I just don't get why that matters unless the "flux" starts to affect the operation of the team. If Jody isn't concerned about taking on salary while trying to sell then that indicates to me that it's not a big deal.
You dont understand why an athlete wouldnt want to go to a place that doesnt have stable ownership? If Jody made it clear she was going to keep it sure. If its up in the air and agents dont have any idea what direction the franchise is going in I think they would be a little relunctant to have their clients come here.

Dont know but the least they could do is make it clear she’s gonna keep the team, gotta imagine the ownership in flux doesnt make portland more desireable.

Last I remember reading is that she doesn't want to sell in the foreseeable future. I guess we will know when that time ends.

Ive read several different reports but nothing even close to a qoute from someone that really matters, nothing from Jody, or Vulcan. So until then I think its all kind of guessing.

we just don't know whether she cares or not, but obviously, Paul cared enough about the tax to approve the Vonleh trade. There may be acceptance that the 2016 spending spree was ill-advised and will result in a year or two of tax. She may not agree to increase that tax bill though. The results of the two recent trades is just about tax neutral

the rubber will meet the road this summer, then we'll likely know more

Oh, I don't think that matters one bit. It would be different if it was like the Raiders right now not knowing where the team was gonna play next year but unlike some of the fear mongering going on I don't think the NBA would allow a new owner to move the team so I think that would factor in very little to a decision of a free agent.

Yeah, in our initial comments we prefaced it by saying "if Olshey was telling the truth" about Jody willing to take on astronomical salary. Of course if she wasn't willing to do so it changes everything.

I think it would make a huge difference you dont know if a new owner is going to come in and run it like Sterling (just a business doesnt care about winning), or like Paul from 15-20 years ago. Say you’re a mid level Starter on most teams trying to win a championship, are you going to go to the team where you dont know if winning is a priority or not?

Yeah, because we get so many free agents to come here since Paul Allen wanted to win? I'm sorry but that hasn't mattered for us in free agency for 30 years since Allen bought the team. It's not going to matter now. We have to overpay for free agents. In those cases players are taking the money. They don't really care about the direction of the team.

No, I honestly don't think our ownership situation has any bearing on whether a player would want to come here. The contracts are guaranteed. And the level of player we would go after is the type of player who won't have a ton of options. Even if we had max money to offer to someone, their decision to sign here (or not) would not hinge upon ownership.

Going from an 0-4 sweep to winning a series would be a step in the right direction and would give the fan base some actual hope. Logic says that would influence what path Jody chooses for the team, but she is such a blank slate it is tough to predict. She could see it as a reason to keep the team and invest in it, or it might inspire her to sell high (and not put any more of her own money into the franchise).

The only thing that Jody probably cares about (with all the Billions she is now worth) is that Paul bought the Blazers for 70 million and it is now worth 1.6 billion. I doubt she really cares how many playoff games we win this year, because it does not effect the bottom line.

And that would be a serious problem.

my guess, because I'm cynical about the GM, is that sure, she was willing to take on "astronomical salary", but what he didn't say is that he would have been sending out even more astronomical salary. Taking on 35M in salary sounds like some clue, but if Portland is sending out 41M that isn't Jody Allen agreeing to more tax

as many have noted, with Portland only 1-6M below the tax line when the off-season starts (barring some trade around the draft), we'll get an immediate tell on what JA is willing to ante if Layman gets an MLE level offer. And, as many have said, her willingness to spend may pivot on what Portland does in the playoffs. If Portland loses badly in the 1st round again, I'd expect major changes and no willingness to pay tax

And that would be a serious problem.

I don't follow. Why would that be a problem? She seems to be staying out of the way because she knows the value of the teams just keeps going up.
She is worth about 20 billion. She is not strapped for cash.

Almost 23x return in 30 years. That is insane! By comparison, the stock market is up about 12.5 times in the same span.

If the owner only cares about the bottom line and is OK with mediocrity, that attitude will poison the entire organization. Winning teams aren't run by the bean counters.

Once again assuming that Olshey is telling the truth (the basis of this whole conversation), then Jody said she would pay if it made the team better. Until that changes it is a good thing not a problem.

This is why I think Jody might keep the team. I think it’s value will continue to appreciate more favorably than the market in general.

