According to Quick's article, Batum grew an inch this summer and is now 6'9"

Seriously, how accurate can a measurement eyeballed through some blinds be?

If the Blazer adhere to those principles, McMillan said, the team won't have to worry about its offense.

"If we play defense like I want us to, you don't have to run plays" because of fast-break opportunities, McMillan said. "If we are getting stops, or coming up with steals, we shouldn't have to run any plays."

So just to get this straight. Our coach who has never pushed the ball in his 10 years on the job is saying that we aren't practicing offense because of the fast break? So I guess it's either a defensive stop....which didn't happen a ton last year, or an ISO?

maybe he can grow another 2 or 3 inches quickly, we may need another C soon

My favorite parts:

Batum, a noted perimeter defender, said he can already tell the Blazers are better on defense. For starters, he said Miller and Roy are playing noticeably better defense.

"And it's hard to score in practice, trust me," Batum said.

When the Blazers do run their offense this preseason, McMillan figures to toy with some options. One experiment will be sometimes initiating the offense through Batum, who has grown an inch and is now 6-foot-9. Batum gained experience in initiating offense this summer playing for France, and said McMillan is already tinkering with some plays to put the ball in his hands.

Both of these are things I have been hoping for.

Maybe Nic stole it from Wes..... cause Matthews is now 6'3"!!

It makes sense; men (maybe women too; I don't know) grow an extra inch or two between the ages of 19 and 22 as a final growth spurt. I forget sometimes how incredibly young Batum is compared to the rest of the core (remember, he was starting for the Blazers as a rookie at 19!).

In before STOMP chimes in on his favorite topic :)

ha! I read this thread and just started shaking my head... the boy who cries wolf! (JQ) is at it again and some of the townspeople are running up the hill.

Bumping around the internet I've researched what is normal for growth, and contrary to what BlazerCaravan speculated, a vast majority of men are done by the age of 18. The few who do grow post 18 usually don't grow much. Of course there are outliers to most statistical patterns and Nicolas might have grown another inch at the age of 21 (hell, he might grow more), but that would be unusual... certainly more unusual then Quick relaying that yet another Blazer has gone on a late growth spurt. This seems to happen every fall... my guess is it's Elliott Williams turn in a year

it would be nice to get a recent real measurement on Nic as I can't take Quick at face value on much of anything he relays. The only real measurement on Batum that I'm aware of is from the Nike Hoops Summit in 2007 when Nic was 18. That measurement has him at 6'7.75 in shoes or about 6'6.5 barefoot with a 7'0.75 wingspan.

I'd encourage anyone who is interested in this to see what they can dig up and relay what they find :)

Anecdotally, my brothers and I were all done growing before our 16th birthdays. We're all over 6'3" too, so it was kind of a let down that none of us hit the 6'8"+ projections we were given in early childhood.

I was 5'2 when I turned 17 but could palm a basketball and had size 11 feet. In the span of maybe 5 months, I sprouted up to 5'10 which is where I stopped

if accurate... kind of a sobering reminder of just how young he is lol

I did the majority of my growing by my 15th birthday (5'11" at 14); I grew another two inches in college (6'1"); all the evidence I need to know it can happen. :D

So, I should have added a qualifier: it *can* happen, and does happen, but apparently my doctor was talking out of his ass when he said it was "normal". :D

Anyone know his predraft measurements?

I don't think he was in a predraft combine.

Thanks. One more inch or so, and he'd legitimately be able to guard 1-5.

Everyone always hopes for growth, but it rarely happens. The best example is always David Robinson. Entered the Navy as a 6'9" forward, exited as a 7'1" center. They really didn't expect much out of him when he entered the Navy.

I know this is an outlier, but an uncle of mine was 5'11" when he left for college at age 18. He grew a little his first and third years, but his second year when he was 20 he grew 8 inches and ended up 6'10" by the end of college. Just a side note, his mother was 5'5" and father was only 5'8". Crazy things happen.

As far as me, I was always tiny growing up, and the doctor said I would be between 4'8" and 5'2" max. I ended up 5'9" but all that growing was in high-school, and never grew in college.

If Batum has grown an inch and has developed some ability to initiate the team's offense...that would be very exciting. We'll see.

I want him to be tall and long enough to shut down Durant every time we play, like he did with Nowitzki last year in the closing minutes. Last year he still looked a bit short compared to Durant, who may well be 6-11 in shoes now (6-10.25 at predraft).

More than the Dirk shutdown, I liked his Kome shutdown.

I remember back in the day Mike Doleac grew a foot in like 9 months! Couldn't get on the court with us then all of a sudden he could never leave!
