I'm sorry but cops can't have it both ways. They can't expect us to love and respect them when they're revenuing whores for the government.

Cops aren't serving the public. They haven't for a long time. They serve the city, and the government. There's a distinct difference. That's fine. If that's how they want to play it, they can have their ridiculous tickets and fines, but the effect of that is a populace that hates them. They see cops as the enemy. They see cops as the bad guys and they're afraid of them. They're scared when cops around. That's just how it is when cops are constantly looking for the smallest reason to bust us. Cops should recognize when someone is not a bad person and cut them some slack. Let them off with warnings. Tell them to be safer. Instead they're constantly looking for something that will generate revenue for their department. Enter red light cameras and speed cameras.

So when someone like Kaep lashes out at the police, they don't get to act indignant. They don't get to pretend like they're the good guys. Sorry, but the police are not the fire department, or the EMTs, or the military. Those organizations aren't actively trying to fuck over the American populace. When you call for an ambulance, there isn't a chance that the paramedics will show up and kill you. When you call the fire department, they don't show up and attack you with axes. There is only one organization in this country that is a potential threat, and it's law enforcement.

Exactly. I have two tickets to my name and both occurred when I was going to school in Corvallis. The first was a cop pulling me over for a "loose seat belt". I had the seat belt on, but it was on too loosely, apparently. The ticket was 30 dollars more than a ticket for wearing no seat belt at all. So, because mine was loose, but on it was a more expensive ticket. I should have just not worn it.

My second ticket was on the way home. My head gasket blew out in my vehicle and I was just pulling up to my house. I got home. The cop gave me a 200 dollar ticket for visible emissions. Fuck that shit.

Wow man... I have never heard of a "loose seat belt" ticket. I would have been furious.

An Open Letter to Colin Kaepernick,

Dear Colin guess you have been pretty busy these last few days. For the record I don’t think any more or less of you for not standing for the National Anthem. Honestly, I never thought that much about you, or any professional athlete for that matter, to begin with. I’ve read your statement a few times and want you to know I am one of the reasons you are protesting. You see I am a retired police officer that had the misfortune of having to shoot and kill a 19-year-old African American male. And just like you said, I was the recipient of about $3,000 a month while on leave which was a good thing because I had to support a wife and three children under 7-years-old for about 2 months with that money. Things were pretty tight because I couldn’t work part time. Every police officer I’ve ever known has worked part-time to help make ends meet.

You know Colin the more I think about it the more we seem to have in common. I really pushed myself in rehab to get back on the street, kind of like you do to get back on the field. You probably have had a broken bone or two and some muscle strains and deep bruising that needed a lot of work. I just had to bounce back from a gunshot wound to the chest and thigh. Good thing we both get paid when we are too banged up to “play”, huh? We both also know what it’s like to get blindsided. You by a 280- pound defensive end, ouch! Me, by a couple of rounds fired from a gun about 2 feet away, into my chest and thigh. We also both make our living wearing uniforms, right? You have probably ruined a jersey or two on the field of play. I still have my blood stained shirt that my partner and paramedics literally ripped off my back that cold night in January. Fortunately, like you I was given a new one. Speaking of paramedics aren’t you glad the second we get hurt trainers and doctors are standing by waiting to rush onto the field to scoop us up. I’m thankful they get to you in seconds. It only took them about 10 minutes to get to me. By the grace of God, the artery in my thigh didn’t rupture or else 10 minutes would have been about 9 minutes too late. We also have both experienced the hate and disgust others have just because of those uniforms we wear. I sure am glad for your sake that the folks who wear my uniform are on hand to escort you and those folks that wear your uniform into stadiums in places like Seattle!

I guess that’s where the similarities end Colin. You entertain for a living, I and almost 800,000 others across this country serve and protect. Are there some bad apples within my profession? Absolutely and they need to be identified and fired or arrested! But you know what, the vast majority do the right thing, the right way, for the right reason. Did I mention that seconds before I was shot, an elderly African American gentleman walking down the sidewalk, turned to my partner and I as we rode past and said, “Get them.” Get who you ask? The thugs terrorizing an otherwise good and decent neighborhood, home to dozens of good, decent African American families trying to raise those families in communities not protected by gates and security guards. No these folks and families depend on America’s Law Enforcement Officers.

