@wizenheimer what part of him trying harder on defense but not actually being measurabley better do you not understand?

I don't understand how you can judge he's trying harder. By his facial expression? the determination in his eyes? clenched jaw? If he's still beat off the dribble and ineffective stopping penetration; still ends up chasing his man too often; still too slow on rotations; still buried behind screens; still not showing any improvement in lateral reactions. If he's still failing defensivly the same as he's been failing for 4 seasons, where does the trying harder show up?

and in this case, how can you gauge that he tried harder this season than Sharpe?

first off...no, I disagree, "pretty much everyone" has not acknowledged it. I think a lot of people have judged Ant's defense this season as being as poor as it's been in previous seasons. That's a big reason why Chauncey benching Sharpe for bad defense brought so much criticism

* Simons began starting in 2021-22. That season he was dead last on the team in defensive rating at 4.1 points worse than the team's defensive rating. He was also last among Blazer rotation players in DBPM

* in 2022-23, Simons was dead last in def rating among rotation players with a mark 4.2 points worse than the team. And he was last among rotation players in DBPM

* in 2023-24, Simons was dead last among rotation players with a def rating 3.5 points worse than the team. And also dead last in DBPM

* this season, Simons was again dead last among rotation players in def rating with a mark 4.3 worse than the team. In other words, relative to the team's def rating, this season was the worst defensive performance of his starting career. And again, his DBPM was worst on the team

now granted, defensive metrics can be noisy. They can skew one way or the other depending on rotations. That's not so much the case with starters though. But when you have a 4 season, 235 game sample consistently showing the same thing, over and over, it's pretty persuasive.

that's why I asked how anybody could tell that Simons was trying harder on defense. Certainly can't tell by results.

His issues are his physical limitations on defense. I said he was trying harder, not that he was adequate on defense. Eyeball test showed he was trying to compete more on defense. Results weren't much different and I wouldn't have expected them to be. But he was still trying harder.

The other part to the OG question was that Sharpe seemed to try harder and get better on defense in the second half of the season.

Stop worrying about Ant's defense, he's not gunna be a Blazer past his current contract, maybe even earlier. Also, Camara Avdija and Clingan are good enough defenders that once we trade for Evan Mobley we'd be respectable

Scoot / Banton
Sharpe / Thybulle
Avdija / Camara
Mobley / Murray
Ayton / Clingan

How many assistant coaches do we have?! I remember Adelman had (2) in the glory days.

I wonder how Nate Bjorkgren is working out as an assistant coach. He seems like he would be the most important assistant.

It honestly feels like he's the head coach, or at least the one making in game adjustments. He's pretty next to/in Chauncey's ear during EVERY game.

He definitely looked like he was in Chauncey's ear quite a bit.
He does have some head coach experience. I am sure he wants another shot.

They must have some replacements lined up...a lot of coaching staffs are going to break up this off season.

The Portland Trail Blazers won’t renew the contracts of assistant coaches Roy Rogers, Chris Fleming and Ryan Gomes, NBA sources has told The Oregonian/OregonLive. Rogers arrived in Portland before the 2020-21 season and oversaw the team’s defense, which showed improvement last season. Fleming arrived last season and worked extensively with point guard Scoot Henderson and also helped coordinate the offense. Gomes worked as a player development coach.

This is kind of odd. Didn't they jettison 3 assistants last year also?

He is definitely in his ear. But is Billups really listening?

More often than not assistant coaches are looking to move up the ranks at some point and want a new landscape while others just might want to be somewhere else closer to family, etc. Chauncey's bro is back coaching in Colorado I think.

I would expect to see upgrades.
Last year when they made hires nobody knew if Chauncey would be back after this year. Now he’s extended and it’ll be a more attractive destination than it was last year.
Surprised by Roger’s though. Apparently he’s the defense guy and our defense obviously improved this year

Everyone here said that was the Conductor’s doing. If so, why do we need Rogers?

….because he was our defensive assistant. How else would I judge him?
He’s the coach that focuses on defense
The defense improves dramatically

I know this might come as a shock to you but 99% of what everyone says on here is speculation or ends up being wrong.

Just trade from CJ!

Hell yeah. Some of you nutjobs can pipe down now for a couple years and let Chauncey do his thing

Most of us can see the Forest, y'all can get past the trees.

They let the basic math tutors go to bring in the algebra tutors for the next phase.
