Well from the last episode he wanted them to kill him to protect his country. Kinda weird how he managed to live like that for 20 months.

If you have seen the prequel to season 6 on the season 5 DVD it explains why he is still alive. And the Chinese guy did say he was much to valuable to kill.

And Jack explains why he stayed alive during the torture (why he didn't just give up on life kinda thing).

on a side note I didn't know Kal Penn was in this series (Kumar on Harold and Kumar goto White Castle).
