The NBA already buying into Scoot being a star.

Not to be a wet blanket, but I would very much like it if we put a bit of a damper on all this excitement about Scoot. Don't get me wrong, I think he will be a very good player for us, perhaps even great.

Let's just remember, he is going to be a rookie, regardless of his two years in the G-League. He has holes in his game. He will be scouted and forced to those weak points. The defense will be more physical and more talented. The travel grind will be harder. The attention will be more intense. He will have the weight of the franchise on his shoulders. Bottom line, he is going to struggle. And that will be okay.

I just want to make sure that when he does struggle, we show why we've been known as great fans. Support him, have some understanding. The morons in the media will blow him up to tear him down. I want him to know that we're patient and we're excited about what he can be, not what he is today.
IMHO, summer is the time for uninhibited optimism. Don't worry, reality is coming in the Fall.

Question: do you think Scoot can get 19 pts, 6.5 ast, 3.1 reb on 43% shooting in his rookie year? If not, then before he’s 23?

And therein lies the problem; the emphasis on individual statistics.

To me it is not about the individual numbers but about gelling and improving as a team.

Under Dame he had great stats but often we didn’t seem to function well as a team. Granted, we lacked talent but it also became a stand-on-the-fringe-and-see-what-Dame-will-do offense.

We saw it with Nurk that when he wasn’t involved in the offense his defense suffered. Likely the same with others, just not so pronounced.

My yardstick is not the individual stats, it is how we function and improve as a team.

I expect us to be pretty bad to start the year but also expect improvement throughout the year; opposite to the last two years when we have started ok but gotten worse.

This is when I’d most love to have Josh Hart back, not because he is great but because he sets a tone of how you give all on both ends of the court.

That seems reasonable that he can replicate Rookie Dame stats if he can get 30+ mpg. Posted this earlier...

I think maybe fewer points but more assists. He's also a good rebounder. I could see maybe 18 ppg, 8 assists, 4 rebounds? Our forwards aren't good rebounders so I could see Scoot getting 4-5 boards. I really think he's going to have some nice assist games next season because he's going to have Grant and Shae and Simons.

The question that jumps into my mind though, is what would Dame's numbers have looked like if he was the #1 option from day one?

I love this attitude

O’Connor: If he’s not back, you’re thrown right in the driver’s seat.

Scoot: Exactly. And I’m with that. If he leaves, I’m going to just embrace that. I’m going to embrace being the point guard for the team. And that comes with practice. I don’t have my spot guaranteed; I know that. My goal is to get better every day at practice and get better game by game.

Wow! NBA execs are bullish on Scoot! From a Chris Mannix article:
  • Speaking of Portland, Scoot Henderson played just 21 minutes in the Blazers’ Summer League opener, but opinions of him among the NBA decision-makers that I talked with are sky high. In talking to execs about Henderson/Brandon Miller—two players whose careers will be forever intertwined—a couple of team officials wondered whether San Antonio would regret passing on Henderson down the line. High praise considering who the Spurs walked away with.

8 assists? as a 19 year old rookie?

other rookies:

Doncic 6.0
Morant 7.3
Trae 8.1
Haliburton 5.3 (wasn't a full-time starter, 7.4 in his 2nd season)
Jrue 3.8 (didn't hit the 8 assist plateau till his 4th season when 22)
Westbrook 5.3
CP3 7.8
Curry 5.9
Conley 4.9
LaMelo 6.1

Blazers won't have a lot of shot-makers either. If Scoot hits the 7 assist threshold it will be quite an accomplishment

I think it's possible. He is a willing passer and he's very good at finding the open man.

Luka is basically a taller Dame.
