Arizona: U.S. Congresswomen, 12 others shot, at least 4 dead

Can we agree that it's lame no matter who uses it?

I don't. I think that making those states a target is entirely legitimate.

The use of a target or a crosshairs seems fine as far as identifying that concept in a graphical form, and I don't feel any differently just because some nutjob shot some people.

^^^ Let's do away with the term "battleground state" as well.

Sheesh.

There's nothing wrong with the rhetoric. Each side targets vulnerable seats. I don't see the big deal in the DNC's graphic or Palin's.

This is offensive, though, right?

Yes. That is, just as a lot of the caricatures during the health debate "rallies" that the Tea Party did.

Our nation is not exactly filled with the most creative (or intelligent) group of debaters.

That's suppose to be Palin.

Re-read what I said. I said Yes, it is...JUST AS a lot of the .....

As in, this one is just as stupid and deplorable, just as the ones done by the Tea-partiers/whatever are too.

Hanging a public figure in effigy is nothing new, and it is free speech.

Most of what Palin and the teabaggers use to deliver messages in the media comes straight from Hitler's playbook. It's obvious purpose is to inflame the masses to a frenzy, counting on the likelyhood that the ignorant and the mentally unstable will take it to extremes causing mayhem and misery without getting their hands dirty.

It's cowardly, dishonest, treasonous, and highly effective. And it paints a very clear picture of their character, or lack thereof.

Hitler's "playbook" was to use the Brownshirts to intimidate through violence, assassinate their competition and ensure their voice was the only one heard. Their message was to bring up how incompetent the current government was, and how it shouldn't be allowed to continue that way. But he was speaking from his "playbook" for 10 years with everyone thinking he was a nutjob until one part of his message was proved right (the gov WAS incompetent) and his intimidation plan had gotten rid of anyone calling out his crazy ideas (genocide, rebuilding through conquest, etc.)

Honestly, I don't care about Olbermann's ranting or Anderson Cooper finding "Christian" nutjobs who don't live out Christianity or Hannity blathering about the godless communist hordes...I care about people being forced to do things they don't want to do and censorship of people calling it out. Last I checked, it wasn't the Limbaugh/Beck/Hannity types trying to reimpose Fairness Doctrine or make people buy health insurance. :dunno:

Maybe the Tea Partiers are also mad because many "pundits" refer to them as "tea baggers", who are people who enjoy having male scrotums placed on their head/mouth/eyes/etc.

that's really besides the point. This is a case of the guy being a fucking nutjob, nothing more. American media really sickens me. The Pima County sheriff is a piece of shit, spending his time fighting with Rush Limbaugh instead of pursuing the case.

male scrotums? What other kinds are there?

I don’t think Palin or the Tea Party is directly responsible for inspiring this massacre in Arizona. But there’s a reason she scrubbed her website, deleted tweets, and had surrogates argue that those weren’t targets on her map, but “surveyor’s marks.” That she has to insult us with these lies is telling. It’s not that she feels guilty–it’s that she’s so self-absorbed she thinks she’s a victim here for being called to answer for her rhetoric.

There’s a certain amount of war rhetoric that goes into campaigning. I’m not in favor of being overly sensitive about these things to the point where you can’t use a colorful metaphor. But we saw a health care reform debate and then an election where people were openly carrying guns, talking about watering the tree of liberty with blood and using “second amendment remedies” for Senators. A sheriff steps over the dead bodies in his town to mention these things might be inappropriate and he’s the one being blasted for making inappropriate comments.

And that’s where we are at. You can’t talk about the issues underneath this without being accused of “politicizing” it. The shooter is crazy and incoherent enough that we can all comfortably write him off as a “lone nut,” America’s favorite term to absolve us from looking at any of the societal problems that causes this type of behavior–or, god forbid, the tools he used to kill so many so fast. Unless the shooter fits into the binary mold of a mainstream liberal or conservative, we are content to pretend his behavior took place in a vacuum. “A lone nut! you’ll get those.”

And we will. See you back here next massacre.

Too many of your points in this thread seem to be based on your emotional response.

Go ahead and elaborate. How does using this event as an example in trying to address a wider social issue do... whatever it is that you're suggesting it does? Make a media controlling dictatorship? Plan our thinking? Is the loony left trying to control your mind maaaaaan?

Or are you just copy-pasting whatever Road to Serfdom scan you think vaguely applies to the argument at hand?

They are not related to the wider social issues. The relationship was formed without even examining the shooter. Just the simple fact that the person intended to be shot happened to vote a certain way, people (i.e. the County Sheriff) are blaming right wing commentators, the tea party and Sarah Palin. The end game here is that those in that camp passing the blame are looking to silence those whose ideals they do not agree with.

I just think its a waste of time to blame the "tea party" or "partisan rhetoric" here. That vehicle is being used to just make more of the political attacks and stratification which those on the left are complaining about in the first place.

I think it is reasonable to look at the context here. Yes, this dude is crazy. However, the way he chose to express his craziness is not random. He didn't kill his mom, or John Lennon, or his schoolmates, or a prostitute, or you (a random stranger). He chose to kill a politician. Why?

Sure, because he's crazy, obviously. But why a politician? Seems pretty obvious from his videos that he thought the gummint was oppressing him. How did he get the idea that the gummint was oppressing him?

Gee, how? I think people lied to him. Not with the goal of having him shoot Giffords, of course. But when you broadcast lies, you can't control who hears them and how they are going to act.

He wasn't actually being oppressed by the government. But that was an easy thing for him to believe in, since there were so many people telling him lies about how evil the government is.

Here's a thought...you're both right.

The gun rhetoric is a bit much. The gun rhetoric didn't cause this incident.

Doesn't mean it shouldn't change.

Here's a thought...gun control laws!

Gun control is a firm grip.

I believe Occam's Razor applies here. It's more likely he committed this act because he's fucked in the head than being pushed by the "climate of hate" created by any political group.

Also, I have to chuckle a little bit when I compare the reaction from the talking heads in regards to this shooting vs. the Fort Hood massacre. With the former, regardless of the evidence that this kid was described as a "left-wing pothead", they're racing to assign blame to a Sarah Palin graphic. With the latter, when the shooter kept yelling "Allahu Akbar", we were told to withhold judgment and not jump to conclusions.

Hilarious.

I thought about that, too. It's crazy.

Its pretty clear that the culture of hate is coming from the left. They are super quick to label, make fun of and mock the tea party and pass blame off rather quickly.

I agree. God, I hate the left so much. Violently hate those inhuman violent liberals.
