OKC are fascinating because really anything can happen with that team. It could be 100% turnover in two seasons or they could build around their young guys and whatever high pick they wind up with this season. Giddey looks like a great player but he doesn't shoot all that well and SGA does everything Giddey does, but for 5x the cost.

OKC is now a junior training ground for players & coaches. Draft them one and done, develop them for a few years, then they take off when possible.

I didn't follow the trail of all the lesser players they traded for, then traded away for 2nd round picks and/or TPE's. I also didn't follow the trail of what OKC got for the TPE's they landed in trades and then subsequently moved

as of right now, all of their wheeling-dealing has yielded SGA, Tre Mann, and Pokusevski. They also became a major member of the tank brigade by trading away talent and getting high lottery picks. So far, that has yielded Giddey and Bazely (Bazely came with a 2nd in a draft day trade of Brandon Clarke)

but mainly, all that talent was mortgaged for future draft picks. Near as I can tell, between now and 2027 (6 drafts), OKC has 18 first round picks and 2 swap options (includes their own 1st's). And between now and 2028, they have 16 2nd round picks (their own included):

2022 first round draft pick from Detroit
Detroit's 1st round pick to Oklahoma City (via Houston) protected for selections 1-16 in 2022, 1-18 in 2023, 1-18 in 2024, 1-13 in 2025, 1-11 in 2026 and 1-9 in 2027; if Detroit has not conveyed a 1st round pick to Oklahoma City by 2027, then Detroit will instead convey its 2027 2nd round pick to Oklahoma City [Detroit-Houston, 11/24/2020; Houston-Oklahoma City, 7/30/2021]

2022 first round draft pick from L.A. Clippers
L.A. Clippers' 2022 1st round pick to Oklahoma City [L.A. Clippers-Oklahoma City, 7/10/2019]

2022 first round draft pick from Phoenix
Phoenix's 1st round pick to Oklahoma City protected for selections 1-12 in 2022, 1-10 in 2023 and 1-8 in 2024 and unprotected in 2025 [Oklahoma City-Phoenix, 11/16/2020]

2023 first round draft pick from Denver
Denver's 1st round pick to Oklahoma City protected for selections 1-14 in 2023, 1-14 in 2024 and 1-14 in 2025; if Denver has not conveyed a 1st round pick to Oklahoma City by 2025, then Denver will instead convey its 2025 2nd round pick and 2026 2nd round pick to Oklahoma City [Denver-Milwaukee-New Orleans-Oklahoma City, 11/23/2020]

Oklahoma City will receive the more favorable of Dallas' 2023 2nd round pick and Miami's 2023 2nd round pick (Oklahoma City may convey this pick to New York (see Oklahoma City Outgoing)); Boston will receive the more favorable of (i) Houston's 2023 2nd round pick protected for selections 31-32 and (ii) the less favorable of the Dallas pick and the Miami pick and Indiana will receive the least favorable of the three (via Miami to Dallas; via Memphis' right to swap Dallas or Miami for Houston); if the Houston pick falls within its protected range, then Houston's obligation to Boston will be extinguished and Boston will instead receive the less favorable of the Dallas pick and the Miami pick and Indiana will instead receive the Houston pick [Dallas-Miami, 7/7/2017; Dallas-Memphis, 7/8/2019; Houston-Memphis, 2/6/2020; Boston-Memphis-Portland, 11/20/2020; Dallas-Detroit-Oklahoma City, 11/27/2020; Brooklyn-Cleveland-Houston-Indiana, 1/16/2021]; Boston may convey this pick to San Antonio (see Boston Outgoing)

Wow, thank you for that. Should sticky this somewhere...I don't know where.

So what I see is this is when the attendance drops massively because they're tanking and a Seattle businessman scoops the team back up and proposes a $1 Billion arena that is funded by tax money, is rejected, and then moves the team back to Seattle with all those draft picks?

I guess that's possible. I mean, how many times have the NFL Raiders moved in the last 50 years?

I forgot to add the links for those transactions I mentioned. If you want to track a particular trade or transaction, this is a great site:

and RealGM does a great job of tracking where future picks are headed:

wut? I was talking about what OKC got for Durant/Harden/Wstebrook/Ibaka. Thunder got nothing when Durant signed with GS
I got confused. I think Bogut might’ve been traded to OKC and released.

