As somebody who doesn't watch a lot of college hoops anymore.....why have I not seen his name in a single mock draft that high. I looked at like 20 that have been updated very recently. You think we should pick him in the TOP 5?

Draftexpress just moved Clingan to #3 and is now “firmly in the conversation of being the #1 pick.”

Why would Joe comment that the three Rookies are not your average NBA rooks but ready to win now, rooks? I thought he was a gm type that would hold his cards close to his chest especially when it comes to the scrutiny he will get. He must have really believed it or bought into someone else evaluation.

IMO, this narrative is complaining just for the sake of complaining. Maybe 1% of GMs or coaches or team presidents is going to come out and say the guys they are putting on the floor for significant minutes are three years away even when most people knew it. They're still trying to sell tickets and generate excitement. And no one thought Rupert was going to be ready to contribute this year; I know Cronin said they had him as lottery value, but I didn't think they said he was ready to win now.

It just gets old continuing to see people quote this as a criticism of Cronin. There are so many things he legitimately could be criticized over. But saying Scoot and Murray were plug and play is a sign of a bad GM? That's like tell me you just want to crush the guy without saying directly you want to crush the guy. It's a molehill.

geez louise....where did I say that because Scoot and Murray were plug and play made him a bad gm? I didn't. I simply said I thought he would be the type to hold his cards close to his chest. It's apparent they are more like most rookies that are talented enough to be drafted but still have to find their way, and see if their talents translate to the NBA.

Apologies.

The gist of my response wasn't meant to be directed entirely at you. It's more about the general idea that pervades this board and other social media that Cronin being positive about our draft immediately after our draft is some kind of indictment on him when every other organization is saying the same thing about its picks.

You just happened to touch on that narrative and it was an opportunity for me to sound off about the topic. What Cronin said is pretty much a nothingburger and should be approached as such unless other coaches and execs are saying different things about their young players or someone can prove Cronin actually believed something wildly out of line with scouts across the league.

TBF, I don't think many people expected Scoot to be this bad. I don't think anyone reasonable figured he's be much above average as a rookie, but he's not even close to average at this point.

Sad for the Blazers. Tanking for who? It’s the worst draft pick ever.

Yeah, that is a great link. Love their assessment of Cody Williams. We need more players to keep rising so we have a good shot for him. I love his game and think with another 10-15 lbs he will be a star.

Cody Williams is the guy that ideally should be put next to Sharpe. The 25/5/5 SG (that we hope Sharpe becomes) + All around two way SF = recipe for success, historically. See: MJ-Pippen, Kobe-Odom, Wade-Lebron, Brown-Tatum

Imo, a lot of people should stop reading/listening to whatever is popular and start reading draft reports for current star players first before making evaluations. That's one thing I try to do because I find archetypes are more important than certain arbitrary traits or stats that look good in college but don't always translate unless they're very exceptional. This is especially important if you think this draft is 'weak'.

The complaints leveled against Cody Williams are the ones leveled against Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler where they're described as being well-rounded in their skills but not elite. Quick but somewhat slow in their first steps and overall speed. Having some scoring capability in spite of that. Then, their ball handling is described as average-to-above average despite all three of them demonstrating a capability to change directions while having the ball in their hands (which Cody Williams does, as well). When they create their shots, they use their bodies to create separation and they're also able to move in a herky-jerky kind of way (whether spinning, twisting their bodies, switching ball in their hands, up and under, etc). Their athleticism is also questioned as they're not the best athletes (duh, if they were, they'd be Lebron or T-Mac). Their jumpshots and shooting percentages are good to very good but aren't elite which causes people to dismiss them.

I'm not promising that Cody Williams becomes the next Paul George but I do think it's quite likely that he reaches what De'Andre Hunter currently is at a faster rate than Hunter did (he also has better playmaking skills and is further ahead, as a player). Then, if he becomes more than that, that's simply the reward of investing in him.

I would pick Edey if he's available late 1st round. I think he'll be a rotational player in the league.

This is the only player this year worth drafting.

I hope the chatter keeps going about the Bigs going higher. About the Kentucky guards. Push someone down to the Warriors pick. Keep both and improve the talent level … take the shots … low cost … make the call.

As to going after players fitting the archetypes … cool.
One writer thinks about looking for “role malleability.” I’ve attached the link and cannot say how useful it actually is, but it got my attention. If you read it, please comment as I’ll assume my knowledge is limited.

Bronny James entering the draft. Blazers can take him in the 2nd round. Remember we love guards so it’s perfect.
