2011 Commits and Recruiting News

With French here it begs the question, that if we land Lyerla what position do we put each at.
I'd be stoked to have both as TEs who could line up outside as well as on the line mixing up looks and exploiting matchups. I'd also love to have both as DEs, or LBs, or (of course) having them play different positions. I'd imagine Kelly would love to have more of this sort of problem to work with

things may sort themselves out on their own. French hasn't played that much football as he grew up playing hoops. Further, his team ran the ball 90% of the time so he's not had much experience as a receiver. If he's going on offense as is the stated plan, he's probably sitting out a redshirt year. Maybe there it's discovered he has hands of stone and has to go to D? Or maybe one of the two is thought to have such good linebacker instincts that he has to play there? Hopefully we get to see this worked out

Re: 2011 Commits and Recruiting

You can basically add Tra Carson as a commit because of this quote Justin Hopkins on DT got from him.

http://oregon.247sports.com/Article/Carson-expects-to-be-a-Duck-8376
"My plan is still to commit on my visit at Oregon," he said. "I'm leaving on Friday and I'm just so excited to get up there and make this happen."

Just has to OV this weekend so he can commit. High school teammate of LaMichael James and absolute bowling ball of a running back. According to his facebook he made 1st team all-state and that's pretty legitimate in a state like Texas. As a senior had 2202 yards at 11.24 YPC and 24 TD's.

Personally, I'd rather have Carson who will compliment our speed backs than Bigelow who has had two knee surgeries.

The Ducks will be absolutely stacked at running back for the next few years especially if LaMichael James comes back.

LaMichael James
Kenjon Barner
Lache Seastrunk
Dontae Williams
Tra Carson
and mix in a little Huff in there as well.

Anyone know when Lyerla plans to announce. Man I hope we get him. Please don't be another Owamagbe Odighizuwa or Gabe King.

Or Charles Siddoway.

I think its important we get some homegrown talent as well.

Looks like we got Vaughn.

Our class has also shot up to #14 in the country on Rivals.

I think we're going to like Vaughn. I think we're REALLY going to like Vaughn.

He is one of three WR's that I thought could do awesome things at Oregon.

and it looks like McReynolds is visiting the week before. Big couple of weeks for some big kids!

he already did his OV and really liked what he saw but has been quoted saying that he's not so sure he can take the long rain filled winters. Thats why he's coming back in January to see what it's like. A certain UCLA coach reportedly told him it's utterly depressing in the NW in the winter, but dude is from DC...

I think Bigelow's film is definitely more eye popping to me, dude has shown elite speed. Hopefully for him his surgeries are successful and he still has it... pretty likely thats the reigning medical opinion or Cal and Oregon (among others) wouldn't be offering him.

It wouldn't be the first time I'm wrong, but Tra looks like a quality backup to the guys listed above to me. I'm glad he seems to be coming on board but just judging from the clips I've seen I'd rather have a healthy Dontae Williams in power/short yardage running situations as I prefer the sort of explosive bounce he has to the more lumbering style of Carson. Nothing wrong with a quality backup though and I'm stoked that they seem to be building a Texas RB tradition.

good read on some O-Line commits. 2 Already committed Ducks are mentioned.. and hopefully one will de-commit from Texas with the shakeups going on there

Best in space

What we look for: One of the big assets that sets the very best offensive linemen apart from the others is how they operate on the move. Whether it is pulling and trapping or leading upfield on level-two linebackers or level-three defensive backs, the big man who has body control and balance in wide-open spaces is indeed a special player. It takes a lineman with good foot agility, hand-eye coordination and overall athleticism to be an effective blocker in space.

Andre Yruretagoyena (Scottsdale, Ariz./ Chaparral)You think pronouncing his last name is difficult, try avoiding his wrath if you're an opposing defender. The Oregon commit needs to keep developing his frame, but he is one of the most physical and tenacious blockers in this class and defenders are not safe, no matter where they are on the field. He can be a dominant run-blocker in space, and his athleticism allows him to stay on his feet and at times crush defenders on the move. Yruretagoyena may be a little light, but don't underestimate his aggression or ability to hunt defenders down between the white lines.

Best upside

What we look for: Offensive linemen make huge strides as they mature. Sometimes it's a matter of gaining strength, improving foot quickness and agility or becoming more fundamentally sound in terms of technique. Young linemen are often better run-blockers than pass-protectors or the other way around. The important thing is that a player improves his weaknesses to be a complete offensive lineman. These are some of the guys we think can be exceptional linemen at the next level with some refinement.

