Officials at the White House and State Department were advised two hours after attackers assaulted the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11 that an Islamic militant group had claimed credit for the attack, official emails show.

The emails, obtained by Reuters from government sources not connected with U.S. spy agencies or the State Department and who requested anonymity, specifically mention that the Libyan group called Ansar al-Sharia had asserted responsibility for the attacks.

The brief emails also show how U.S. diplomats described the attack, even as it was still under way, to Washington.

U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the Benghazi assault, which President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials ultimately acknowledged was a "terrorist" attack carried out by militants with suspected links to al Qaeda affiliates or sympathizers.

Administration spokesmen, including White House spokesman Jay Carney, citing an unclassified assessment prepared by the CIA, maintained for days that the attacks likely were a spontaneous protest against an anti-Muslim film.

This is a pretty big story.

I don't get it though. I mean I get that the govt. (and Obama) screwed up and 4 people, including our ambassador, were killed.

What I don't get is why they fought for 2 weeks to deny what was quite apparent to pretty much everyone else. Then they outright lied about it, and pretty much everyone else could tell. They even went after some guy who months ago made a youtube video and arrested him on some (likely) trumped up charge. They even dug through every bit of film footage looking for some speech he made that mentioned both the embassy attack and terrorism as if Obama linked the two.

Why did it take them 2 weeks to figure out everyone but them knew the truth? Why be such an utter FAIL at the lying about it?

Jay Carney's EXCUSE doesn't come close to cutting it. Sure, they may have been receiving all sorts of mixed intelligence beforehand, and made a poor choice (people are human, fine) to not defend the embassy better. But emails like this cannot be explained away. It's not Intel, it's a frigging string of emails from the embassy itself, and the individuals and organization responsible for the attack identified (AND THEY CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY).

In all fairness to the Obama administrtation, just because a terrorist group claims to be behind something doesn't make it so. And isn't there some plausible information that the attack may have been fueled, at least in part, by the supposed anti Muslim movie? I mean, I'm not necessarily saying this whole mess could have been avoided (that's also debatable), but they problably had thousands (or tens of thousands) of emails sent when this was going on or soon after and to pick out 1 of all those and then go with it without full verification seems ill advised to me.

hmmm lets see, real time emails from those under attack....drones flying overhead fo hours watching what was going on...warnings ahead of time...heavy arms, vs small cal , rpgs...yeah, sure with all the evidence and those on the ground telling the white house that it was an assualt...sure I can see why he would be conflicted

So ... why did the White House send Susan Rice out 5 days after the attack to solely blame the video, and why did both Obama and Hillary blame the video while they had the caskets of those killed lined up behind them?

I think, if/when the truth comes out, it will show that the drone was transmitting real-time video of the military assault to the President's Situation Room. They could have watched it happen, as it happened, if they chose to.

Here's what I want to know. Who, exactly, gave the order NOT to attempt to rescue the ambassador? Who made the decision to let 4 Americans die without a fight?

The US could have had air support there within an hour...and that's if they had to come from Italy. Troops could have been there in a couple of hours.

That article deals with the fact that Marines should have been guarding the ambassidor before anything happened, and should have been there to protect him.

I want to know who decided to NOT send troops/air support to attempt a rescue once they knew it was under way. Somebody had to make that call.

Could they have rescued them? I don't know. But our government didn't even try to save them. It's my understanding that the seige took hours. They just let four Americans die.

Someone needs to be held accountable, and BEFORE the election.

My understanding is they moved a number of assets all around the area but did not commit any to a rescue or defense of the embassy.

These included the movement of troops, ships offshore, commando teams, etc.
