Based on my conservation today, Ben Simmons will be traded to the Portland Trailblazers in December for Norm Powell and RoCo.
Due to Norm's contract - he can't be traded until Jan 15th at the earliest.
http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q101
In addition, teams cannot trade players under the following circumstances:

  • For two months after receiving the player in trade, if the trade aggregates the player's salary with the salaries of other players. However, the team is free to trade the player immediately, either by himself or without aggregating his salary with other salaries. This restriction applies only to players who were acquired using an exception (and not cap room). (Also see question number 90.)
  • When the trade deadline has passed. Teams are free to make trades again once their season has ended4, but cannot trade players whose contracts are ending or could end due to an option or ETO.
  • For three months or until December 15 of that season (whichever is later) after signing a contract as a free agent or matching an offer sheet to a restricted free agent. This obviously does not apply to the trade completing a sign-and-trade transaction (see question number 92).
  • For three months or until December 15 of that season (whichever is later) after converting a Two-Way contract to a standard contract (see question number 83), with the three months beginning on the date the contract is converted.
  • For three months or until January 15 of that season (whichever is later) after re-signing a free agent with Larry Bird or Early Bird rights, if the team is over the cap, the player's new salary is above the minimum, and he receives a raise greater than 20%.
  • For 30 days after signing as a draft pick. This applies even for later-signed first round picks, who are signed using cap room at least three seasons after they are drafted (see question number 49).
I don't think this has much of a chance of happening.

The rule appears to be that if we signed him to a contract using Bird rights that resulted in us going over the cap, AND his contract is > 120% his previous, then we can't trade him til Jan 15.

My only possible counter... weren't we over the cap already before signing him, or am I messing up the order here? If that is the case, I THINK (still unclear) he can be traded 3 months from the day he signed (Aug 9).

But ya, Morey ain't taking that for Ben.

It's based on AFTER the signing is completed. Portland would be over the cap at that point. Jan 15 would be the day.

I wouldn't mind this trade though:

At this point, Morey-on is going to be getting pennies on the dollar. He's running out of time. Plus the fans reaction, and local media ain't helping matters. This is a dumpster fire, and wasting time getting a deal done is pouring gasoline on it.

RoCo is twice the player Twillbill is. CJ for Simmons & maybe a pick max.
Matisse and Ben have a legitimate chance at being the absolute two best defenders in the league. Are you kidding me?

I'm not saying Simmons isn't worth trading for, but i don't see what you do in Thybulle. Just don't.

last IG update of the day and I can stop being a teenage social media sleuth.

Dame for some reason stopped following Ben's lady friend. Found it odd that he was following her (now SHE is a socialite/model/TV personality) and not Ben earlier, but it now appears to be flipped.

Dame-CJ-Simmons-Nance-Nurk

Holy hell. That's possibly the best starting five in the league this side of Brooklyn. I need to check the rules on when we can deal Powell. Some conflicting info on that since he was signed using Bird rights.

what is a better lineup? Dame-CJ-Simmons-Nance-Nurk? or, Dame-Powell-RoCo-Simmons-Nurkic? or even Dame-Powell-RoCo-Nance-Simmons?

I think the first one is 3rd best, by a long shot

Which one is closest to Lillard, Mathews, Batum, Aldridge, Lopez of yore.

I think I understand what you're trying to say.... if so, I agree.

The Dame-CJ-Simmons lineup would be the worst of the 3 options. I like the Dame-Powell-RoCo-Simmons lineups better.

And this.... if Neil does this, I would build a statue for him.

Aha! That's what I posted a week ago when it seemed Lillard was showing interest in Simmons and somebody asked if Lillard realized his best friend CJ would have to go out in the trade.

We're the betting favorite to get Simmons and I don't think Morey can afford to let him do damage until December. I think they take CJ for Simmons or CJ and RoCo for Simmons and Thybulle but I think a deal for Simmons gets done in the next three weeks. The second that dude doesn't show up for camp, they might be looking at CJ for Simmons and a first rounder, his value will tank so badly.

Very good breakdown of what he 'can be' and how to improve his type of usage on the court.

Yup, this is exactly the place I see him meshing so well with Dame, as the screener/roll man with Dame initiating the action - and as a finisher / distributer once the defense collapses.

If you consider's Nurk's sub-par post play and how good he is helping the offense from the perimeter and cutting - and it actually helps Simmons by clearing the post when he is used as the roll man.

No way Morey and Rivers sends him to Portland unless they get what they want, and it wont just be CJ. I still see him in either Minnie or Sac Town.

don't overthink it. If we can land simmons without giving up Dame/CJ/Nurk, you do that every day of the week.

that said, it is quite the pipedream.

Think I may prefer to trade Nurk over Roco. Although Philly having Embiid means a 3rd team would need to get Nurk to send something back to Philly.

CJ
Powell Roco
Powell Nurk

I'd probably rank them in that order.

Who is Minnie or Sac giving up that is clearly better than CJ?
Maybe not one particular piece, but the thought for Philly of hoping to flip assets at a later date for someone like Beal, Lavine, etc.?

Nurk is easily more impactful on the basketball court than Roco. This is an easy one and I think for as skilled as he is, I would allow him to try and make it work with Ben before shipping him out.

What if Neil is lowballing in his mind and offering Powell/RoCo/Pick for Simmons to try and keep CJ. I doubt Philly has interest or will get to the point that that offer ever interests them but…

Dame/Simons
Cj/McLemore
Simmons/Nas
Nance/GB3
Nurk/Zeller

When can Norm be traded? Thoughts? I don’t like it.

yeah, I agree with that

there has to be some valid concern about the mesh between Simmons and Nurkic, especially if there was a bad mesh between Simmons and Embiid

But Nurkic has a big impact on defense....of course, RoCo does too. But if the Blazers do trade CJ for Simmons, they have a lot of options in starting units and rotations; and some of those options can include Nurkic. If somehow the Blazers can build a good mesh, or even just a decent mesh, with Nurk and Ben they will be a formidable team with lots of versatility

Great....a picture of a Dame/CJ lovefest with Jokic over their shoulders just before finishing punking them without his starting backcourt.

Nice marketing.... :banghead2:
They could at least shop out that ugly mug of his.
