4. Chinese interest: There's probably never been such interest in the playoff race for the Chinese Basketball Association. Yesterday, the Zhejiang Chouzhou Golden Bulls lost a game and were eliminated from playoff contention, which means former Nuggets guard J.R. Smith will be free to return to the NBA when the regular season ends Feb. 15, Sportando reports.
Smith, an explosive scorer and athlete, is an unrestricted free agent. The Knicks, Clippers and Timberwolves are among the teams that are rumored to be interested in him.
Meanwhile, several other NBA players will have to wait to return from China. The teams of Wilson Chandler and Aaron Brooks have made the Chinese playoffs, which means they could be tied up for a few more weeks. Also, both players are restricted free agents, making their return to the NBA complicated. The deadline for restricted free agents to sign offer sheets is March 1, and the Chinese playoffs go past that.
Collective bargaining agreement expert Larry Coon explains on Hoopsworld.com that Brooks and Chandler are stuck in complicated scenarios that depend on when their Chinese teams complete play.
Several people have asked if it would be possible for Brooks -- the former University of Oregon star -- to end up with the Blazers. According to Coon, one of three things has to happen:
1. If Brooks' Guangdong team is ousted from the playoffs before March 1, he could sign an offer sheet with Portland, although Phoenix would have the right to match.
2. Guangdong could release Brooks before March 1, then he would need a FIBA waiver, after which, the Blazers could then sign him to an offer sheet.
3. If Guangdong finishes after March 1, Phoenix would have to renounce its rights to Brooks for the Blazers (or any other team) to sign him.
