10 Best cities in Oregon

Personally I couldn't live farther than 30 mins away from a major metropolitan city. I enjoy good restaurants and arts too much.

Because of that, I couldn't live at the coast all year round, but surprised that a coastal town wasn't on the list. Maybe there was a minimum population requirement.

The survey was very kind to Beaverton:

Beaverton’s sheer level of awesomeness is no secret; in fact, it has been hailed for years as one of the best cities in the U.S., let alone in Oregon. Over the past few years, Forbes has named it not only one of the best places to retire, but one of the 100 best places to live in general.
It’s no wonder. Beaverton has plenty of local amenities, it has a crime rate 31 percent lower than the state’s average, and it is only a few miles away from the highly rated trails at Washington Park. And if going for a hike isn’t your thing, don’t worry—Beaverton was ranked of the most walking-friendly cities by Prevention Magazine.

I lived in Beaverton for 4 years. We moved away as soon as we could afford a larger house.

"Roosh" Basically halfway between Medford and Grants Pass but right on the California border ... Pot growing country.

Your description was confusing (halfway between Medford and Grants Pass but right on the CA border), so I decided to stop being lazy and google mapped it.

Beaverton is a thundering concrete cacophony of gang-infested traffic snarl. It is #1 on my list of Worst Cities in Oregon.

Oregon is easily one of the most naturally beautiful, unique, diverse, and livable states in our country. It spurred the show “Portlandia”; it is the namesake of the best computer game ever, “Oregon Trail”; and the state motto is even beautiful: Alis volat propriis (she flies with her own wings).

So as a part of Movoto Real Estate’s ongoing series exploring some of the best places to live in America, state by state, we turned our analytical eyes toward Oregon. Here is our list of the 10 best cities in Oregon, ordered from amazing to simply excellent.

Bend
Sherwood
Beaverton
Milwaukie
Oregon City
Tigard
Portland
West Linn
Lake Oswego
Happy Valley

Where exactly is Bend and why is it sitting atop our list? What is Portland doing at No. 7? And how happy is Happy Valley? Keep reading, because we Sherwood like to tell you. The following paragraphs will explain how we got our list and will focus on the best parts of each city and just what makes them so special.
What Makes an Awesome City?

A lot of things make a city awesome, but in order to find these best cities in Oregon, we needed a list of measurable criteria across the board. So we came up with these eight:

Amenities
Cost of living (percent above or below state’s average)
Crime rate
Education
Median household income
Home value
Distance to closest 5-star rated hiking
Distance to closest ski resort

We started with a list of the 50 most populous cities in Oregon and ranked them from one to 50 in each of the criteria above, with one being the best. Then, we averaged the numbers for each city, gave them an overall Big Deal Score—the lower the number, the higher the city ranked.

Now that you know how we did it. Read on to find out just why each of our top 10 cities are so special and where they excelled.

This list is such a fucking joke. 9 out of the 10 mentioned are Portland. Let's face it, it's a metropolitan area. It's pretty much the same city. Certain areas are better than others, but to hand pick basically every suburb of Portland as the top 10 best in Oregon is just bullshit. Eugene is, has always been, and will always be, the best place to live in Oregon. And I love Portland, and have lived there.

That's not geographically possible but ok..

If you go 20 minutes SW of Medford or 20 minutes SE of Grants Pass you'll be in Ruch ... so yeah, half-way between, just not in a straight line.

You are incorrect sir. Beaverton is a wonderful place.

That's why I googlemapped it. It's not really "right on the border", depending what you consider "right on the border". And it's not really halfway between Medford and Grants' Ass via the crow's flight or typical driving methods (I-5), but I suppose if you take a crazy back road, it could be halfway.

15 miles North of the Border and the only way to get there is via "crazy back roads."

I don't describe Ashland to be "on the border" and it's closer than Ruch.

As for the "crazy back roads", I should have been more clear. I just meant it's not physically halfway between the Medford and Grants' Ass when you look at it on a map.

Basically, I was trying to say your description of the location weak/misleading, without actually saying it (no disrespect intended). Saying one OR city is midway between two other OR cities and yet still "on the border" really makes no sense in your description. I mean, Ruch is south of both of those cities (at least according to 3 maps I've looked at, including Google Maps). The only way your description could logically be true would be for all 3 OR cities to be on the OR/CA border.

Ruch must be quite the hole in the ground, i've never heard of it. If you want to get lost and never be found again, go to Chiloquin or Bonanza. Crazy indians and meth head white people.

Gotta say this discussion has raised pedantry to levels never before seen ... all over a shithole "town" no one has ever heard and no one would ever want to live in. Bravo.

Well, let's be honest: You're description sucked. It really made no sense. And if two people (of the 5-6 in this world reading this thread) were confused by your description, it pretty much tells me your description was poor. Bravo.

I'm sure I could have done a better job of giving pinpoint directions, but to be honest it just didn't mean that much to me. Have a nice day.

Ah yes, you don't care about anything. That's why you're constantly complaining.

Now he knows why I wanted to know how to pronounce "Rouche" and what it rhymed with.

Fuck me - I was just asking for clarity on the location. I've lived in Oregon my entire life and I'd never heard of it, so I was curious (and I've spent a fair amount of time in Medford, Ashland, and Grants Pass.

People are so touchy.

Yes but some of us are touchy in a good way.

As in when Mrs Hcp gets touchy with my penis.
