A rumor I saw on another message board.

Would you do it?

Mailbag: Should the Trail Blazers trade Nicolas Batum?

If some of those sound like raw deals, that’s because, in a present day vacuum, they are. Batum’s stock is far from soaring right now, and rebuilding requires a bit of gambling, but that’s how it goes. If President of Basketball Operations Neil Olshey wants to sniff out a trade that balances more immediately, he can always aim for established players that are known quantities, sacrificing developmental possibility for steady value. This is where your suggestion of Trevor Ariza fits nicely.

Ariza is one of a few solid vets that are slated to occupy that $5M-$10M range for years to come. Others include Taj Gibson of the Chicago Bulls, Kevin Martin of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Tony Allen of the Memphis Grizzlies. All of them will be reasonable values after the cap increase, but all are at or beyond their peak right now. Great pickups for a couple deep playoff runs, but not so much for a rebuild. Perhaps worth an inquiry regardless.

That'd be as if I went to RealGM and said I read a rumor of us signing Thibs, and I posted a link to people here saying we should sign Thibs.

I am just asking if you'd do the deal.

I am not saying it's some hot rumor with good sources.

I'm not trading an starter for a bench player. That's just stupid...

No. I like Taj, but wouldn't move Nic for him, it makes no sense if we keep Aldridge, and less sense if he leaves.
And it's not a rumor. It's a suggestion. And a half assed one at that that the writer wasn't even really in support of.

Anyone interested in the Suns' #13 pick? Their GM says it's available. Batum for #13 is too much. Adding in PJ Tucker would probably be too much for Phoenix. Batum/23 for Tucker/13, perhaps?

I not a draft pro (there really isn't such a thing anyways) but I would say anyone from 10-11 to 30 are fairly close in value this year. If the pick was #8 then ya. Not #13 imo.

I'd say no to Batum for Gibson. I think there are better deals if Batum is on the block

I would think the Blazers could get more than just Taj. Although, I'm a huge fan of Mr. Gibson

It could easily be a sign and trade, Batum is the best player in the deal but Dunleavy is a better 3 point shooter and Gibson would be a major defensive upgrade.

FWIW

Batum shot .400 and .324 from 3pt with a PER of 13.1 and is being paid $12M.

Gibson shot .502, had a 16.1 PER, and is being paid $8M.

The $4M difference and the Bulls being already over the LT (maybe without Dunleavy they're not), I don't see the Bulls doing it anyway.

Only if we're trading (or not re-signing) LMA. Otherwise it doesn't make any sense to torpedo the SF position to bolster an already deep PF position.

Trade Batum for Taj, then do that Ariza centered deal for LMA, then we'll be stuck in the not good enough to do anything in the playoffs, but not bad enough to get a top back no mans land nobody wants to be in like the Suns.
