If the Lakers pull this one out by less than 3, remember that 3 point heave to close out the first half...

...but they're not going to! Steve Blake for Lakers MVP!

Screw Zach Randolph - I want Monty back!

Remember that Phil Jackson has like 4352-0 series win record when his team wins the first game of the series. The fact that it looks like NO will take this one turns this into an interesting series.

Lol, LA will be fine. Chris Paul is shooting lights out right now and so are the rest of the Hornets. Gasol and Odom won't be this bad all series long. Basically, its the Hornets vs. Drew, Kobe, and Artest. Those are the only 3 mother fuckers to show up. We still take this in 5.

Your team looks old, bro.

Or they look like they just completely underestimated the Hornets and their ability to hit almost every shot they threw up. That is all. Now if we look like this next game, then yeah, we have a cause for concern.

This isn't an anomaly. The Lakers have been playing badly for awhile now and it appears there is no switch. Lakers may win the series but they won't beat us in the 2nd round.

At some point it gets to the point where older players who are tired can't dig down like they used to in previous seasons.

Lakers will probably win this series, but I'm not sure what to expect from them after that.

Nate in the playoffs on the road

08-09: 0-3
09-10: 1-2
10-11: 0-1

Monty:
10-11: 1-0

What's the record of Phil Jackson teams in playoff series where they lose the first game?

Just curious.

You're conveniently forgetting Nate's record with the Sonics.
Currently Monty '11 is Nate '10. Let's see him win another one before we anoint him.
(Also Monty has Chris Paul...)

Off hand, the Bulls beat the Jazz in the 98 Finals despite losing Game 1 and the Lakers beat the Sixers in the 2001 Finals despite losing Game 1. Also- the 2009 Lakers beat the Rockets in the ECSF despite losing Game 1.

You gotta get there, first.

Know they lost to the Pistons and Celtics after losing the 1st game.

Doesn't happen often, lol. I think the 2005-2006 Suns are in there as well.

Stop screwing up agenda with your rationality.

Spurs almost never win game 1 of the playoffs, even during their championship years and they do fine.

"Drew" would be Andrew "-15" Bynum, I take it. Maybe he shouldn't have shown up.

Three cheers for Monty! I'd like to think he learned all about L*ker hatred being a moral imperative here in Portland. Great win by a terrific coach and even a better guy.

According to basketball-reference.com, all of Phil's failed series included a loss in game 1:

89-90 vs. Pistons
94-95 vs. Magic
02-03 vs. Spurs
03-04 vs. Pistons
05-06 vs. Suns
06-07 vs. Suns
07-08 vs. Celtics

EDIT: Ooops -- bad search. Missed a bunch of series. Fixed post to reflect.

I'll say this for Monty: he was prepared to give minutes to Gray and M'Benga and it really paid off. I wish Nate was a bit more flexible. I'd rather see Patty play when Barea is playing than have the team obsess about posting him up. Phil Jackson always experiments with scrubs at some point and sometimes (like against Portland in the last game of the finals in '91) it pays off. Hell, give Armon Johnson a shot against Terry or Barea.

According to basketball-reference.com, he's 0-7 in series where he lost the first game:

89-90 vs. Pistons
94-95 vs. Magic
02-03 vs. Spurs
03-04 vs. Pistons
05-06 vs. Suns
06-07 vs. Suns
07-08 vs. Celtics

Wow. That's only with the Lakers, though. Didn't the Bulls lose the first game against the Lakers in Jordan's first championship year?

Edit: DUH. It's not only with the Lakers. But I was SURE the Bulls lost their first game to Magic's Lakers before winning the next 4.

Chris Paul proving you can be great on only one meniscus. Brandon Roy proving that one is the minimum you need, though.
