OT Adam Silver Says It's Up to the Rest of the NBA to Catch Up to the Warriors

Nearly all NBA owners could afford to pay the luxury tax 10 times over, year in and year out.

It was invented simply as smoke and mirrors to keep from paying players their fair share of the profits.

Any owner that refuses to pay for quality players regardless of the cap (Paul Allen) is cheating his fans and will never win a title.

Golden State drafted Curry, Thompson, and Green without top 3 picks. They should be rewarded for that. If any other team were to do the same thing, an elite player would probably want to play there.

Kudos to GS. Teams should draft and trade better, cry less.

How is it his responsibility? The league wanted to smooth the cap rise after getting all the TV money. The players association did not agree - and GSW had the good luck of having a relatively low payroll for their big 3 and having the cap jump so they could sign Durant. The only way this is Silver's fault is if you consider going and getting the massive TV money a mistake. There is not 1 person in the NBA that will support this position.

As Wojnarowski points out, the Warriors didn't even need the cap spike. They could still have cleared enough cap space without it, by sacrificing Andre Iguodala. So the cap spike didn't net them Durant--it netted them Andre Iguodala. Which is still nice for them, but not quite as dramatic.

The Warriors basically planned well, drafted well and got a nice piece of luck in taking a risk on Curry's ankles and having it pay off in a comically underpaid superstar. None of this is the fault of the league--either the commissioner or the players' union.

iggy is more than defense and length though, he's a tremendous passer and a pretty good shooter&slasher. I mean this guy on most other teams is their #3.

As a player no, but as a coach then most likely yes. My guess is he still has to win a couple more as a coach before he's a slam dunk first ballot HOF'er. It's sad so many good players or coaches in all sports that don't get a sniff of the HOF till they get the jewelry.

He should have offered an automatic raise for all players. The cap goes up by 50%? a player who earns 10M a year now earns 15M a year for the rest of his contract.
Players association won't agree? then you have to risk a lock out. Because most players are under contract they would have eventually agreed to the terms because it's logical and they get their money before waiting for their contract to end.

Rules are critical for this league to work, they either mean something or they don't. You can't just say it will be "ok" to have anarchy for one or two offseasons, how can anyone agree with that notion is beyond me.

In addition, Adam Silver believes that GS style of basketball is the epitome of basketball which is a huge problem.
Post play is being eliminated while endless three point shots are being encouraged. You can't touch players on the perimeter, yet uncalled illegal screens and no whistles for contact in the paint have become a norm.

Is it ok that the league itself supports a specific team's style of play?

Warriors won't be able to maintain it. Curry and Durant are going to want to get paid. Thompson regardless of his I want to be a warrior for life speech will want to get paid. Green will want to get paid. The Warriors won't be able to afford to keep everyone together. Even if they can afford to keep everyone above signed they will have to recycle everyone else for a new bench. Can you imagine that core with a new supporting cast every season. Who wants to sign vet mins to go for a trophy this year. Fucking this league up.

Yeah they would still kick everyone's ass for awhile, but other teams and players would be forced to do the same to compete, and you would see alot of the greedy decision making dissipate out of the league. Maybe. And Portland could even land a free agent sometime in the near future. Maybe.

The LT is painful, even for a $billionaire. I don't see many that would pay $100M+/season in just LT penalties for very long. That Russian dude who owned the Nets didn't sustain that kind of tax bill for very long.

$100M is real money. $100M to a $billionaire means he has to liquidate assets, likely. It's not the kind of money lying around in a checking account somewhere.

Plus, paying that $100M gets split up among your competitors.

Aside from the money, the CBA inflicts harsh penalties that hinder roster construction for "repeat" taxpayers.

Almost every owner is willing to pay over the actual cap, just not over the LT threshold.
