Game Thread 2023-24 Game #33 - BLAZERS @ MAVERICKS - JANUARY 3, 2024 - WEDNESDAY - 5:30 PM PST - ROOT

Mavs team salary only $1.7 million more than ours. What a waste of money on this team.

the Blazers were down 20 when got Reath tossed.
Down 30 when Walker had an injury.
But according to Coach Billups, the team was back to being shorthanded, which is why the Blazers weren't playing hard and let Mavericks blow right past them.

well, this kind of shit is what the people advocating for a Dame trade wanted

I didn't want Dame traded but if it happened I also wanted Nurkic traded (but not for twice as expensive Ayton); Ant traded (instead the Blazes are making him the poster boy for post-Dame era) and Grant traded or not re-signed (to be determined). I knew the team was going to be bad but I didn't think it was going to be this bad. Billups is a good tank commander

I'm thinking that the Blazers will never trade that 1st round pick to Chicago. Just 5 more years in the lottery (likely) and they get out from under Olshey's fucking idiocy

Geez, the rebuild is only 33 games in and people have already lost patience. It’s going to be a LOOONG journey but the right journey.

the rebuild actually started 25 months ago when Olshey was fired; definitely got going 23 months ago when CJ, Powell, RoCo (3 starters) and Nance were traded. It was a wishy-washy-half-assed 18 months of fence-straddling bullshit following that. But again, the rebuild started chugging down the road when the Blazers finally shit-canned a decade of Olshey idiocy

That’s your opinion. To me the rebuild started when they traded Dame. They were still trying to build a winning team around Dame.

I never envy billups for having to stand and respond to questions about why his team is getting housed. I don’t think there’s a version of this game where Portland wins given their personnel.

but.

This did feel like one of those baseball games where you sorta want to see the manager run out and performatively yell at the ump—if only to show his players that he has their back. That’s definitely what the fans were feeling (the ones who were still watching, anyway).

but that’s not Chauncey’s vibe, and so much of Chauncey’s focus (all of it) is around mentorship and development—and usually in these blowout losses Chauncey has taken the tack of ‘we need to be better’ vs ‘we got jobbed.’

that’s why it’s frustrating to see Chauncey so subdued during these games and after. maybe we don’t think Chauncey should be canned, but we wish he’d… you know… show a little fire. Part of Chauncey’s job as the coach is to take the heat after terrible losses like this one. I’m not sure he needs internetters to come to his defense. He’s not above completely above reproach here.

I think they were straddling fences, but they were at least 33-40% rebuilding. And in the meantime, their bets were flopping (nas, gp2, nurkic) and the partial rebuild left them zero room for error when guys started getting hurt.

job security must be nice. There's not a chance on Earth coach Billups gets canned. Jody would have to pay lotsa money to hire better coaches. That ain't never gonna happen.

When things look completely out of whack like these last 2 games, is it really Blazer fans faults for being grumpy after blowout losses? I missed the pregame show that discussed how certain players would show ZERO defensive effort, and portray the body language of guys that don't want to be in the game.

You seem to constantly say, that first round exit team was so much better than what we witnessing now. But sport is about winning Championship and playing happy shooting with no defense wasn't good enough for it. It was pathological team, that wasn't going nowhere and should end right after 4:0 with NewOrleans. No defense effort from leaders was affecting effort from rest of the team. I couldn't watch Stotts letting Dame, CJ and Melo play ISO with no effort in D.
Grant and Ant are the last kids of this ISO hero ball.
We will be good hopefully, but it is our first season without Dame and Grant shouldn't be our leader. Let it go:)

And started a new decade of Cronin idiocy...

the fanbase backing Chauncey and ownership backing Chauncey are two different things. after a bad loss, fans are going to look to the coach for answers. That’s why they get paid the big bucks.

of course that's my opinion; and what you write is your opinion. It rains in Oregon by the way

and, in my opinion, Olshey NEVER tried to build a contender around Dame and I have serious doubts Cronin ever really tried. Blazer management in the Dame era:

That's great. A message board with an abundance of opinions. Who would've thought???

I wouldn’t trade the 2018-19 season for anything. 53 wins, 3 seed, Game 82, Shot vs OKC, 4OT win, game 7 win on road. It came crashing down in Game 3 of WCF but it was still the most fun Blazers fans had since 2000 and probably one of the 10 best seasons ever for us. (Sadly, I know). So no, we shouldn’t have begun rebuild after the Pelicans sweep.
