How Will Smith Got A Standing Ovation During His Oscars Speech.

All I know is if The Rock had made that joke instead of Chris Rock, that slap never happens. Will Smith is a bully type.

Also, what if Amy Schumer had made that joke? Well, it was a funny joke, so I guess Amy Schumer would not have made that joke, but you get my point
He said he did what King Richard would do in protecting his.
I read where some black ladies now look at him as a wholesome man because he stood up for his women?
I think they are both decent people and this controversy is nothing like some that happen in that industry.

People talking about Chris Rock like he is a 'bully' for making an off hand joke when by all accounts he didn't know Jada had this condition. It's his job to tell jokes and like others have said, it wasn't even a good joke, just an off hand one and he even said it was a 'nice one.' It's Will Smith that is considerably bigger than Rock that came up and decided to be the bully. Agree 100% that if that had been THE Rock up there, there is no chance in hell Smith walks on that stage, instead he saw some one smaller in stature and decided he could get violent with him.

Also, whatever happened to "Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me"?

He assaulted someone….period

Speaking of punching, I want to punch every one of those soccer moms that hold their phones wrong when they record anything.

THIS ... SO MUCH THIS!!!! As someone that works in TV news, it's so annoying when someone sends us video shot holding their phone up and down, plus it looks horrible on air. I get it, dumb apps like TikTok make people think the phone should be vertical but almost every other video screen you watch this on will be horizontal.

Also, whatever happened to "Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me"?
This is one of the dumbest things in the world. Tell that to the kids that cry everytime a bully tells them they are less than. Or anyone going through something. Words can and do often hurt. Be kind.

I think most of us were bullied in some shape or form as kids, some got it worse than others. Luckily I grew up to have pretty thick skin and I understand others aren't as lucky. That said physical violence should only be used in extreme circumstances and Sunday night at the Oscars was NOT an extreme circumstance. Thank you though for ignoring the meat of my post and only sticking to the last line, I'll assume you agree that Smith was much more the 'bully' in this situation and knew he had the physical advantage on the much smaller Rock.

Not really. Don't make fun of someone elses medical condition, physical appearance, disability, race. It isn't that hard. If Rock wouldn't have done that he wouldn't have gotten smacked upside the head. Hopefully he won't do it again.

Of course you don't jump into a fist fight at the very beginning. But words can be considered violence too. It wasn't like he killed him. He absolutely could have put him in the hospital.

Some do get bullied worse than others. Why bully at all? I've seen kids with lifelong disabilities get ruthlessly tormented and left out. Any form of bullying is wrong, especially with children.

If ya'll want to make fun of peoples physical appearances, medical conditions, disabilities, race etc. By all means. Just don't be surprised if you get smacked upside the head.

You're the only one that equates this situation with bullying of kids, and no one that I've read has disagreed with you on the fact that kids shouldn't be bullied for their appearance, yet you continue to try and equate the two.

As for making fun of peoples appearance, that's what has been done at these award shows for years, it's part of the social contract they sign up for when they are the 'star' of the show. Seems like that has been changing for a while now, and I'm guessing this will be an accelerant to more of that change.

Do you not think kids watching adults making fun of anothers appearance has an influence on them?

Even without the kids, is it ok for an adult to make fun of another persons appearance? Would.it change things if Jada had cancer and not Alopecia? Would that mean more to you?

Leave the personal insults about someones appearance at the door. Or else risk getting smacked.

I would say that, this guy doesn't know what he is talking about. Implying that Chris Rock knew what was coming means that this whole thing was staged. There may be some people who believe that this event was staged. I wouldn't be among that group though.

When you have nonverbal learning disorder, like Chris Rock does. You can't read other people's intentions well.

Here is a link on NVLD.

https://www.churchillstl.org/learning-disability-resources/nonverbal-learning-disorder/

Early Signs of nonverbal learning disorder:

Often misses social cues such as facial expression or tone of voice, making it hard to make and keep friends1
Needs to verbalize things to understand them
Struggles with reading comprehension or mathematical problem solving
Physically clumsy, often bumps into objects or people
Thinks of things in literal terms and struggles with metaphors or abstract concepts

Yes I think a life threatening disease would mean more to most people than a non life threatening one. Again, this is an act that has been done long before any of us were here. It's been a part of the social contract that they sign up for with these big awards, they are going to make fun of you, and sometimes that means appearance, doesn't matter if I think it's right or wrong. Seems like this was a perfect storm, where it wasn't that funny a joke, it was made towards a person that seems to have zero sense of humor when it comes to herself and her husband has been drug through the emotional wringer by his wife and the media over the last year or so while also the stress of trying to win an award he's coveted for decades. Add in that Rock is a smaller man and that Smith felt like he could get away with being violent towards him and you get what we got. I'm not sure what of all that was right or wrong, that's for everyone to decide for themselves I guess.

A medical condition is a medical condition. Obviously cancer is a huge deal. But you have no idea how someone is handling their condition mentally. Health stuff sucks. I can't imagine what it would be as a woman losing their hair. "She must have zero sense of humor". How about, it is something she is really struggling with in regards to her self worth and it was a knife to that self conscious part?

Better to leave jokes about someones physical appearance alone.

Off the subject .... Kind of?
Your moniker picture speaks volumes.

Yes ... I think you've made it abundantly clear in here that you don't condone making fun of someone's physical appearance, got it and hope you live up to that standard every day of your life.

There he is...hope you'e doing better Lanny!

Yes. People say mean hurtful things. Sometimes out of ignorance for the problems people face.

I've seen adults go up to mothers and ask them if they drank and smoked weed when they were pregnant as if it meant that is why their child has a rare condition.

Will Smith is older now and this issue is a lot closer to him with his wife so perspective can change when issues affect those close to you. You become more knowledgeable on how certain words can devastate people.

Doesn't mean he shouldn't have been smacked when he was younger.

Advocating against violence against women while advocating that Will Smith should use violence against Chris Rock.

I am sorry. But you seem to be simultaneously advocating for, as well as, against violence.

Not advocating for it. I would prefer people don't make fun of others for their appearance. I would prefer adults and children would be more understanding to people with differences outside the norm.

But if you do make a comment on someones appearance, if you get smacked upside the head for it, hopefully that person learns to not go there again.

Look, it was a tasteless joke. It wasn't right. It wasn't right to get physical.

Nobody is hurt long term, and we all got to joke about it.

This is about the most pointless thing in the world to be angry about.

Except its not. Call out when people make jokes about someone elses appearance.

Jim Carey would have sued Will Smith for $200 million if it had been him Smith had smacked.

"I was sickened," the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 star remarked during the interview, which was recorded on March 28 but only recently made available online. "I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse. It really felt like: 'Oh, this is really a clear indication that we're not the cool club anymore."

Carrey also made it clear that he felt Smith should have faced more serious repercussions for striking Rock, including possible arrest. Academy sources told Peoplethat Smith's removal from the ceremony was "definitely discussed seriously" in the immediate aftermath of their encounter, while the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that Rock declined to press charges.

"He didn't want the hassle," Carrey speculated about why the comedian didn't pursue legal action. "I would have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video is going to be there forever. It's going to be ubiquitous. That insult is going to last a very long time."