Plus she will have a hell of a capital gains tax to pay when she sells.

a CPA can chime in cause I could have this wrong, but I think she'll pay estate taxes when she takes full ownership and then will be able to establish a new basis. In other words, if the Blazers are appraised at 1.6B and that's the basis for the estate tax, then that same 1.6B would be the new basis for future capital gains tax

Not sure if this has been talked about but do you think there could be a sense of “Win one for the Gipper” for Paul Allen. Maybe they are going to try and go all in and win it in Paul Allen’s memory in the next couple years. He was so passionate about the Blazers it seems like an NBA championship is that one thing he could never do. Take this core, throw everything you can at it and see if you can win it in the next couple years.

That sounds correct. Of course she’ll be paying a tax on the increased value of the franchise regardless though.

Yes....but I'm guessing there are trusts and other estate tools involved to help alleviate some of that.

I was thinking the same. I would think that Jody would want to honor Paul by allowing the organization to do what is best to win while she still owns it.
A Blake Griffin trade in my mind would have been a questionable investment, but if she was ok with that then she would be ok with anything. Even if Neil was BSing us on that one, I still don't think she will want to keep the team from getting better.

Well that is kind of my problem with the Hood acquisition without a followup move. If Hood turns out to have the same value as the other guys you mentioned then it means he played well the rest of this season which all but eliminates us from keeping him. If he doesn't play well we could probably keep him but would we even want to if he wasn't an answer to any of our problems? It's one of those situations where I don't see a way where it ends with Hood being a major part of our team next year.

Amen, we don't want those bean counters running the team!

I think that is a possibility and Bert Koldie is very much involved and the conduit for that to happen for Paul. Just my gut feeling...

with Jake and Meyers coming into thier own, Aminu playing above his contract still, Hood on board and another rotational big on the bench, are we going to go into the offseason with more leverage to make a consolidation trade to bring in the missing pc?

I know its one game for Mt. Rodney Hood (thanks for the ref. @Fonzthecpt1 ), but he passed the eye test with flying colors and has the experience in the league to be able to maintain that type of play.

I am glad we didnt do a consolidation trade at the deadline because it gives is time to evaluate the two newcomers to ensure thier fit before we clean up the bench.

Aside from some other teams looking to become the next dynasty, i think NO might have this timed out about right for gsw to start splintering just as we are ready to make a move for that missing pc. I see the offseason and the next trade deadline being the make or break move that will dictate our path for the next five years.

So some of you trade gurus out there, who do you see being a target next year to be that missing pc of our puzzle and what is the move or moves to get him here?

Do we sign and trade Aminu?

Do we attach a first to turner and harkless?

Ive looked around and dont see alot of options for a legit third start that would fit in without giving up our keepers( dame, cj, nurk, jake, hood, curry)

I say curry is a keeper because as of right now, most everyone wants turner gone and if he goes, we need seth for backup pg.

So... am i way off base on thinking the timing might actually work out pretty good, or am i an even bigger homer than in years past?

We are fourth right now in the most competetive western conference we have ever seen. One more right move might be all it takes to put us in true contender category.
Good Post. The future is bright.

What asshat made this asset thread????
Let me attempt to make the same mistake you did. Are we finally stacking up some assets? We just acquired DJJ, a 23 year old wing who is one of the best athletes in the game, has a motor that doesn't stop and has a shot that could be made serviceable. We got RoCo who is one of the premiere 3 and D forwards in the game. We got Enes at the 5 who helped us get to the WCF two seasons ago. We picked up Giles who has great potential if he can manage to stay healthy.

We brought back Melo who seems to be committed to taking whatever role gets this team wins. We think Zach will be healthy before long, which is great news. We re-signed Hoodie who by all accounts is ready to play and looks great for a guy coming off of an Achilles. Most importantly Nurk looks healthy and from the videos I've seen, in the best shape he's ever been in. We also have intriguing young prospects in Ant and Nas. Not to mention Dame (who is at least a top 10 player in the league but likely the 6th best player in the NBA). We finally have CJ who is one of the better ball handlers in the league, may have the most ways of getting buckets of any little man in the game and is one of the top three spot up shooters over the past 5 seasons. That's a lot of assets.