Colin I have buried 7 friends, killed in the line of duty and three others who have committed suicide. I have attended more funerals than I care to remember of neighboring departments who have lost officers in the line of duty, during my career. Law Enforcement Officers with different backgrounds, upbringings, and experiences united by their willingness to answer the call to protect and serve their fellow citizens.

Colin I am sorry for the endorsement deals you may lose and the dip in jersey sales, but please know you will NEVER lose what these men and women and their families have lost. And so whether you stand or sit during the National Anthem means very little to me. As for me and the men and women on whose team I was privileged to serve, we will put on our ballistic vests, badge, and gun, kiss our loved one’s goodbye, for some tragically for the last time, and out into a shift of uncertainty we will go. We will continue to protect and continue to serve and we will be standing at attention Colin, not just for the playing of our National Anthem, but far more importantly for the playing of taps.

Was in "Just Sports" at Clackamas Town Center this weekend; sales person was chatting with me and pointed out the Kaepernick jersey on their wall--the only thing in the store marked down 50%. He said that was per a company-wide decree from corporate.

At the same time, Darren Rovell reported that the Niners sold more Kaepernick jerseys in the past week than in the prior 8 months combined.

Yup. Those Kaep jerseys will hang proudly in the closet of non-football fans alongside their Michael Sam jersey and their Jason Collins jersey.

People aren't also buying them to burn them? :dunno: An idiot set one of his flip flops on fire attempting to burn a brand new jersey with the tag still on.

Probably

Might as well just burn the money instead.

So I thought Stephen A was gonna rage about Kaep not starting?

Ben Fields not being charged is why Kaepernick protests

Watch the video...

True question: is there a statement somewhere that I've missed where Kaepernick says that this specific incident is the reason he's protesting, or is this just an example of incidents that he's T'd off about?

I've seen the video and I'm not about to make apologies for the officer. No matter what the provocation was, it should have been handled without the violence. That said, read this CBS report on the story as to why charges weren't brought.

It's interesting that the prosecutor says that the fact that the police chief fired the officer before the investigation was complete, and that the Justice Department cut a deal to drop its investigation in exchange for additional training being provided served to work against the officer being indicted. I think he's saying that the fact that the police department chose to handle discipline by firing Fields rather than arresting him, and the fact that the Justice Dept. resolution implies that the officer may not have been adequately trained works against being able to prosecute him. When combined with witness statements that it wasn't as bad as it looked in the video and that Fields didn't intentionally throw her, but lost his grip, there likely wasn't a reasonable chance that the officer would have been convicted.

I get why Kaepernick is pissed about so many incidents having happened in past few years where blacks are shot or injured at the hands of police and no charges are ever brought. But the underlying principles of justice cut both ways for civilians and cops. Just because it looks like an incident like this is blatant racism doesn't mean that it was. And just because there's video doesn't mean that there's sufficient evidence to successfully prosecute a case. Does that mean that there's something inherently wrong with our system of justice or does it mean that we're right and want to make damned sure that we only convict when there's proof of a crime beyond a reasonable doubt? I respect Kaep's right to protest and throw a spotlight on perceived injustice, but I think that he's missing the mark if he's relying on this specific case to illustrate that injustice.

Why LOL? If he gave money to some bullshit symbolism-over-substance "charity," then he deserves criticism, not credit.

You mean charities like Susan G Komen? Goodwill? Wounded Warrior Project?

Seriously, what does it matter? You want to control when this man stands? Wears? And now gives his money to? As long as they are legal charities it doesn't really matter.

If he's to be given credit for donating to a charity, it should be a legitimate charity. It's a valid point to raise, which is why I didn't understand your "lol."

Which charities he decides to donate to are his prerogative. Giving credit for his donations only if those charities are credible is his prerogative.

Well said. Another person who can wait to see both sides of a story before rushing to judgment.

You're being serious? He's going to risk jail and tax evasion chargers by the IRS to give money to fake charities? You actually think he's doing this?

I said "bullshit" charities, not "fake" charities. There are tons of charities that are shady at best. Tons of charities that spend more money on administration than they do on the causes they claim to represent. And there are charities that raise money for bullshit causes. All I'm saying (and what I believe MM was saying) is that the credibility of his chosen charity factors into whether he deserves credit.
