Neil should be judged compared to other GMs. Is he doing better than average for the pick range he is given? Id say yes. I have plenty of other problems with Neils roster construction and shitty contracts he gives out, the draft is the one area I'm most happy with him.

I swear posters here expect him to draft the perfect player at every pick.

Its like criticizing a professional poker player because he doesnt get a royal flush.

The best drafting GMs miss all the time. Its a very inexact process. Look at all the shitty picks in the top 10 of Zach class. There's only two that are certainly superior and a number are total busts. Look at half the league that passed on Giannis and Kawhi.

nobody expects him to be "perfect" in the draft

but considering that the Blazers are a small market and not a free agent destination, he does need to be good, especially in the 1st round

Olshey has been GM for 8 seasons and 8 drafts. Setting Dame aside because of situation, Olshey has had access to 7 first round picks, plus several 2nd round picks

in the playoffs against the Lakers, the only 1st round pick who scored any points was CJ. Trent and Simons were the only 2nd round picks that scored, and most of the points Simons scored were in garbage time

contrast that with Denver who drafted Jokic, Murray, Gary Harris, Michael Porter, Torey Craig, and Monte Morris all contributing to the rotation

If Olshey is going to bust out in the free agent market while refusing to risk anything substantial in trades, he needs to be close to elite at managing 1st round picks and he's just been mediocre

Well said. Denver’s management is amazing

Jokic is so freaking amazing on offense, but dude is the worst P&R defender in the league. Maybe worse than Whiteside

Well if he’s the worst then yes, he’s worse than Whiteside. No maybe about it.

Simons was a first round pick.

I'm not sure why you would set aside Neils best draft pick in Dame but harp on his worsts picks?

Murray #7 Porter #14 Harris #19 were all good picks. Craig wasn't drafted. Jokic and Morris were 2nd round picks. Yes the Nuggets have done awesome. They also had playoff droughts to acquire talent Neil hasn't had.

For every Nuggets success there are many more franchises that have done shit drafting and many often in the lottery; Kings, Wizards, Suns, Magic, TWolves, Pistons, Cavs, Bulls, Hornets, Knicks, etc.

I remember a few years ago, when the Warriors traded for the draft rights to Jordan Bell, there were people who were apoplectic that Olshey didn't make that trade (couldn't be that they were biased Duck fans or something).

"The rich getting richer!" was their reaction to the Warriors getting Bell. The Warriors always draft great!

Oddly enough, Jordan Bell sucks as an NBA player. But these posters would have you know that they are better judges of talent than the soap opera guy is! This is proof the team doesn't care about winning, because they didn't trade for him!!?!11!

Think of it this way. The Warriors paid 3.5 million for the right to Bell, and then promptly waived him before they came close to paying him 3.5 million.

Maybe fans don't know better.

I said that Dylan Brooks was the steal of that group, was a lottery talent, and was played at the wrong position (forward) in college... There's guesswork to every projection, but what amazes me is how often the experts miss stuff that's hiding in broad daylight.

You conveniently left out the injured Collins and Little who missed the series, but counted Porter who missed all of last year and has injury red flags that suggest he'll miss much more time in the future. (Olshey would have been grilled for taking that risk.) Unless you're not even counting Zach because he technically wasn't our pick, in which case you have to look at how many 1st round picks we've even had since Lillard. Hint: CJ and Hollis-Jefferson are the only two aside from the Swanigan fiasco. RHJ netted us Plumlee who netted us Nurkic, so it quickly gets complicated which scoring to include if you're being selective like that.

I'm not sure why you would set aside Neils best draft pick in Dame but harp on his worsts picks?

because Chad Buchannen was the interim GM that landed that 6th pick in trade and the Portland scouting staff had long identified Dame as a top target months before Olshey was even hired. The Blazers had been in a desperate scramble to land a PGOTF for years, and the previous scouting staff thought that PG was Lillard

both Chris Haynes and Jason Quick reported that Dame was very likely going to be the 6th pick and Olshey just rubber stamped it at the draft

I was talking about this year's playoffs. You know, the topic of this thread. Zach didn't play, Little didn't play, Porter is

Since I was talking about Jordan Bell, and how fans often over-react to things and think they know a lot more than they really do, I'm not sure what Collins and Little have to do with anything. Also, when did I bring up Porter?

Maybe my point was that fans miss out far more than GM's do, and conveniently forget stuff.

that part of his post was responding to me

I was quoting wizenheimer there...

What the hell else could I have been referring to? Of course you were talking about this year's playoffs. Little wasn't here for last year's playoffs... You left them out because they didn't fit your narrative of how bad Olshey has picked in the 1st round based on how those picks fared scoring-wise in this year's playoffs.

LOL....as if Zach at 10 and Little at 24 reverses the narrative

10 Zach Collins
13 Donovan Mitchell
14
Bam Adebayo
19 John Collins
22 Jarrett Allen
23
OG Anunoby
26
Caleb Swanigan
27
Kyle Kuzma
29
Derrick White
30
Josh Hart
45
Dillon Brooks

yeah, that help's the "Olshey is a good drafter argument" a lot

Weird...when I replied it totally only showed mine and now it shows both.

Like, literally I must be blind.

Bam named 2nd team all defense. My goodness you even get elite defense out of this guy

Tell me again how the hell did Olshey grade Zach Collins over Bam?

Funny thing is folks praise Zach for his defense lol WE COULD HAVE GOT ELITE DEFENSE FROM BAM!

Wesley Matthews still got it on defense.

Looking at that Bucks team, their rotation 1 through 9......I think only one (2 if you count Ariza) player from the Blazers could replicate similar results on defense if we swapped them and that's Gary Trent.

They may have too many defense only players though and not enough offensive creation.

Until he gets kicked in the Tunchi....

The 4th quarter always takes twice as long as other quarters. Please make some rule changes to fix this shit.

Any interest in Billy Donovan? He's available.
