Re: Ben Golliver says on Talkin Ball says the Blazers maybe trying to trade JJ HIckso

The "mediocre middle" also known as "NBA purgatory" ... I'd say that sucks hardcore.

Purgatory? I agree being a low-seeded playoff team can be tough to get beyond. But you have to start somewhere. But we have a young team with solid young pieces, and a bunch of scraps. It's hard for me to think we don't have the potential for our young core to improve and our scraps to be strengthened.

Do we need more contributing pieces? Yes. But is acquiring them, and/or the scraps we do have improving, beyond the realm of possibilities? No.

If an 8th seed is your ceiling then you've fucked up at building your team. The roster that I responded to above would be just that kind of team. In all honesty, this team probably needs another difference maker out of the lottery, unless they can buck the odds and lure such a player through free agency or find somebody in a trade.

Re: Ben Golliver says on Talkin Ball says the Blazers maybe trying to trade JJ HIckso

Hickson seems like a good fit in Denver with George Karl.

Re: Ben Golliver says on Talkin Ball says the Blazers maybe trying to trade JJ HIckso

I could see Denver or Philadelphia as possible trading partners. Hickson for Koufos?

I don't see him wanting to go to Denver in a contract year, and see his playing time cut, among their bigs.

Re: Ben Golliver says on Talkin Ball says the Blazers maybe trying to trade JJ HIckso

Hickson is the king of popcorn stats ... and plays almost no defense. He hasn't taught Aldridge a fucking thing.

I disagree, I have seen Hickson have a profound affect on Aldridge's energy level, hustle, and rebounding. It seems they have a nice friendly competition going on and it is improving both of their stats lately (outside some of the last few games where LMA couldn't hit the broad-side of the bar).

I wouldn't say "sucks"....I'd say we wouldn't be in the WCF anytime soon. But we wouldn't be a lotto team

By sucks I mean never good or bad enough to matter. Worst thing that can happen

Re: Ben Golliver says on Talkin Ball says the Blazers maybe trying to trade JJ HIckso

Hickson's contract significantly diminishes his value. Not sure what they could realistically get for him.

Re: Ben Golliver says on Talkin Ball says the Blazers maybe trying to trade JJ HIckso

And if we do that, he's our "big free agent signing" and we're basically done improving the team in a significant way for a long time? Trade him.

Remember though Hickson still has to agree to a deal. He is playing a fairly significant role on our team and doing well (per, advanced stats, etc) that he probably sees his best chance to impress other teams for a big contract being here rather then on another team where he may be coming off the bench the rest of the season.

If the Blazers traded Hickson for Koufos I doubt Hickson playing time would be cut. He only plays around 25 to 29 minutes a game for us.

denver already has a better version of hickson who is locked into a rookie contract and is a fan favorite, theyd rather have an al harrington type

You just don't want to see Hickson leave. Ok what about Hickson and Smith to Philadelphia for Spencer Hawes?

Better to give up our pick this year and build momentum than to have a 13-18 pick this year. This draft is weak beyond the first few picks.

This idea that Hickson taught LaMarcus how to play in the paint or LaMarcus only does so because of Hickson is a real head scratcher. Where was Hickson when LaMonster was working like mad tearing up the league and earning an all star nod? Hint: he wasn't on the blazers. I f anything Hickson displaces LaMarcus from that area of the court. I agree Hickson is putting up "popcorn stats" in this a contract year. I'd love to have Hickson come off our bench behind a real center, for the right price. That doesn't seem likely ATM.

Hmmm well I remember the blazers before 1998-99, had the same scenario. Then they got a few free agents and traded for quality. They made it to the wcf two years in a row after.

Paul Allen has come out ans said he will never approach 100 million in salaries again, so next plan?

Re: Ben Golliver says on Talkin Ball says the Blazers maybe trying to trade JJ HIckso

We're doing nothing this year. Everyone that's not part of the core (Lillard, Batum and Aldridge) or young and cheap with upside (Leonard and perhaps Barton) should be actively shopped. And NO ONE should be off limits. If the deal is right, the deal is right.

one disagreement - Wes Matthews, with his play this yr and his contract and what he means to the team I add him to the core unless a no brainer offer occurs.

But in all fairness Matthews is the most valuable tradeable contract. I want him part of the core too; but I bet teams will want him if we make a big time move.

point was Maxie said "actively shopped", if you trade him you just create another huge hole, now for the "right deal" sure you pull the trigger, but "actively shopped"? I don't think so IMO

A no brainer like a SG who can do more than spot up?

Matthews is the absolute perfect 6th man

with a scoring SG like Lillard Wes is a great complement, there are a lot of teams who would like to have him as a starter for his shooting, defense, and pure desire. Frankly I'd rather get a backup PG/SG like Jarret Jack and keep Wes. Unless you can come up with a better all around SG than Wes who is realistically "gettable"

Well said, rppd.

Me too! I'm a huge fan of Wes. And I wasn't saying we should shop him. Just saying he's the most valuable contract we have right now.

I want a center.

we all do, hoping Meyers eventually develops, and there is more of a shortage them (C's) then anything so it won't be easy. And the ones who you might get are big risks like javale McGee, Lopez in New Orleans is playing very well this yr -I wonder if they would part with him and what the cost would be.

Re: Ben Golliver says on Talkin Ball says the Blazers maybe trying to trade JJ HIckso

The SG position has actually become one of the hardest positions (with Center) to fill in the NBA lately. If you deal Wes you probably try to get a SF (and/or Center) and then move Batum to SG because there are many more legit SF's that can play right now vs SGs.

good point, though it seems several teams lack solid SF's as well, but it does offer flexibility of one could be had in a good deal

Moving batum to sg is not a good choice IMO. He is playmaking and if both guards are playmakers; it could ruin the flow.

Re: Ben Golliver says on Talkin Ball says the Blazers maybe trying to trade JJ HIckso

SG's top 10 by VA:
Kobe
Harden
Wade
Ginobili
Mayo
Louis Williams
J.R. Smith
Kevin Martin
Dudley
Jamal Crawford

Big drop-off in SG after the top 3 or 4

SF's by VA:
Durant
James
Carmelo
Pierce
Batum
Thaddeus Young
Josh Smith
Paul George
Kirilenko
Gallinari

SF doesn't have as big or quick of a drop-off and the list after the top 10 is filled with some good young talent like Kid-Gilchrist, and Parsons (Deng just missed the top 10).

If someone is asking VA is another term like PER that I believe Hollinger made up (or maybe he didn't make that one up but he uses it). I like it better than PER at times. It stands for Value Added and the formula is long so just look it up if you are interested.

If you don't want to move Batum to SG then don't trade Matthews imo. Because SG's are that hard to find. Combo-guards to come off the bench on the other hand aren't too hard to find. Someone like Jack or Fredette.

there is nothing of value except wes of what you specified
