...#6

6. Portland Trail Blazers – Andre Drummond, C, Connecticut
The Blazers are looking to pair LaMarcus Aldridge with a big man to help take the pressure off of him on both ends. If Drummond is there at No. 6, Portland would get a player with the more upside than any other prospect besides Anthony Davis. Drummond is the prototype of what you want a center to look like physically and has freakish athleticism and agility for a player his size. His post game is a work in progress, but if the Blazers are patient with him it could be a home run. Drummond has as much upside as any center prospect since Dwight Howard, but does come with risk too.

......#11
11. Portland Trail Blazers – Dion Waiters, SG, Syracuse
According to sources, the Blazers prefer Lillard over Kendall Marshall, and should Lillard not fall to Portland the Blazers will look at wings. Waiters is an intriguing name, having been reportedly been given a promise while in Chicago, who will provide the Blazers with a slashing guard that can create for himself as well as set up teammates. Some experts believe Waiters can play some point or initiate the offense. It’s fair to say that Portland, with two lottery picks, will be willing to gamble on a prospect if they believe he has high upside.

Although Olshey said he is not against the practice of giving promises, he realizes the pitfalls. When he was an assistant general manager with the Clippers, his boss, Mike Dunleavy promised Russian forward Yaroslav Korolev the Clippers would take him at No.12. The problem was, a kid from New Mexico named Danny Granger was unexpectedly slipping out of the top 10. When it came time for the Clippers to pick at 12, Dunleavy honored his promise to Korolev, even though Olshey said they knew Granger was the better player. Granger was taken 17th by Indiana and became an All-Star. Korolev played 34 NBA games.

"I will say this: Very rarely does the promise work out in the best interests of the team," Olshey said. "What it does in my opinion is you are chasing the draft instead of letting the draft come to you. And it takes you out of that the world-comes-to-an-end scenario where a guy you didn't expect plummets. Like Brook Lopez slipping to 10. If New Jersey had promised somebody, what in the world do you do? Because in our business, your word is everything."

These writers....

When they ask the GM (or whomever) if they gave out any promises what do they expect?

"We did make a promise to a certain prospect, but lets keep that out of the newspaper, mmkay?"

Read Olshey's "denial" from that article:

(JQ)I asked Blazers general manager Neil Olshey about it, and I've never heard him laugh so hard.

(NO)I got the job on a Tuesday, and by the time I landed in Chicago the next day (for the predraft camp), I had convinced an owner (to pick a prospect), a player to shut down his workouts ... I mean, I hadn't even talked to my scouts yet.

Anybody see the word "no" in there?

He could have just said no, but some people still would not have believed him. I think by trying to be logical he was more effective.

Nah. Lillard may never be a "star", but I seriously doubt he is a Thabeet level disaster. At least there seem to be no questions about Lillards motivation/work ethic.

So he'll at least get to the Randy Foye/Johhny Flynn level.

Via Insider:

We mentioned earlier this week, that the Memphis Grizzlies aren't inclined to deal Gay, Luxury Tax issues aside. Kennedy added that the Oklahoma City Thunder are so secure with their core group of players that they are looking to trade away their No. 28 pick, which implies they won't be trading Harden.

Kennedy went on to list the Portland Trail Blazers (No. 6, No. 11) and Hornets (No. 10) as teams that are looking to trade for players who can impact their roster right now. The Milwaukee Bucks (No. 12), Philadelphia 76ers (No. 15), Boston Celtics (No. 21, No. 22) and Brooklyn Nets (No. 57) are trying to trade up. And the Houston Rockets (No. 14, No. 16) and Golden State Warriors (Nos. 7, 30, 45, 52) are simply aiming to trade away some of their excess draft picks.

There is a new dynamic in the NBA created by the punitive Luxury Tax (which discourages teams from going over the salary cap) and reasonable contracts for rookies (which makes them more enticing as trade assets). Stay tuned; there likely will be a number of first-round trades leading up to and during the draft.

I'd love to see the Blazers go into full re-build mode and get 3 first round draft choices. If Houston (14 & 16) and Golden State (30) are really trying to move their first round picks, I wonder what it would take. We don't have many assets to trade with.

Tony Wroten Admits Trouble Defending Retired Brandon Roy

NBA.com's fantastic Scott Howard-Cooper talked to Tony Wroten, the University of Washington guard who figures to land in the high teens or 20s in the 2012 NBA Draft. Wroten talked about working out with UW/Seattle area legend Brandon Roy, who retired last December at age 27 due to knee trouble.

Six months after being forced into retirement by a knee injury, Roy, Wroten said, "dominates. I'm a good defender, I feel like, but, man, it's a little hard to stop him. He just gets to his spots. We're going to see. His knee looks great, though."

This says one of two things about these two dudes:

1. Tony Wroten is not a good defender.

2. Brandon Roy is still Brandon Roy.

I'm going with No. 2. Come back No. 7! The league needs you now more than ever.*

Mike Rice has watched all the workouts........

"@GabruPunjabi23: @mikerice6 Would you be OK with taking Drummond at 6?" No way

Wroten can't play D or shoot?

How many guys, a year out of HS and not yet schooled by NBA coaches, are prepared to guard a crafty vet? Of course, last time we saw Roy on the court, he was pretty easy to guard.

More Rice.......

rice is crazy on were guys go in the draft. I can see us pass on Drummond, I don't agree but I can see it. Your either gonna get the steal of the draft or the bust of the draft with Drummond

He could have just said no, but some people still would not have believed him. I think by trying to be logical he was more effective.

I'm not looking for conspiracy theories, I'm just saying that there is nothing concrete in his answer, which leaves wiggle room ... hell, if he hadn't laughed before responding to JQ's question, we'd all be talking about how explicit he was and how he was able to be so persuasive in such a short amount of time.

It's pretty obvious who Rice likes in this draft:

-Robinson
-Kidd-Gilchrist
-Beal

Fez and Rice see eye to eye on this one.
Well I'll be dipped in shit and rolled in bread crumbs...Rice likes 3 of the Top 4 players in this draft!?!?!?!

Well Rice is an alcoholic, so I'm not sure I'd brag about that?

Mickey Mantle was an alcoholic and was one of the best sluggers of all-time. Just because you can't handle your booze doesn't mean everyone else can't.

Happy Fathers Day :)

I was just saying that at #6 if he had to choose from Lillard and Drummond he says NO WAY to the 7' footer! Which surprises me because they always say you can't teach size. In spite of this and him being a coach, he STILL wants Lillard. He watched both workouts and he is still that one sided after watching........ Drummond must really be Thabeet Part II!

Was Drummond really that bad in his workout?

Rice usually is never this adamant against a prospect.
