Exclusive Ayton is agreeing to buyout

The front office is rockin' and rollin' so far...I like it. I don't think they picked up the option on Jabari Walker and read he and Banton will probably move on before next season.

So why do this now? So that DA can get a deal? Is that the only way he would agree?

Free agency hasn’t started yet. I’m just curious why they didn’t wait to do this. Something else coming?

I think they need to open up roster spots for a bigger deal...probably including Grant..

The Wolves are interested in him and just let our former Summer league star Garza go along with another young player.

They’re doubling down that Yang will contribute. Whatever the case, we’re making some really off the wall moves so far. Management will look like geniuses or the opposite. I feel like there’s no middle ground when we look back on this summer.

correct. Joe is not a great deal maker and persuader sales type, a disadvantage for us, and even his most ardent defenders would probably agree. Our path to contention with him is that Schmitz and the assistants end up being amazing talent evaluators and we draft really well and trade for underrated players other teams don’t think as highly of.

I was fine with letting him walk next summer… but I thought maybe he had some value as an expiring. I guess not.
I think the value is if the Blazers took on a worse contract. With Jrue/Grant and young player extensions maybe the Blazers realized that wasnt going to happen.

Also need to see the amount of the buyout. If Ayton gave up 10-20 million it makes way more sense from the Blazers side.

the only thing "wrong" is your assertion that LA can pay him 14 mil without having any avenues to do so.

they are a tax team. max they can offer is 5.7.
DFS opted out, so if Lakers do not re-sign him they have the full MLE to work with

So we are keeping Rob now, right?
I'd assume yes - might as well roll the dice he can get healthy either for higher trade value or for us to use ourselves. Plus he can play PF.

Sure we would consider giving him up for value but seems unlikely a trade partner gives up much of anything.

Assume Ayton was willing to give back more now since he has more teams with cap space to explore signing with.

Wait a week, or heck even 24 hours and one of his potential suitors could have gone from 10-15 million cap space to only vet minimums.

Call me nostalgic but I'd love for Nic Batum to play his last year in the league in Portland...he's still got a great game. He said this is it...he could mentor our Euro players on his way out. I think Rupert is from his hometown and close to him.

actually a great idea, he wouldn’t cost that much either

think he said he wanted to retire last year if not in LA.

I don’t remember what thread I said this in but I’ll reiterate.
The Jrue trade completely killed a potential Ayton trade.
It made ZERO sense financially

he is going to go for over the MLE. Salary starting at 20 mil per year is probably more likely

I think Brooklyn is only team that has that cap space? Maybe he does that but if they sign someone else he might have to take the full MLE. Maybe he prefers 1yr deal plus player option in that case.
