OR, the "rumors and speculation" is complete bullshit and they don't want to off load Asik until they are CERTAIN they will be getting Dwight.

I think that makes more sense then being confident, so you destroy your team without an agreement in place.

Exactly. I can see them telling us "okay you get asik for giving us this relief; but we want to make sure we get Howard to sign first"

I'm totally fine with that.

Adding to the speculation, saw on twitter that if Dwight goes to HOU, Josh Smith could end up there as well.

Thats $9 mil in salary for $5.5

Asik actually is on cap for $8.38 mil. The first year was 5 mil and the second 5 and a balloon of $15 mil on the last year. They average all three years and are on hook with cap for the average of all three

They already have cap space right now. We have them enough to offer max. Now he has to sign first.

So they'd be interested in taking on salary? Matthews and Leonard for Asik doesn't make sense for a team looking to shed contracts to sign bigger ones.

Aren't they far enough under the cap to sign him? I thought that was the point of trading TRob.

I can't think of a worse possible PF to play alongside Dwight than Josh Smith.

Really, really good friends if I recall correctly.

Personally, I'm a little skeptical, as I have no clue how that would even work. They'd need to clear an additional, 14 million at least unless they both took paycuts.

After the Howard acquisition; we the hell not? You gotta prove to Howard that he has a stacked team. Adding an additional 2 mil isn't a big deal.

We could help them by just giving us asik for nothing but a second rounder or Barton. They clear another $8 mil.

I think they move Asik after they sign Howard because they need to add some more pieces and Asik would be wasted as a backup. I think Matthews would be a great backup for Harden.

Why would Houston give us Asik for nothing? They could probably get a team to give up future assets that dont affect houstons salary cap situation this year for Asik.

ATL is prepared to S/T Smith for Asik if Howard goes to Houston.

We can't compete.

I was just giving an example. They could give asik away and have $9 mil free.

I still think Matthews and Leonard is a decent deal. Matthews can play sg/sf if they want a three guard lineup.

Remember Matthews is pretty money from tre.

Smith is a hell of a lot better than Matthews and Leonard; but can he fit? Smith's range is desperately suspect. Leonard can learn through Howard and Hakeem and be pretty damn good in a couple years.

lol what does his range have to do with anything? He's a PF.

Well, the thought would be that Howard will be camped out in the paint. Plus, you have to consider that Harden gets into the paint quite a bit as well. The key is going to be mighty crowded if it's Harden, Smith, and Dwight.

This makes sense. Perhaps part of Houston's pitch to Howard may be that Houston will bring in Howard's buddy Smith. Olshey knows this and knows we have no shot at Asik, so he's moving on to Plan B? :dunno:

And do what with Horford? Interesting.

That's another angle too. We could do a three team and get horford for Matthews and Leonard; Atlanta gets asik and a shit ton of cap space; Houston gets smith.

Atlanta could go into full blown tank mode. It's not like they have fans to be pissed about it anyway.

Where did you hear that?

Jason McLaed @InsiderJayNBA

Source tells me the Hawks are hoping Howard goes to Houston if its not them, plan on offering to s&t Smith for Asik or get Asik outright.
