amed Mexican-American labor leader Cesar Chavez died more than 20 years ago, but an Arizona ballot is gathering attention because a struggling 35-year-old congressional candidate has adopted his name.
After losing multiple bids for public office as a Republican candidate in Arizona, Scott Fistler has decided to turn his campaign, and name, into something completely different – filing to run as a Democrat, now legally named “Cesar Chavez.”
The Arizona Republic reports that Fistler lost as a Republican candidate for a 2012 write-in campaign against U.S. Rep. Ed Pastor, and then lost a 2013 bid for a Phoenix city council seat against Laura Pastor. He turned his sights to this year’s election to replace Pastor, who is retiring.
And that’s when the “mystery candidate” decided to change the game – and his name.
Following a petition with the Arizona Superior Court last November, Fistler paid $319 and legally changed his name to the late labor movement icon, Cesar Chavez.
“I have no idea who that is,” an opponent campaign spokesman said when Chavez first surfaced. No one in Pastor’s camp knew, either, the Arizona Republic reports.
But the real Chavez candidate, an unemployed military veteran who has entered the six-way District 7 race, concedes that using his newfound, popular name is a game-changer.
