I wonder if this is monitored?

Is Mavs' Benching of Dirk in Clutch Time a Tanking Move?

They should just send the fans a bunch of roses that smell like farts. I wouldn't pay money to go to games like that.

They dont want to fix it. Its literally the easiest fix the NBA has to solve right now. Not sure why they dont do it, other than they are idiots.
Any “fix” would trigger a re-negotiation of the CBA since it’s about labor rights. It’s not at all an easy fix.

What about after the All Star break, the bottom 6-8 teams then fight for the #1 pick by having to win the most games from that point forward.

sometimes teams are just legitimately bad. That format would punish bad teams because of other teams tanking.

to me, the simplest fix would be that no team could be eligible for the top-4 of the draft that was in the top-4 in either of the two previous seasons

so last season, assuming the Spurs and 76ers are in the playoffs, Dallas and Charlotte are out of the lottery and just get slotted by record. From 2024, Atlanta and Washington are eliminated and get slotted by record from 11-14. That would mean that if the season ended today (assuming no play-in team advances), the lottery would look like this:

1st seed - Sacramento
2nd seed - Indiana
3rd seed - New Orleans (Washington ineligible)
4th seed - Brooklyn
5th seed Utah
6th seed - Memphis (Dallas ineligible)
7th seed - Milwaukee
8th seed - Chicago
9th seed - LAC (Charlotte ineligible)
10th seed - Portland (Atlanta ineligible)
11th slot - Washington
12th slot - Dallas
13th slot - Charlotte
14th slot - Atlanta

you could even restrict it to 3 seasons instead of 2, but that would knock the Blazers out of the 2026 lottery

Like a cage fight? Like Thunderdome? Or do you just mean the team which wins more games gets a better pick?

Some countries have a relegation type format for professional basketball. Japan operates under this format. Most players from the NBA which don’t make it in the NBA, or un-drafted players which go to play overseas don’t go to Japan though. Spain, France, Germany, Turkey. The Australian NBL has a good amount of once NBA players in it as well.

It’s not common to see a relegation format in basketball, and it realistically wouldn’t make much financial sense from the NBA standpoint.

Why would Atlanta and Washington get slotted by record from 11-14?
Seems like it should be the teams from the previous years' lottery (not 2 seasons ago) that should be penalized that badly.

I have the solution. It is better than any other solution I’ve heard.

1) There is an end of season bonus for every coach and every player in the league except for those in the bottom three teams. This will give incentive for players and coaches to win every game. A 27th best team vs the 28th best team is a big game in April that both teams want to win.

2) The three worst teams in the league are not in the lottery and they receive the 28th, 29th, and 30th pick in the draft. This encourages the front office to put together a team good enough to escape that fate.

This is the ONLY solution that works.

You’re welcome.

Tanking would merely start earlier and encourage more losing to get into that bottom 6-8. Bad plan.

A: sure he did.
B: so you're to blame.
Yes, he did. I wrote to him the first year of the play-in because the app standings just had a line under the 8th place team. I suggest the line be under 7th and 10th. He said thanks and it was changed.

With the league expansion, expand the lottery to 16 spots, but from now on, only exclude the two finals teams from the lottery, and remove record-based weighting. Runner-up gets 18th pick and Champion gets 17th pick. No point in tanking in the Conference Finals in front of everyone when the commish is in person for every game for only a 10% chance at a top 3 spot when you'll at worst get 18th pick if you make the finals.

It’s so pathetic that every answer to NBA problems- they don’t try in an all star game, they won’t try in a mid season tournament, tanking, all star weekend events - is “we have to pay them (more)”. Makes being a fan of this league even harder. So soft. Low character.
