according to my understanding, thats not true. Unless a contract contain player options, that player can't get out of their contract and play professional ball elsewhere. This holds whether a player is seeking to potentially join or leave a team in the NBA.

If you know, how does restricted free agency apply to this type of situation? I'd imagine a restricted free agent could just walk to another pro league, as they're no longer truly under contract. Though maybe there is a provision there. Mostly just curious.

That's what Josh Childress did. He was an RFA and signed with Olympaikos in Greece. He's free to sign outside the NBA as an RFA, but if he ever returns to the NBA, he remains an RFA with Atlanta holding those rights.

See Josh Childress. He was an RFA when he went to Olympiakos. Atlanta retains his salary-matching rights if he chooses to sign in the NBA again unless/until they choose to renounce.
