Was just listening to the latest Ryan Russillo podcast with Sam Vecenie as they break down the lottery. I literally stopped listening. They got to the 3rd pick and had no clue. They had no idea who the top 3 picks would be n an NBA Draft.
Sam was saying there is simply no future stars in this draft. None.
Usually he has about 4 or 5 a year.
Said next two years will be amazing. So that gives me some hope for our tank next season.
Huh - that sounds like a familiar take on things!

I mean it was like 15 minutes in and Sam bashed every single player that we’ve heard are growing early. Said GMs don’t want to waste these top picks in any of these players. Sorry, first draft in my life I simply don’t care about. These players we draft won’t play next season regardless. Glad RipCity has you guys staying pumped for it.
375 days until the draft I’m excited about!

When are all these trades supposed to pop? I’m gonna be very underwhelmed if we stand pat and are debating another Kris Murray at the end of next Thursday.

Other than Brogdon, trades likely depend on who they draft at 7, so I'd expect trades to happen after the draft unless they're dead set on selling a certain other veteran.

Hey - I'm not pumped about this draft at all - just giving you a hard time. I'm just hoping they don't trade any of our good vets on a draft pick this year.

Why not totally ignore the draft and don’t write 10 times a day that you don’t care? I think we are now really aware of what you think.

We should just give away our draft picks to the Warriors and Spurs. Thunder too if they need a couple.

Williams is really skinny and I don't love his shooting form but I think he could be the best scorer/defender of the bunch to pair with Scoot.

The thing about Cody Williams' size....when you measure out the weight to height ratio, it's no different than KD being 185 lbs, as a 6'11" player. If the knock on him is weight, it's a poor one since that is easily fixable, especially as he's already athletic and well conditioned and therefore, the bulk is less likely to interfere with endurance.

If his shooting never pans out, I do see him as a better Darius Miles. Athletic and fluid with ball handling, elite in transition and capable of attacking the rim. Higher IQ, better FT%, better mentality, better defensive effort, and better playmaking potential than Miles but maybe not escaping the 15-18ppg zone that Miles would've been in modern pacing.

Just about every single draft, there is an All-Star at the #7-14 position. Perhaps a better Darius Miles that can shoot could look like Paul George in a few years.

10 times a day. I post about this draft a few times a week at most homie.
Sidenote: because I don’t think this draft is full of top talent, I’m not allowed to share my opinion?
What about these cats who post 40 times a day how excited they are…. That’s ok?
Shit I’m just sharing what some NBA guys I respect are saying. My bad.

Hey, I get it. Everyone has their own opinions and ways of expressing them. But honestly, after seeing your posts a few times a week, we get your point. Also, it's not like there's a flood of people posting 40 times a day about how excited they are. At least I don’t see them

came here to say this. if there’s a mass of excited people about the draft I certainly haven’t seen them. this is the draft when you have a good chance at selecting shawn respert or nolan smith.

Hey, I'm all three posters on the internet and I don't even see them.

Right on, but are you serious? Do you see there are literally 25 threads currently that are nothing but the same people hyping up this shit show. And THAT’S ok? Just because I don’t agree with these people, I think that’s the problem. Sorry I’m not excited for what’s about to go down.

Do you propose we trade out of this draft? Pass on our selections?
This draft lacks an elite talent at the top. Everyone has admitted that, regardless of how you seem to think otherwise. That doesn't mean there won't be solid contributors, even if they are not our 1st, 2nd, or 3rd best player. And our hope as fans of a rebuilding team is to find the top players in a star deprived draft. Much like Milwaukee did with Giannis in a crap draft.
It's very, very unlikely anyone is anywhere near as good as him. But there are people that will be talented NBA players. Not a single person here has said someone is gonna come in and be a star and catapult us to the playoffs next year. That seems to be the strawman you keep creating and railing against, and what has people annoyed at you popping in every day to tell us about your contacts saying it is a bad draft. Cool. We heard you the first 45 times. Nobody gives a shit. We're making the most o a shit situation by talking about who we pick with our picks in the draft.

People talking about the biggest NBA story and the Blazers part in it does not = hyping.

You seem to have lost perspective, thinking that anyone talking about something this newsworthy is an abomination to you.

Like I said a couple of days ago, you've said your piece multiple times. If you don't think other fans should be able to talk about what they think their team should do on, you know, a message board about that team, then maybe you need to step away for a few days. Go to a political forum or something like that. But your POV on this has gone from ridiculous to fake news.

I’m ‘excited’ about the draft as always. And in the Blazers range — or well within trading up in this weaker draft where scuttlebutt has teams preferring proven players over picks — there are players who have skills/abilities and at positions of need who MAY pop.

Couple this with the possibility of trading veterans who are good players but (1) don’t fit the timeline when the Blazers return to the playoffs (Brogdon, Grant), (2) are better now but will get passed (Ant) and have weaknesses unlikely to change much for the better, and (3) have longer and/or larger contracts better used when the young ones mature. [a reset of team salary structure. All of this while said veterans would help other teams.

So, count me in on being excited for this draft even though the Blazers fell to 7. If trades happen to move up for players I’m in favor of, ironically, falling in the lottery may be a good thing. And, HCP, I do agree with your fundamental points. I go a different direction even acknowledging the reasonableness of that position and reminders.

Agreed. But, nobody will be willing to move a high frp next year unless it's for a bonafide star. Moving our vets for high picks this year is kind of like doing it next year in that the team will be set up to lose a lot of games without purposefully tanking, guaranteeing a high frp next year when there's so much more talent. It also frees up some cap space for enticing free agents to sign if these young guys show some promise of being contenders someday.
Plus, there are always guys who way over perform their perceived potential at the draft. Otherwise, Kobe, Giannis, etc would have been drafted first.
If the talent evaluators were as good as they think, there'd be no reason for "re-draft" columns. It's just a matter of guys like Schmitz having the evaluation of a lifetime to get that one-in-a-million talent later in the draft.

I am "excited" for this draft, not because we will get a couple rookies that take us to the promise land soon, I'm excited because in a week there will be a couple new guys on the team that I love. Stars, scrubs, inspirational stories, college disappointments, projects, total mistakes. Whatever! Because, whenever you add some new faces, there's always new hope.

This gave me a chuckle. Cody Williams isn't near the athlete as Darius Miles.

yesterday, i heard 1080 radio using Portland's draft numbers to sneak in a Warriors Dynasty comp:
Steph #7
Klay #11
Green #35
....
those fellers have multiple lines in the water to keep sports fans biting.

I think we'll learn a lot about the direction of the team after we see who they draft. I believe that last season, Cronin thought they could go with just a re-tool, not a rebuild. But he found out that even when Grant, Brogdon and Simons were healthy, we still weren't very good. Maybe Billups helped talk him into trying the re-tool.
I don't Cronin think is a stupid guy; he can see they need to add more and he knows that next year is a lot better draft. So my guess is that he will go for maximum upside with all his picks and will keep all four to give him the best chance of hitting the jackpot. If they really like a guy, I think they will trade up to get him, but will try to use veterans to do that, not draft picks.

I have a hunch that Billups does not really want to go this route and has told Cronin this. I think it's possible that Cronin told Billups that if he wanted to put out feelers for a job with a more established lineup, that was OK. This might explain the situation with letting some coaches go and not replacing them. I think it's possible Cronin would not have been too unhappy if Billups had found another job.

Is there any evidence that my thoughts have validity or are they just projections of what I wish would happen? :)
