i've been beating this dead horse going on like 3 yrs now, but Cam Johnson has to be a target. he's a RFA, and we have history with the Nets and poison pill offers. But this guy's advanced metrics are so consistently high on both ends of the floor. he's not a great rebounder but he does everything else well, and I feel like he is ripe for an increase in usage.

really wish there was a way to get him. might even consider a S&T for Ant if nothing better comes up.

I might be wrong but..

say we somehow salary dump nurkics contract in a trade
Don’t extend any qualifying offers.

wouldn’t we have quite a bit of cap space?

couldn’t we sign someone then sign grant to go over the cap with his bird rights?

This is a target according to @hoopsjock.

Also I don't want to tie @hoopsjock name to this but he's saying based on the meeting there are conditions to Dame staying:

1.) Re-sign Jerami, apparently this is not a done deal because Jerami doesn't want to be here if Dame isn't.
2.) Get another "big" name. Doesn't necessarily have to be a star. 2 biggest names are Green and Cam Johnson.
3.) No more ducking the tax or making moves just to get out of tax. Stop being cheap.

Also said Cronin and FO went into the meeting with Dame trying to convince him to do it their way, ie. rebuild young is better than loading up on vets.

I dunno if any of this is true. If it is, I'd be frustrated as well as Dame.

Maybe in theory... but theres a lot of risk in that.

1) this FA class sucks. Have you looked at it? Not really the year to go FA hunting.
2) When has Portland ever been able to snag a premier FA

I could go on, but those 2 points should be sufficient to discourage your line of thinking

How many games does this team win?

Dame
Sharpe
Cam
Grant
Ayton

with Scoot, Matisse and a bunch of minimums off the bench?

Sounds good Jerami. Sign the contract & we'll ship you off in January. ;)

Cam will be at least 22M and will hardcap us. I haven’t run the numbers but it will be pretty rough.
dame -- 46
sharpe -- 6
cam -- 22
grant -- 30
ayton -- 32
scoot -- 10
thybulle -- 8

~154 mil for 7 players

that leaves about 10 mil for 5-6 more players before hitting the apron to fill with minimum deals. hardcapping might not be an issue.

Murray is another, what, 2.8? Same for Keon if not dealt.

Yeah it would have to be a sign and trade.

No cap space, we could probably use the full 12 million MLE. If Grants contract isn't huge or we dump NAS we might be able to use it with Nurk though.

Ah, my friend, I understand your frustration with the situation, but let's take a moment to appreciate the marvelous equine creatures we call horses. While the phrase "beating a dead horse" is often used metaphorically, it can be considered rude or insensitive. Horses are majestic beings, symbols of strength, beauty, and grace. They deserve our admiration and respect. Perhaps we can shift our focus from repetitive endeavors and explore new paths, allowing these incredible animals to inspire us with their elegance and unwavering spirit. Let's celebrate the wonders of horses rather than beating a tired old idiom.

Thanks for posting this. That was my queue to get back to work even though I just clocked in.

Not sure the likelihood of landing Draymond but there is a smoke out there. Hopefully Dame has him locked up. But we've seen this story before but Draymond is a different dude.

This is the only blazer related note in Fischer's free agency primer today:

The Kings and head coach Mike Brown stealing Draymond Green from the Warriors would be quite the story, while Portland and Detroit are also expected to make plays for Green, sources said. Although all indications continue to point to Green returning to the franchise he’s won four championships with.

If Dame wants Draymond, he needs to get on the phone and talk his friend into signing here. He has the influence.

We would also need to pay him more than he's actually worth. Like 3 yrs 100 or higher. And send Ant and/or Nurk + Nas to a third team.

Does a roster of Dame/Sharpe/Grant/Dray/Nurk even get to the playoffs?

Draymond wants a big contract. I cannot see how POR makes that happen.

Idk. The Blazers shouldn't pay him that much though. If they get him for a few years at or below 30, it allows Dame to have what he wants while we develop Scoot and Co. If it doesn't work, and Dame wants out we can still move on as we were.

Just a helpful hint. I think you might boost your credibility if you would stop mentioning Myers Leonard.

Haha might be true. For some reason I really like the idea of signing him as a vet minimum 13th man. I was one of if not his biggest hater for a decade so its a very strange feeling.

Agreed - if Draymond says he will not return to Golden State - and will sign with the Kings for cap space or the Blazers if the Warriors do a sign and trade it becomes very possible the Warriors consider a trade offer from us. They won't do it if Green is willing to resign with them.

Sign and trade is the only way.

Yeah I don't think he will accept the $12 million MLE. Not with Sacramento and other teams offering $100 million plus, just no way.

Draymond's agent is doing a nice job. Putting out smoke signals that the Warriors will be bidding against others, and that Draymond is considering leaving for another team. That will drive up his price nicely for the Warriors to eventually re-sign him.

Grants free agency will be key factor in direction franchise is headed. If he signs right away then he probably believes Dame is staying. If he signs somewhere else then he likely thinks Dame is leaving ( I think Blazers likely match any offer unless it’s ridiculous). At least that’s my theory

Is there any reason a sign and trade him would make sense for both Grant and Blazers?

Blazers have to pay as much as Sacramento or Golden State if not more. So yeah its probably $30+ million per year.

If its a 3 year deal I'm fine with it - next year salaries have to be close to matching, then following year yeah maybe something goes sideways and there is risk but if so we just wait a few months until the last year and its an expiring contract we can move to rebuild. Still would have a year before Scoot or other new rookies extensions kick in to add younger talent if we need to retool or rebuild at that time.

I do wonder if Cam Johnson would be a better target than Draymond though. Draymond has the name and history of higher performances. Cam might contribute more on the court going forward, is supposedly a friend of Dame he is high with, and has the chance to contribute with the later Scoot/Sharpe timeline.

Rich Paul is one of the best agents in the game whether most pople realize or not.
