...errrr wait, wrong thread :dunno: am I doing this right?!

Mike Brown or even Steve Clifford would be solid backup for a rookie coach first year...have that vet on the bench Lloyd Pierce maybe?

Here's a novel idea....hire Melo to be a coach working with rookies on offense....keeps him on the team and let's him mentor and he and Chauncey were teammates

"Forget those other guys on your team, you can't be guarded, you can take 'em!"
"Thanks, coach. What's the plan on defense?"
"Defense?"

nah...he's an offense, footwork coach....nobody gets their shot off quicker than Melo with a hand in his face....never said make him a defensive coordinator....Mark Price coaches shooting...not defense....we went 11 minutes in a must win game without making a shot...I think he can help and do as much as Janero Pargo could from the sidelines...he's a vocal leader in the locker room and if he's in a suit and tie with a clipboard, he's not taking minutes from Nas...Melo was in the ear of Gary Trent, Nas and Elleby all season when he wasn't on the court....he's a great guy to share his knowledge of the game with your younger players..he played with Chauncey in Denver...they go way back. If not, the Lakers will pick him up....either way I've learned to respect Melo way more than I ever thought I would when he first landed here.

How long does it usually take for a staff to be put together

I'm guessing Billups has at least a good start on ideas for who he would like as assistants.
Shouldn't take too long.

So Billups pretty much said he’s gonna hire at least one defensive minded guy with experience. Fizdale would qualify. Idk what Hollins’ background is. Lloyd Pierce would qualify as well.

Hollins helped craft the Lakers defense recently and has been lauded for the defense those grit and grind teams in Memphis played. Fizdale ran that similar roster into the ground and flamed out.

Depends on the head coach. Ideally, pretty quickly for the most part, maybe a straggler hire in 2-3 weeks to finish things off.

I know a head coach who actually keeps a binder of candidates for each role so he already knows who he wants to talk to if one of his assistants moves on.

With Billups, it probably gets pushed back a bit until his responsibilities with the Clippers end, but I think we'll get our first few hires within 4-5 days of that. He's probably talked to people through the years "Hey, if I get a head coaching job, would you come with me?" ... that type of thing.

Not ours, but interesting name.

People have a short memory on how fucking terrible Damon was in Portland. I've seen a few "it could have been us"!

Yeah, like we need a guy who complained about playing time during the Western Conference Finals publicly to Jason Quick to be our coach. We need a guy who probably had one of the worst shot selections in Portland to tell Dame how to shoot.

I think Mike Brown is known to have a solid defensive IQ....I kind of want to see Big Ben on the bench...or Laimbeer

If you want to guess who Billups might hire, first place I'd look is lower on the Clippers staff, guys he might think are ready for a bigger role. Look for guys he's played with who are coaches now or who coached him or he's had close connection with. Look for guys with the same agent. I think you'll see a lot of if not 99% of the hires come from that pool.

"Kawhi, you could become the first ever player/assistant coach, just join the Blazers! No, you wouldn't have to talk."

He’s the reason why I’m a blazers fan. When I saw the tweet I’m not gonna lie I got a little hopeful. At the same time, I know nothing of his coaching ability