Tyler Johnstone (Chandler, Ariz./ Hamilton)When the guy lined up on the other side of you is the nation's No. 1-ranked offensive tackle, it can be easy to get stuck in the shadows some, but Johnstone is someone to take notice of. He will need more time develop physically and as a player than his teammate, Westerman, but the Oregon commit displays the tools to have a bright future. He needs to add serious bulk to his frame but is an athletic prospect who posted some of the best test scores on the combine circuit this offseason for offensive linemen. He is an aggressive player who gives good effort. He reminds us some of another Arizona offensive line prospect from the 2009 class, Taylor Lewan, who is now starting at left tackle for Michigan.

The next is about the player currently a Texas Commit.

The Best Run Blockers-
What we look for: Good run-blockers must come off the ball with a flat back and deliver a solid first punch into the frame of the defensive lineman across from him. Fast hands and quick feet allow him to control the defender and get movement at the point of attack. Coaches want a lineman that can lock on to the opponent and maintain control until the whistle blows and a guy that will give great effort from the backside and seek out a defender to block downfield.

Christian Westerman (Chandler, Ariz./ Hamilton)
The No. 1 rated tackle is a big and well-put-together lineman who possesses an aggressive attitude and the ability to be a dominant run-blocker. He combines his size and strength with the ability to quickly get out of his stance and explode into defenders. He can maintain good pad level and leg drive to push defenders off the ball. He has an attitude in which he tries to finish blocks and will look for opportunities to make another block downfield. It is not all size and physicality with the Longhorns' commit, though, because he is an agile big man who can work up to the second level and block well in space.

read over on DT board that the Ducks get an in home with Moala in January. Wont get my hopes up but he would be a huge get

dude hasn't visited Oregon as far as I'm aware and has shown tepid Duck interest all along with Cal (his local school) being a clear leader. I'm actually more interested and optimistic about pretty much every other DT they're known to be going after.

as a side note, Mo Latu is rumored to have academic issues that may force him to go the JC route

the DT who's tape really impressed me is Simmons. He's extremely quick/athletic for a guy so big... he'd give Aliotti options on mixing things up (ie zone blitzes). Simmons + Shelton added to Ebert would work :)

It would especially be great to get both those guys given that Heimuli is said to be making his decision whether or not to go on his mission here soon. I hope he stays, but don't want to be selfish, and hope he's happy with whatever he chooses.

Lyerla kicked out of his Official Visit with UCLA???

Obviously I cant tell how true or what this is.

Colt Lyerla kicked out of UCLA...

....while on an official visit.

I heard that while he was on the visit, he started asking a bunch of questions and really challenged the coaches to give him answers. When they didn't, he started bad-mouthing them to a few of the other recuits on the visit.

Next thing you know, he's on a plane back to Oregon. LOL

Stomp, I'm hearing LMJ will play his last game in a Ducks uni on Jan 10th.

It appears prep 4* Ja'Juan Story is here in Eugene visiting Oregon. There have been rumors that Story is going to decommit from Florida since Urban Meyer is no longer there.

Guy is fast and big. Runs a reported 4.4 forty and is 6-3 190 pounds.

the quote I read from him earlier this year is that "NFL stands for not for long". I can't imagine dude's stock is going to get much higher as he'll always have the size/durability questions, so time to start cashing in on the limited snaps he has left. I'd venture a guess that he's a 2-3rd round pick and will be a 3rd down back/kick returner

hmmm... nothing on rivals about him visiting now or in the future, but there has been chatter about him for the last few weeks including that multiple Duck coaches have stopped by his school to visit. Story's HS coach stated that Oregon has been pursuing him the most aggressively of any school since Meyer stepped down at Florida. He'd obviously be a huge get

I found out about it here.

During the dead period? Is that normal?

sometimes yeah, if a kid has used all his Official Visits and all that. Bridgewater has been rumored to Louiville for a couple weeks though.

Some guy on DT is saying that Marqise Lee is a silent SC commit and is waiting to the UA game to announce. He says, that multiple sources close to Lee have confirmed this.

how many spots does USC really have left? They have zero depth on the OL... none and lots of great WRs. I'd almost welcome them getting Lee because it would leave them so thin in the trenches

Rumors that wallace might be visiting Arkansas even though he is a solid UO commit. His friend committed to Arkansas. No link.
