Rep. Mike McMahon Says No Stimulus for Atlantic Yards

One Brooklyn Congressman, our newest, is the first to be on the record saying that using stimulus funds to bail out Ratner's Atlantic Yards is not a priority:

McMahon on line 1: New Ridge Rep. loves the stimulus

The Brooklyn Paper

Bay Ridge’s freshman Rep. Mike McMahon backed the nearly $800-billion federal stimulus package on Friday — he’s a Democrat, after all — and promptly called The Brooklyn Paper buzzing about his first truly historic vote.

"It felt good," the former City Councilman said via phone from Washington. "It’s a very good package considering it had to be negotiated in two houses of Congress and across party lines."
...

"It was my amendment that added $3 billion for transit to the original House package, which brought it up to $10 billion," he said. "The Senate scaled it back to $8 billion, but there’s still $1.2 billion that will be coming back to New York."

McMahon said his priority for that money would be renovating B and M line stations in Bensonhurst, a plan nixed by the MTA last year — not funnel the money, as some have suggested, to Bruce Ratner to jumpstart the stalled Atlantic Yards project.

"That priority is fixing train stations and getting ferry service from Bay Ridge to Manhattan," he said. "I do not see Atlantic Yards as a priority for the money from this package."

Atlantic Yards is delayed for years unless Ratner can get Federal economic stimulus money to build it, and there's significant pressure building against allowing Ratner to build a stadium to move LeBron to Brooklyn with Federal money.

Lots of good Carter stuff here: http://www.nj.com/nets/index.ssf/2009/02/with_trade_deadline_looming_ne.html

An ESPN report even quoted two of these executives, each of whom stated that the Nets are trying to "give Carter away."

Remarkably, Thorn didn't exactly deny it when asked to comment on that perception, but he gave it his own spin.

"I've always said you do trades for two reasons," the Nets president said Wednesday night before the Nets faced the Mavericks. "You do them for the present, or you do them for what's best moving forward. Those are the only two reasons, as far as I'm concerned."

In other words, you can dump salary, for the sake of putting the franchise on more solid financial footing and in a better situation to compete in the 2010 free-agent market.

"You could look at trades in a different light," Thorn said. "But with anything we're trying to do, we're looking at what's in the best long-term interests of our team."

At the same time, Thorn does not want to give his peers the impression that there is a fire sale going on, so that he can get a better return for a 32-year-old who has $33 million in guaranteed salary the next two seasons.

As of Wednesday night, he was failing in that bid.

The Nets themselves can no longer afford him, as long as the team is stuck in the lottery. Their arena doesn't generate enough revenue, Brooklyn is years away, the improvement is coming too slowly to satisfy the small fan base, and their own financial losses figure to be in the same $30-35 million range this season.

So even as Thorn asks teams to take Carter's salary, they are getting cheeky: In some cases, they're asking for draft picks to sweeten the package.

Even the most recent development didn't pan out, because everyone is looking to shed big salaries as soon as possible: Whereas the Nets thought they could send Carter to Portland for Raef LaFrentz and spare parts, they are only one of a dozen teams in play for that expiring contract.

Go KP! Go KP! Go!

The only thing Thorn has left, these GMs believe, is the nuclear option -- dumping Carter's salary for pennies on the dollar -- and hoping the fans understand that it's all about clearing cap space for 2010, when the Nets hope business will pick up.

Thorn, however, is a competitive man who isn't ready to do that. He could get Tracy McGrady, but that would constitute a salary dump. He could get Jerry Stackhouse and Erick Dampier, but that too would constitute a salary dump.

Unless owner Bruce Ratner directs him to do otherwise -- which some team officials fear could happen -- Thorn will resist that option until 3 p.m. Thursday.

Is Thorn finally gonna get what he deserves for screwin us with the SAR deal?

Fuck 'em. There are better deals out there. The Nazr contract is easier to swallow than losing Rudy and a few draft picks if it means getting Gerald Wallace.

I don't want to take the chance and have Thorn backout of the deal after the deadline. Fuck Thorn. I don't want VC anyway and I believe KP really doesn't want VC that much either. I think KP is doing this to get Char or Was to byte on trading Wallace or Butler to us.

willing to add batum or take back a contract for wallace?

Very willing to take back a contract. Bring me Nazr Mohammed's head on a platter. No, wait, I mean his contract.

Blazers want first-round pick in a Carter deal

The Portland Trail Blazers are one of several teams interested in acquiring Vince Carter from the New Jersey Nets, but they reportedly are upping their asking price.

The Blazers had discussed sending Raef LaFrentz, Travis Outlaw and Sergio Rodriguez to the Nets for Carter, Maurice Ager and Chris Douglas-Roberts, but they now want a first-round draft pick as part of a deal, an NBA executive told Yahoo! Sports.

"I know they are desperate to trade Vince and teams know that," the source told the website. "And now teams are looking to rob them."

LaFrentz has an expiring contract and is being paid $12.7 million this season.

No thanks on VC. No thanks with Milwaukee either. Charlotte talks still goin', so that is good. Granger's name came up, most likely fake, but if there is any chance you trade the house for him. maybe his injury will decrease his value.

Caron rumors seem quiet, so that is either good or bad, imo. THey are either dead and he is off the table, or the silence around him is a good thing. Oh well...

Do that deal ASAP.

Here is the deal with our SF possition.

Outlaw can score, but can't do anything else. Thatis his biggest problem. When his shot isn't falling he rarely does anything else to help the team win.

Batum is a great all around player that does everything well. His only problem is inexperience.

Webster apparently has the worst hairline fracture in the history of the world. When healthy he was inconsistant at best last year.

That is why, IMO, this team coul dreally use a player like VC, Jefferson, Wallace, Butler or Deng. All of those players can give you more than just fade away 18 footers in the lane, and are all more consistant than Batum at this point. Let Nic develop with consistant playing time and learn behind someone with more skills than jacking up shots.

VC would be perfect because his contract is the perfect length to get Batum perfectly seasoned to take over. Then VC's contract would be a huge expiring deal that is not fully guaranteed. A team could trade 18 million in salary, and only have 4 million count against them with VC's contract.
