OT ACAB All Cops Are Bastards (yes EVERY one)

Trump was elected

Antifa came and protested and yes sometimes with violence...mostly just breaking shit and starting newspaper bins on fire and clashing with police.

Cops kept killing black people. George Floyd was the final straw. BLM came to protest, mostly peacefully. Cops ran them out nightly even though they weren't being violent.

Antifa joined with the BLM protestors and yes some of the ANTIFAS started more fires etc. Most violent clashes we have seen have been Antifa vs Right Wingers.

Right wingers came because BLM was protesting to "counterprotest". They came to intimidate BLM because BLM is a threat to their way of life. They brought more violence.

No shit, but this was actually a problem last year with the fires. Fucking proud boys were listening to the police scanner (because some are cops) and hearing about BLM land fires and started telling everybody in clackamas county that the fucking Black Lives Matter was starting all of the fires... so people (including some in my family, ugh) were refusing to evacuate so they could "protect their property from" (ie. get an opportunity to shoot) the "fucking BLM who are starting the land fires"...

Dumbasses

I have to know more about the context before I can make a thoughtful comment.

I'm speaking about in general. As a father of a black child, when does this amazing boy change from bright, generous spirit to threat?

Him? I've met him and there's no doubt in my mind that he could never become threat. I want him as my next door neighbor. Good kid.

I'm fine with military becoming police officers as long as they pass a thorough psychological examination and qualify otherwise.

And I'm fine with needing more education to be a police officer, but you'll have to up the pay to make it worth it.

Or make it a paid education.
I was very disheartened when they dropped the requirement for a four year degree from the requirements to become a Portland police officer.

I believe there was a short period of time during, I think during Moose, when PPD required a degree.
I believe the last time they required a four year degree was before Moose, some time in the 70s.

Portland has struggled for at least several years to hire qualified officers. Apparently few people are interested in being Portland cops (go figure). Supposedly they have not had a full complement in years (and is why so many cops make so much in overtime). So the City does the counterintuitive (and demonstrably stupid) thing and lowers the standards to that they can attract a higher number of “qualified” candidates. And so we get what we have…..and they STILL can’t get enough people to apply. I suspect it’s only going to get worse……..used to be that the aspiring cops who couldn’t qualify for the Portland police “settled” for going to work for Clackamas County (with the inevitable results). Anymore, Clackamas County is actually starting to attract higher qualified candidates than Portland.

I was recently talking to two old grade school buddies (now retired) who were Portland cops. And of course Portland’s situation came up. Listening to those guys, it is mind bending just how far the requirements have fallen in 50 years. Those guys had to volunteer for Explorer Scouts in HS and put in a great deal of time volunteering with local law enforcement. They had to have 4 year degrees, with Master’s Degrees highly encouraged. They are very unhappy with the lower standards. Both these individuals agree that until City Management gets serious (and stands up to the police union) it’s virtually certain to get get worse before it gets better. But both guys also agree, that if they had the choice of being cops today (anywhere) they would very likely choose another profession…….

Need to up the pay for police officers with degrees and who can pass a high level psych exam, and have spotless records. Bonus, additional $50k per year for those willing to work outside the current Union. I have no problem at all paying great peace officers with the proper motives $150k+ per year.

Basically, (if you accept this position) you're going to be a part of the Elite Peace Force ushering in a new age of community building. The focus is not catching criminals or getting convictions but preventing situations which encourage criminal/predatory behavior. You are also policing our current police force.

Pay extremely well and offer superb retirement for the best candidates to meet very high standards.

Puts them on the fast track.

I have no issue with a 4-year degree not being a qualification so long as there is an experience requirement to off set that. I know a few Portland police officers and morale is in the toilet with the current city council. It's an anti-police mentality and getting worse. Very few want to work as a police officer in a city where you get no support. And it's no wonder.

That said, we need to re-think the ways police deal with people in general. Gresham seems to have a good community policing model and a website where they drum up support.

Gresham police shot an escaped calf 75 times when it got out of my parents enclosure. They chased it through fields with their vehicles and generally terrified it for about an hour first.

Then encircled it and opened fire. It was shot in the ass 8 times. Called it a "rampaging beast".

This was 20 years ago... But I don't have good vibes for Gresham police.

Let it go, dude, let it go. It's too long to have a beef with them.

All that for a cow? Not like it was a bear or cougar or something. Jeez

I'll pour out a drink later to the fallen calf

Gresham has some of the worst crime in the metro area.

YOu are being part of the problem. If you can't say this country has had it in for black people since BEFORE it's inception...
I missed this one. But just saw it, so I'll reply.

When did I imply anything of the sort? Black people have been an exploitable population since before the country's inception. Of course they've been exploited. And they were the first, so there are larger numbers and the division is more entrenched, hence there has been more exploitation. This is obvious and I acknowledge that.

But that's the point. This system was founded on and encourages the elite to exploit populations as much as possible, and survives by playing those populations against one another.

If you think that is limited to one population and continue attacking another then you are also a part of the problem. It includes (to varying degrees) every minority and disadvantaged population.

Division is what allows the system to propagate.

I'm advocating for virtually the same changes you are, yet you keep attacking me as though I'm opposed to you. This is the definition of counterproductive.

Sure, other populations have had their problems here in the good old USA but none have had it nearly as bad as the Blacks. In every list of people other people would want as a neighbor Blacks are at the bottom of the list. This won't change over night but by God, it has to change. Who can bear such a position on such a list and not be affected in a bad way? I say give them some latitude or at least recognize the no. 1 problem we have in this country, race relations. If you've ever been discriminated against for some reason then you should be able to have some inkling of what it's like to be a full time Black. Try to put yourself in their shoes.
This is why I, along with several of my neighbors in Lake Oswego, have had Black Lives Matter prominently displayed in our front yards. I've had two but one was broken in a wind storm and the other was broken when a tree limb fell on it during an ice storm. God dammit, I'd get a third if I knew where to get it. I'd go to rallies if I could walk and so I content myself with places like this and how I vote.

Yeah, I completely agree with all of this. I do go to rallies on occasion.

I will also vote for people who support changes which will end this and prevent it from happening to anybody in the future.

I'll also let somebody I see hurting that cause know that I think they are hurting that cause. And if they are aggressive and/or dismissive to me I might be aggressive and/or dismissive back.
