Junior Darron Thomas looked sharp as one could be with the limitations set on the defense Thursday hitting his receivers time and time again and showing good command of the offense.
“It’s a different spring for him,” said Kelly on Thomas’ sharp practice. “Last season he was fighting for a starting job. Now he’s working to take on the leadership role. I think he looked sharp. I think he’s got a better command of what we are doing and I think that comes from having 13 starts.”
The running game again looked impressive as they could be considering the circumstances but on Thursday it was junior Kenjon Barner who showed up and walked away as the most impressive back between the returning backs.
Multiple times Barner would break off long runs into the secondary that would force the defensive backs to converge on him 20,30, and 40-yards down field.
Both LaMichael James and Lache Seasstrunk also had nifty runs down field and it is safe to say the Ducks have viable options at running back between the three returning scholarship backs.
One interesting comment from Kelly afterwards was the use of early enrollee Colt Lyerla.
“He’s kind of that h-back spot that we have,” said Kelly on where Lyerla will line up at. "Eventually as we get him going he will end up playing a little running back. With David Paulson moving all over, with Ed Dickson moving all over. The good thing with spring is we get to move him around.”
Today Lyerla worked more with the receivers and on Tuesday he worked with the tight ends. He also worked Thursday with the special teams unit which could be an early indication the Ducks might try to see if he’s willing to play right away.
“I am a big believer of throwing them [young players] into the deep end of the pool and seeing what happens,” said Kelly when asked about impact of the younger players so far in camp.
