Wow Hart opted in to his 13 mil deal.
Landscape is really changing with this new CBA. Josh Hart is super happy on the East Coast. But it definitely shows the money, potentially going to role players ,might be topping out.

Yet we have a Joe Cronin appreciation thread.

Go figure.

I'm just rolling my eyes at all those folks who said Hart would have never re-signed here. I was listening to Amick (or someone else I don't remember) a few days ago and he said Hart never asked to go to New York. His wife wanted to go to New York but above all they just wanted a place to settle and not have to worry about their future because Hart was on a 1-year deal. Said Hart just wanted to be wanted and would have been fine if an organization just committed to him long term.

My read was always that the Blazers FO never valued him at what his asking price would have been, which was ~18M AAV. At least not with Ant on the roster. They made a choice not go commit to him long term which is why he had to go, not because they had no chance of re-signing him.

Now he works with New York to opt into his 12.9M. Go figure. What a load of crap.

I can't remember who I was listening to, but they said it wasn't so much that he wanted to go New York, but that he wanted a solid deal so he could move his family out here. Not sure if that's true or not.

So much for our genius GM and cap guru foreseeing how the new CBA could impact FA dealings

Lol, Josh Hart or Kris Murray? I maintain that we could have kept Hart if we pushed hard enough to, and I think Hart impacts winning more than Simons.

It is what it is.
Yeah I prefer the 23 to Hart if we're rebuilding. But Hart is clearly much superior if we're trying to win now with Dame. I don't understand how people even debate this but welcome to RC2.

He wanted to know he was wanted, and to have a long term contract. Portland CHOSE not to be that team.

No they just want to believe we "never had a shot" because his wife wanted to be in New York.

Josh Hart sang praises about the organization and the FO while he was here and even after he left. You don't think he could have been convinced to stay if our FO made an effort to keep him? Bullshit.

The dude wasn't shooting here though. It was so weird.

Only thing? No. BIG thing? Yes. You discounting it is worse.

There were people in the know literally refuting that as the only driver. But sure, keep believing that if it will make you feel better!

He still get the bag, don't worry

Of course he will get it. 5/93 is roughly 18M AAV, which is what he's worth, and what we didn't think he was worth.

The 12.9M for next season sure helps them make other moves though.

If Hart stayed, would the Blazers tank? and if they don't tank, they don't get Scoot.

Scoot + KM or Hart + whoever was taken at the 9th pick?

Blazers could've easily tanked with Hart - they did it literally the year prior and got Sharpe.

These butterfly effect justifications of bad moves is ludicrous, I swear some people here would argue drafting Bowie over Jordan was good because otherwise we wouldn't have gone to the finals or gotten Sheed or something.

Our genius GM has done exactly what he needed to. He upgraded the talent for this team in a very short time. It's a shame that it is not likely to get Dame an opportunity to lose again in the 2nd round, but that's the game of chance.

Loved Hart as a role player, would have been great if the rest of the team was good enough to be a contending team. It was not so the right decision was made. Ship him to NYK, tank, get a chance on another all-world talent + nice role player in #23.

If the alternatives are see Dame going super-nova to tap out at the 2nd round or suck for a couple of years at a chance of building something special, you would have to be a special kind of genius to choose option 1.

Didn't you know? The Hart trade is why we got lottery luck. The universe had deemed it so.

About as ludicrous as anticipating what the new CBA would be.

Hart's wife wanted to be on the East Coast. Happy wife, happy life.

Misquoted - she was flying back and forth from east coast to PDX because Hart didn't have a long term commitment to stay here and setup a home. Hart just wanted a long term commitment so he could setup a permanent home. We chose instead to pay 2x-3x for non defenders like Ant and Grant.

2 play in teams made it to the conference finals.

Any cheap scrub players we can get to help Dame?

Yep.

I can understand if you don't think Josh Hart is worth 18M per year. I disagree, but I understand.

But don't hold on to the false narrative that he "never would have re-signed".

I get why people don't like Joe.

I have hated his trades and his free agent signings. But the guy convinced the team to tank two years in a row, and the fruits of that effort was Scoot and Sharpe.

I don't like saying "he lucked into it." I don't think that's fair. Tanking that hard relied on convincing our key players to sit out. I don't think Ant or Nurk do that if they didn't have assurances. I don't think Grant does that if he doesn't assurances.

The main issue is that Dame and some people feel lied to. Maybe he did lie. Regardless, it was a strategy to bring in more talent to the team, and that would not have been possible if Dame/Grant/etc had played out the season.

Part of it, for sure. It was easier to tank without him. That meant more ping-pong balls. It's really not that hard to do. You can't play the "You should have known he would opt in" game if you are not willing to acknowledge what happened because he was traded as well. They took a calculated risk, and they scored. Good for Portland.

He shot lights out in PDX the year prior. Yeah he had a three months bad shooting streak to start the season, even Dame has had those. He brought defense and rebounding unlike any other player or even starter on the Blazers roster.
