I remember being so jealous of Phoenix for being about to land Ayton. I thought he was going to be like a healthy Greg Oden.

Ayton is a core piece for our young team..I love the guy as our center. Best starting center since Oden.

He's perhaps got quicker feet than Oden, good feet for a big man, but 25% of the heart of Oden.

What do you love about him? His sub-50% shooting as a center? Far-below league-average TS%? The fact that barely 1/4 of his shots are at the rim? His shot-blocking percentage that's lower than CJ's? Other than his rebounding--which is basically average for starting centers--what do you love about him?

He's a nice guy?

How often does Ayton make this kind of effort to score at the hoop when he gets the ball at this spot on the edge of the key? I'd say ten percent? less than 10 percent of his touches?

I have less than 10 percent expectation of a dunk from Ayton in this situation.

Interesting quote by Barrett " Oden and Bynum will see a lot of each other in the future."

If 2024 Ayton were also in that clip, he'd have been the 3rd best center on the court.

Memories of what Could have been!

I remember being so envious of Phoenix for being about to draft Doncic, and then watching incredulously as three teams (Atlanta included) completely shit the bed.
Agreed.

I couldn't see why Ayton was in the conversation for #1 pick. I watch him live when he disappeared in the NCAA Tournament vs #15 seed Buffalo.

Doncic was the easy/obvious pick during that draft.

Ayton was called a generational talent and guess who else was? Zion!
This is why the draft is a crap shoot.
Wemby is good. Very good to say the least but we just watched what happens when he tweaks an ankle. He has been reduced to human.

His speed. His midrange shot. His rebounding and his unselfish play. he gets to the line. given he’s rarely played with the same starting lineup. I can wait for his chemistry to gel

WUT?

he doesn't get to the line at all. He might be the worst at getting to the line among all NBA C's.

last season, Ayton ranked 218th out of 240 qualified NBA players in FT rate. Horford was the only C with a worse rate

He gets plenty of and one free throws. I’m not interested in his past stats. I like what I see from him this season and he’s not had much roster stability in Portland so far. I think he’s a keeper Banton is listed as our best guy getting to the line but he doesn’t play Ayton minutes…last season shows Badji as that guy. We’ll see how Ayton does at the end of the season but he’s looking way better to me starting this season

He's had precisely 2 and-one free throws this season (1-for-2 on those). I think he had fewer than 10 last year.

I think you have a different definition of "plenty" than I do.

he's played 7 games so far and in 4 of those games, he didn't get to the line once. Last season, out of 55 games, he had 27 games when he didn't get to the line

getting to the line is one of the things he's really bad at. His career FT rate is .193 and it's much worse than that in Portland

career FT rate:

Gobert .709
Plumlee .558
Embiid .553
Nick Richards .533
Powell .512
Jarrett Allen .451
Adamns .441
Adebayo .430
AD .410
Zubac .392
Claxton .384
Nurkic .383
Sengun .378
Sabonis .377
Duren .362
Carer Jr .340
Looney .338
Capela .337
Jaren Jackson .334
Valunciunas .329
Kat .324
Jokic .317
Myle Turner .310
Wemby .307
Poeltl .305
Holmgren .299

Ayton .193

Is a lot of Ayton's problems setting screens because the ball handler doesn't dribble past close enough to the screen? This is just a theory so far but I have noticed on other teams they skim by so close that they lose the guy who is blocked. I think he wants to set good screens so is the problem coaching?

sure....some of it can be on the ball-handler. But that's going to be true for every screen-setter. Ball-handlers don't magically get dumb around Ayton and then get smart around Jokic

Ayton isn't terrible at setting screens, but he's not great at either. Probably below average. This was a big complaint Phoenix fans had about Ayton by the way

I was talking about the Portland ball handler..... I'm saying maybe Jokic is working with smarter or better coached ball handlers.

sure....maybe....probably?

I'm just worn out on considering excuses for the flaws of Portland's big-3