This really highlights the problem with blowing it up for draft picks. Most of the teams you can make deals with, when sending out star players with no trade clauses and/or strong agent influence, will be sending back fairly lousy picks. Other than the Washington and Houston picks, most of those 1st rounders are little better than 2nd rounders, and most of the 2nd rounders are little better than UFA's.

(Of course, the balance of power could change over the next 3-5 years and affect that greatly.)

Basically, OKC has created a massive upcoming logjam of fringe rotation talent and little in the way of starters.

Maybe? You simply never know with the draft. They might get a game changer.

Yeah, they could be looking to draft every overlooked player in hopes of a couple of them becoming the next Giannis. Throw all those picks at the wall and see what sticks...

There's a secondary problem there, though. Those diamonds in the rough usually need the right setting and circumstances to excel, and that's awfully tough to do when you're surrounding by five other rookies clamoring for attention.

I tend to agree

But a major part of OKC's strategy was to become a bad team and leverage that badness for high lottery picks. OKC was a 6th seed in 2019 (21st pick = Bazely + 2nd) and a 5th seed in 2020 (25th pick which became part of a bigger trade). Last year was the first draft when they had a high pick. They drafted Giddey at #6.

so almost all of OKC's payoff for dumping talent is ahead of them. They could have 3 first round picks in this year's draft and one could easily be top-4, with a mid and late first to supplement

the main tactic OKC hasn't used yet is consolidation. Say they have a 4th, a 18th, and a 30th pick this year. Can they consolidate into a top 2 pick? Will they roll the two lower picks into yet more future 1st's? Will they trade picks for talent?

I've been waiting to see them do that, but so far they seem to be most interested in acquiring more future assets. The one thing they've got in their favor is, having so many of the upcoming picks in their possession, teams might have to trade with them to get back in the draft. But, those aren't the teams with picks worth consolidating for, so that doesn't help. Plus, you know OKC will have to jettison a number of the selected players simply due to roster issues, so better to wait and cherry pick those than to go after their draft positions.

Damn that one two punch that the Sixers now have is going to really hard for anyone to beat considering the supporting cast they have around them.
Yeah and people were shitting on Philly saying they overpaid for Harden. I think Philly has a real shot at contending now.

Yes thats probably is most likely that the picks aren't stars if you look at any one pick. But the draft picks can be lottery tickets, especially when they aren't protected. Thats how the Cavs acquired Kyrie Irving (from Neil Olshey) and the Celtics got both Tatum and Brown all high in the lottery. Even if the picks aren't high lottery picks, they can be stars as the Spurs got Kawhi.

So the more first round picks the better, and the more unprotected the better. OKC has great picks, but the Pelicans and Rockets have some great ones too. But looking at any one pick or one draft as the key to bring in a star is not a good plan.

Overall I'd much rather have OKC roster and upcoming picks than our roster and upcoming picks. Now if you goal is only to make the playoffs in 2023 we are better setup for that, but having talent to build a contender in 5-10 years I'd much rather be in OKC position.

I'll wait until the playoffs. Harden has a tendency to underwhelm in the playoffs.

It seems like OKC has been rebuilding for awhile, but you are right; in 2020 they were a 5th seed with 9 more wins than the Blazers. So this will be only their second year in the lottery. Also, they owed their 2022 first round pick lottery protected, so sucking this year allowed them to keep their own pick, which now they only will give Atlanta a second rounder.

SGA is a potential star level player below Dame but somewhere above or below Ant. Plus a couple great role players, and all the picks they have could let them pivot to being a contender pretty quickly. Compared to franchises like the Kings, Spurs, Knicks, Magic that don't really have any star level players nor a chest of picks to acquire a star in the draft or trade. Those latter franchises will have a much harder time ever building a legit contender.

Now if I had to bet if OKC is a contender or not I'd take the not. But its probably a good bet to go against any one team 5 years from now when its a 30 team league. There are what 5 real contenders each year? I'd give OKC a much higher chance than the average team out of the 30 of becoming a contender.

Sigh……

Don't sigh - feel happy for him! He's finally doing what I thought he would do with Dame out.

Now: let's see if we can avoid just repeating our Olshey mistake by pairing Dame and Simons in the backcourt.
