That's a silly comparison. Magic was a PF with otherworldly passing and dribbling skills.
Magic was not a PF, he was a PG prospect and nothing else. Nobody was looking at drafting their future PF. So let me correct you, "Magic was a PG with otherworldly passing and dribbling skills." Now you're correct and yes I'd say that describes both Magic and Rubio as prospects perfectly.
Could Rubio start at center and score 40 points in his rookie year? I think not.
Was he drafted to? No, he was drafted to be a PG, which is where he played his entire career. Magic played center in one game because of a plethora of injuries. So if the same thing happened to Portland I suppose he could, but that's not what you judge them by as a prospect.
But he's more Jason Kidd than Magic Johnson.
Go with Jason Kidd. (Who went #2, ahead of Grant Hill, remember, and also couldn't shoot.) It's safer (and less silly) than Magic.
He's nothing like Jason Kidd. Jason Kidd was a defensive player with great court vision. He was never good on offense and never really showed any potential in that area either. Rubio has been very good offensively and projects to improve in that area tremendously. But at 18 Rubio is already better offensively than Kidd was in his prime. Rubio also has length, Kidd is kind of stumpy.
