facts? Do you really need all the facts to make a rational decision? Or do you only need some of the facts? As was also pointed out up above, the same could be said of theism. There is no more proof there is a god, then there isn't a god. So aren't all the believers in the same quandry as non believers? People on this planet have believed all sorts of dumb shit over the years. Hell it was only a few thousand years ago that masses of them worshiped roman gods who amazingly enough, were just sham priest who used their power to control the population. What a coincidence.

I know. I posted it. I just admit that I don't know, which is why I generally avoid these topics other than to point out literal differences between atheism and agnoticism. Some people, like me, are comfortable not knowing. Others pretend to know, one way or another, without really knowing.

I don't understand the source of your confusion. We should all be posting with good intentions, and claiming that a statement is stupid is significantly less offensive than calling another poster (or a group of posters with whom you disagree) an asshole.

I think you are confused about what I'm confused about. I get it that there is a difference between calling what someone wrote stupid and calling the author an asshole. That doesn't confuse me at all.

I'll take a shot at what I think you (and Minstrel) are saying the rules are:

We can call what someone writes stupid.
We can call what someone writes asshole-ly.

We cannot call the author stupid.
We cannot call the author an asshole.

I don't see much difference in the level of insult (and both are clearly meant to be insulting) by calling what someone wrote stupid, or calling what they wrote asshole-ly.

Then there's the grey area where MIXUM replies, "dont be stupid.", which seems like it might be attacking the poster, but might just be a shot at what was written, since it wasn't edited.
