Yeah, this is Merica dad gummit...I bet when the Donald takes office, we won't see no dad gum foreign language around here. Build that damn wall.

there's 1.35B chinese, aka nearly 20% of the world - and this is for the 'World Championship' right? seems fair.

Do we call it the world championship in the NBA? I thought baseball was the only sport that still used the word "World."

Donald hasn't learned yet...they built the biggest wall on the planet and it didn't stop the Mongolian hordes from conquering them

NBA has the same thing...World Champion Golden State Warriors...it's actually ridiculous...in a fair world, the Warriors need to now beat Tonga, and reach the Polynesian finals before they complete the World domination tour

Maybe we can only claim World Champ if we win the gold medal. Therefore the US is the best basketball country, so we can claim our best team is World Champ

yup, the world in the NBA/MLB etc sense is 320m people.

although, USA as a team are the current FIBA world champs.

To be fair, what other country is even remotely as good at basketball or baseball? Our country is SO good at baseball that the Olympics had to terminate softball as an event. We dominated the field. American football is another sport that no other country could even remotely compete in.

yeah but just because most of the rest of the world has no interest in competing, or it just isnt popular outside the borders isn't a default world victory, you still need a open world champs to claim the title.

its like down here with rugby union and rugby league, the All Blacks will more than likely murder most teams all the time, but for a world champion tag, we and other nations take on any and all competitors, even the USA :)

ditto cricket etc

most sports are trying to be global games - this really is only true with basketball in the USA, the rest are pretty insular - so yeah, i spose the 'world' is relative to most.

also i think you could be right about then NBA ditching teh 'world' part of the title, probably due to the obvious bs part of it, and rise of basketball globally, and the tag of world champs legitimately falling to FIBA champs

the most recent banners do say NBA Champs etc, last one if could find a pic of was the 07-08 Boston banner that said world champs. or that could jsut be boston being boston

Cuba

It's Chinese New Year. It was Monday but celebrations last for over a week. There is a sizable Chinese population in Houston. I think it's a nice gesture.

I see it more as a merchandising opportunity than a "nice gesture". Houston has a ton of Chinese fans and they are all going to want to buy these. That's why they did it.
